Martha Washington:
Young Martha Washington at Mount Vernon (c. 1759, age 28)
She was the first US first lady.
Martha was with George Washington for most of the Revolutionary War.

Abigail Adams:
Abigail was the first woman whose husband and son were both US Presidents.
We will wait more than 100 years for Barbara Bush to repeat the feat.

Martha Jefferson:
Martha Jefferson was the first President’s daughter to serve as the US First Lady.

Dolley Madison:
Dolley was the first official “First Lady”.
She organized the first bipartisan events in Washington.
Dolley saved the portrait of George Washington when the British set fire to the White House.

Elizabeth Monroe:
Elizabeth suffered from ill health as the US First Ladies.
Her eldest daughter, Eliza Monroe Hay, fulfilled most of her official duties.

Louisa Adams:
Louisa Adams was best known as the first foreign-born US lady.
She was born in Britain.

We hope you enjoyed our presentation of the US First Ladies. We use artificial intelligence to imagine and present them at the prime of their age rather than when their husbands became presidents.
The first six daughters of liberty include Martha Washington, Abigail Adams, Martha Jefferson, Dolley Madison, Elizabeth Monroe and Louisa Adams.
