The NBA might not be coming back to Seattle after all,
according to a new ESPN report.
And Fox 13's John Hopperstad joining us in the studio
with the latest on the suddenly uncertain future of the Sonics,
because this looked like pretty much a done deal, John.
It really did, Bill. But let's be frank here.
A lot of our Sonic fans, they've never
trusted NBA Commissioner Adam Silver.
Former Commish David Stern was his mentor,
and Stern was instrumental in moving the Sonics out of Seattle
and then keeping the city from getting another team.
And now this, according to ESPN's NBA insider Brian Windhorst.
Expansion in Vegas, that appears to be full steam ahead, but the league
is now considering a group from Mexico City over Seattle's bid.
Bids for the Las Vegas teams are expected to go for $10 billion
or more, but the league doesn't seem happy
with the bids for Seattle's team right now.
could be considering other locations,
even though Adam Silver announced just last month that Las
Vegas and Seattle would be the only locations considered
for expansion, and that Seattle
was actually ahead in the process.
In Seattle, we have had operational groups out to Climate Pledge.
You clearly have a state-of-the-art arena there,
may require some modifications for
NBA basketball.
But if we were opening in five weeks, we could be ready in Seattle.
So if they consider going somewhere like Mexico City,
it would also seemingly go against the
wishes of NBA owners. Last March,
all 30 of the NBA owners voted in favor of exploring expansion
in Seattle and Las Vegas only.
So we'll know more soon because the final decision
expected by the end of the year. We will see.
