Family members of a Mexican man
who lived in Dallas for decades are now demanding answers
after he died at an ICE facility last weekend in South Texas.
The 56-year-old was detained back in June.
Ticia Muzenga joins us in studio with that story.
Ticia.
Hey, good morning, guys.
We still don't know how 56-year-old Emiliano Andrade Cova Rubias died.
Now, we're still waiting for an autopsy report.
DHS says he received proper care,
but his family believes he was denied medicine.
Now, according to DHS, the 56-year-old was found unresponsive in his
bed Saturday morning at the Rio Grande Processing Center in Laredo.
His family says he had diabetes,
high blood pressure, and a heart condition.
The 56-year-old was detained at the Laredo point of entry back in June.
He was accused of failing to disclose a theft arrest from 2004
when he was applying for his immigration status.
DHS did not say whether he was ever convicted,
but they do say he was awaiting a removal proceeding
from an immigration judge and called it due process.
Democratic Congressman Henry Cuellar,
who represents Laredo, toured the facility on Sunday.
I can't make any promises,
but I did talk to the wife a few minutes ago and
I told her that I would do everything I can
as a member of Congress in the Homeland Appropriations
to get her the transparency and the questions that she has.
Congressman Cuellar says that he saw doctors,
nurses and medical equipment, but
couldn't verify what kind of treatment he received.
He also says he requested surveillance
video and medical records.
Now, Fox 4 reached out to the GEO Group, which is a private company who
runs the detention facility. We were told to reach out to DHS instead.
For Good Day, I'm Ticia Muzenga.
