Betelgeuse Is Dimming Again! Just Like the 2019 Great Dimming — Is It Finally Going Supernova?

But recently, scientists observed something unusual happening with Betelgeuse once again. The star has started becoming significantly dimmer, and this time, astronomers have detected something even more interesting.
In an observational report published on October 8, 2026, scientists revealed that the brightness of Betelgeuse had decreased from a magnitude of approximately 0.5 to 0.95 between August and October 2026.
That represents roughly a 34% decrease in its observed visible-light brightness in just about two months.
But the decrease in brightness is not the only unusual thing scientists have discovered.
They have also detected some strange movements happening within the enormous atmosphere of Betelgeuse.
According to the observations, since August 2026, the deeper atmospheric layers of the star have been moving inward rapidly, while its outer atmospheric layers have not been moving inward at the same rate.
And by September 20, scientists discovered that the difference in the radial velocities of these atmospheric layers had reached approximately 5.5 kilometres per second.
Now, that is an enormous difference in movement between different atmospheric layers of the same star.
But here is where this discovery becomes even more interesting.
Scientists have been continuously monitoring Betelgeuse for almost two decades. And according to their observations, during all these years, they have recorded an even greater difference in atmospheric velocities only once before.
And surprisingly, that happened during the famous Great Dimming of Betelgeuse in 2019 and 2020.
But scientists still don't know exactly what is causing this unusual behaviour.
Is it somehow connected to the massive atmospheric disturbance that occurred during the Great Dimming of 2019 and 2020? Could the recently discovered companion star be influencing the movement of material around Betelgeuse? Or is something entirely different happening within this enormous dying star?
And most importantly, is Betelgeuse simply going through another temporary dimming event, or could this unusual behaviour be an early warning that the star is getting closer to its final supernova explosion than scientists previously expected?
