Voters in Alberta have rejected a proposal to step toward independence,
handing a major victory to Prime Minister Mark Carney
and supporters of Canadian unity.
The critical decision came at what
the Prime Minister described as the worst possible time,
as Ottawa navigates a trade war
and annexation threats from U.S. President Donald Trump.
While not a direct vote on breaking away,
a yes vote would have sent the province on a path
toward a future referendum and potentially separation.
I'm an Albertan but I'm also Canadian
and I think I should have never got this far.
So we're voting to stay in Canada and I think that's
the most important thing and we can all work together.
Deep economic frustration drove much of the push for the vote.
Alberta holds most of Canada's oil reserves, leaving many residents
feeling targeted by federal energy policies and ignored by Ottawa.
We've been working in the oil industry our whole life
and we feel robbed, cheated, mistreated.
It's time to stand up and it's time to say stop.
Albertans are hoping Monday's vote settles the debate
and prevents a prolonged independence
struggle like Quebec's, where
the new Parti Québécois government has promised a referendum
on leaving Canada, but not before Donald Trump leaves office in 2029.
Alberta is also recovering from a tragic weekend grass fire
at a military training area
that killed several service members and injured dozens more.
