Georgian folk dance: Svanuri

Interpretation of a folk dance that originates from Georgia. Done by Song and Dance National Honored Ensemble - "Georgian Folklore", at the Cultural Center of Tbilisi State Medical University. Recorded in Vila Nova de Cerveira, Portugal, on 05/08/2025.
Svaneti is a beautiful part of the Caucasus Mountains of Georgia, located in the north-west, with its many centuries-old high towers. This region is the highest populated region of Europe. Svaneti is recognized as a cultural Heritage Site by Unesco. It belongs to the group of Georgian ancient dances, the ancient ritual round dances. These dances clearly show the calendar traces of the astral calendar related to the solar celebrations, at different times of the year. During the dance, Georgian men dance on the toes. Dancing on the toes, even for many centuries, predates the genesis of classical ballet. In these movements, in the ancient Colchian-Iberian dances, the content of religious-astral and calendar rituals were also delivered.
