It's a little gross. I'm sorry if you
are eating breakfast right now, but the health
department found more than apparently 200 live cockroaches,
black slime dripping onto ice,
meant for human consumption at a local hospital, Lakeview.
We're talking about Illinois Masonic.
Yeah, so, and that's just the tip of the iceberg, it sounds like.
There are more disturbing findings
from the city health inspection.
Fox 32's Brian Jackson, live outside of Advocate Illinois Masonic
Medical Center with those details. Hi, Brian.
Good morning to you guys. We have heard from both
the hospital as well as their food service provider
this morning that said that they're
actively working to address some of the issues that were found.
And in the meantime, the patients
here are still receiving meals,
but they're just through alternative sources. I want to get to
how exactly we got to this point this morning.
City inspectors found more than 200 live cockroaches
that were found throughout the food service facility.
Now, that includes some of the areas
where food was being prepared and stored,
the grill, the deep fryer, as well as in the dishwashing area.
Inspectors also found some black slime inside of an ice machine
that was dripping into ice meant for people to consume.
The report also documented grease buildup,
leaking plumbing and food debris on equipment.
Some of these sanitation issues, they're not exactly new.
Inspectors say that they found certain violations from April
that still had not been corrected as of today.
The facility also failed Friday's inspection.
In a joint statement, Illinois Masonic and Morrison Health Care
say that they're taking steps to address the findings
and to meet the requirements to safely resume their kitchen operations.
They also say that patients' meals have been able to continue here
without any interruption using alternative food preparation
as well as service arrangements.
We're still working to find out if any of the food or ice
from the kitchen that was found in this previous inspection
was actually given to any patients here.
We're still working to get those answers for you this morning.
Reporting live in Lakeview this
morning, I'm Brian Jackson, for Fox Chicago.
That is just a tough story to hear. Yeah. You
know? Yeah. All right, Brian, thank you.
