A Melody So Beautiful It Feels Like Heaven… | Bach: Arioso

Bach wrote this melody in 1729 as the opening Sinfonia of his cantata “Ich steh mit einem Fuß im Grabe” (“I stand with one foot in the grave”), music for a soul at peace and ready for heaven. He loved it enough to reuse it years later as the slow movement (Largo) of his Harpsichord Concerto in F minor, BWV 1056. Today it’s known simply as the Arioso, and it has become one of the most beloved melodies in the cello repertoire.
