A group of burglars went from storefront
to storefront along West 95th in Beverly,
smashing windows and stealing cash.
Tia Ewing has the latest on the investigation
as police question a person of interest.
Look, this is all we have.
So to know that this is all you have
and someone doesn't care and just could take it from you
or try to take it from you is just devastating.
For some, it's their life savings.
For others, 15 years of sacrifice.
And for one business owner, a dream shattered.
Just six months after it began.
3:43 Thursday morning watches three men jump out of a red vehicle.
Burglary tools in hand.
They split up.
Within seconds, a masked burglar takes off
with an entire cash register.
About $100 stolen, but $1,500 in damage.
This is the 2100 block of West 95th Street in Beverly.
By 3:48 in the morning, four businesses have been hit.
At 4:08, two more.
Six businesses in less than half an hour.
Police say cash was stolen from four.
Two others were left damaged, but nothing taken.
It's frustrating because in a business like this,
we're not always busy every single day.
So now I'm hoping and praying that people are going to come in.
We don't always get 30 customers, 40 customers in the span of a week.
For two years, Taysia Patterson has poured
her heart into Jade Beauty Supply.
Now a $100 theft has left her with a $1,500 repair bill.
A few doors down, Mina Houston has spent
15 years building Desdemie House of Styles.
I just had some estimates. We had about four
or five estimates because this window was so expensive.
It's so expensive.
And how big it is.
Yeah, and it's really big.
Now she's facing an estimated $7,000 in damage.
It's still fresh. You know, I'm still looking at this. So it's a lot.
13 years of hard work at Essential Creations.
Owner Santricia Strickland says thieves took cash,
and she's still adding up the loss.
It was some cash, and then, you know,
it just looked like some things missing off my shelf over here.
So we're still trying to evaluate some things.
But the frustration doesn't end with the break-ins.
Patterson says business owners
were cleaning up shattered glass when police arrived.
So no fingerprint was done. When we got here,
all the business owners got here.
We, you know, initially we were sweeping up glass,
trying to, you know, see what's what.
So I was told once the detective got here
that they won't fingerprint because we swept up the
glass. We should have left everything as it was until they got here.
And while some are fighting
to stay open, one business owner is walking away.
Chicago rapper Queen Key opened her Colors Boutique
just six months ago. What began as a celebration
of a new chapter has become a painful goodbye
to her brick and mortar dream.
With thousands in damage, she says she's moving her business online.
It kind of made me kind of just lose hope in the city, for real.
Six businesses targeted, years of sacrifice undone in minutes.
