Rose & Time
Rose & Time

Spain was at its peak under Phillip II of Spain, the Spanish husband of Mary I, who sent the Spanish Armada against England. As the son of Charles V, the Holy Roman Emperor, who only had one woman as his wife during his entire life, Phillip had four different wives. Moreover, his wives were his cousins, aunts, niece and the Princess, who almost became his daughter-in-law.
Who are these wives of Phillip II? We want to show you who they are and how they might look in real life in this two-part series about Phillip II’s four wives.

In this video series, we recreated their faces using artificial intelligence and animation tools and imagined what they might look like when they were alive. These AI Tools include the newly launched iClone8, iClone 7 and Character Creator 3 of Reallusion and MyHeritage’s Deep Nostalgia tool.

Most people knew that Phillip II of Spain married Mary I of England.
He proposed to Elizabeth I when she succeeded her sister as Queen after Mary died.
Phillip’s father, the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V, married only one woman in his entire life.
He stayed in love with Isabella of Portugal after her death and carried her portraits wherever he travelled for 19 years until his death.
Unlike his father, Phillip II married four different women, and they were also his cousin, aunt, daughter-in-law, and niece.
Who are they, and how did they look when they were alive?

Maria Manuela of Portugal (1527-1545), the Double Cousin
Phillip’s First Wife was his double cousin Maria Manuela of Portugal.
Maria’s father, John III of Portugal, was the brother of Phillip’s mother, Isabella of Portugal.
Maria’s mother, Catherine of Austria, was Charles V’s sister.
All four of their parents were also the grandchildren of Ferdinand of Aragon and Isabella of Castille.
Phillip married his young cousin Maria when both of them turned 16 in 1543.
Their marriage was one of the most opulent weddings during the period, as Philip was the heir to the Spanish crown, and Maria was the only surviving Portuguese Princess.
Maria died less than two years later, in 1545, and four days after suffering a haemorrhage while giving birth to their only son, Carlos.
Prince Carlos is the central character in Verdi’s tragic grand opera, Don Carlos.
He died when he was 23 in 1568 after Phillip imprisoned him and forced him to spend six months in solitary confinement due to mental instability.

Mary I of England (1516-1558), the Aunt
In 1554, Philip’s father, Charles V, arranged for Phillip to marry Mary, the newly crowned Queen of England.
Mary was effectively an aunt of Philip. Her mother, Catherine of Aragon, and Phillips’s grandmother, Joanna the Mad, were sisters.
Philip was 27 years old and eleven years younger than Mary, who was 38 when they married.
Phillip’s father also ceded the titles of King of Naples and the King of Jerusalem to Phillip before this marriage to make Phillip similar in status to Mary, who was the Queen of England and Ireland.
The marriage made him the King of England and Ireland while they were married.
Their marriage led to the Wyatt rebellion in England, as most English people opposed this marriage.
The English people did not want England to become a Spanish or Habsburg dependency like many other European states at the time.
Although Mary was in love with Phillip, he was never amorously attracted to her and soon left to lead his troops in Europe.
Mary suffered two bouts of false pregnancies during the marriage and died in 1558.
Phillip wrote to his sister, indicating he felt regret for Mary’s death, and proposed to Mary’s sister Elizabeth, but Elizabeth rejected his advances.
