AI GeneratedThe Washington Commanders fell to the San Francisco 49ers, leaving them with a 1-4-1 record. Despite a late second-half surge to close the gap after trailing 23-3, the comeback failed in the final minutes. The game was marked by poor early decision-making and a significant injury blow to a key team leader.
This game a blowout until it wasn't,
then it was a comeback that just came up short after getting down 23-3.
The Commanders woke up late in the second half, but after scoring two
touchdowns to get within range of the lead, the comeback fell flat.
A pass to Traylon Burks with just under two minutes remaining,
broken up, and then with six seconds left in the game, JD5 sacked.
The Commanders are now 1-4-1 on the season.
Managing Editor for Sports Illustrated, Peter Dewey,
we talked yesterday, here we are again.
And it's very typical of the Commanders
to come up against these 5-0 kind of teams
and be like, okay, somehow they pulled it out.
And they seemed like they were getting close to that.
And then it was just a debacle and so much to break down.
Where do we start, Peter?
Yeah, I think this starts
with the early game decision-making across the board.
They had a chance to get a field goal early in the game,
and they went on a fourth down.
Jaden Daniels just inexplicably threw the ball away.
I know there's a lot being made, whether Dan Quinn seemed
to know that it was fourth down on that possession.
But that's a spot where you kind of need to get some points if you're
Washington, especially playing a team as good as San Francisco.
And to just get nothing out of that play,
obviously, was concerning early in the game.
And I think we talked about it yesterday, but they came out
flat once again where they're down big early in the game.
And it's just hard to climb out
of a hole like that against a 49ers team.
I thought the resolve in the second half showed
that this team's really stayed together over, you know,
the last couple of weeks with everything that's happened
and the tie they had against New York.
But at the end of the day, 1-4-1 is not pretty.
Yeah, and I think that play that you're talking about, right,
that was right before you go into halftime here.
It seems that it's a fourth down.
J.D. Fives got it, and he throws it away.
What do you make of that?
Because the lip readers, right, I mean,
everybody on social media saying
that Dan Quinn had no idea that it was a fourth down,
was surprised when in his headset he's told that it's a fourth down.
He drops the F-bomb.
Obviously, they go into the locker room.
Okay, Coach Quinn is on the mic.
Peter, stay with me here.
Let's listen in to head coach here, Dan Quinn, as of last night's loss.
Surgery, and he's going to miss the rest of the season.
So I had a chance to speak with him last night on the plane
and again after testing today.
And, man, I'm gutted for him as captain and,
like, one of our real leaders.
And so we're all here to support him,
but that was certainly tough news.
Fill you in a little bit on team meeting,
what I discussed with the team.
They're still continuing to go through the game now
to close the chapter on San Francisco.
And I also gave a quick assessment, you know,
from like the first six haven't gone as planned
and had a season of adversity in six games.
And so the reset, the response is what I'm most looking forward to.
But I would also say as a staff,
you can bet as a staff and as a team, we'll work our ass off.
They've become more decisive, more exacting,
and stronger in the execution.
We need that.
This week, as a bye, is a chance for us
to look even more closely at why we're in this situation
and how we're going to do things to absolutely get our way out of it.
So for a stretch last night, we saw the way.
And now for me, how do we sustain that for four quarters of football?
And that's a must.
So with all that said, glad to open it up to you, Charlie.
Let's get it ripping.
Yeah, go ahead, Con.
All right, Dan, first, real quick,
do you have any other injury updates, Javon, Trey Burks?
I don't have those yet, John, with the late return.
Some of the imaging is still going on.
So on Monday, I can give you some of the updates there
and potentially some people working back as well.
But I wanted to give you the update on Terry.
And then with Terry, obviously, he's meant a lot to this franchise.
talk about the significance of the loss
but also do you feel this room is maybe better prepared to
absorb a loss than in the past yeah i haven't gotten
that far down the road yet but um man he
brings a lot john on and off the field
and um i felt him in so many unique ways this season from
training camp to in season and uh like for him
to even like to start the game like he did I thought
was significant um so we do have a deep crew at that position
and we'll lean in you know on a
number of the guys to find some of the unique roles
that Terry does Nikki okay sorry uh David
Aldridge Dan um just to follow up on on Terry um you've got Van
and you've got Bradley and they
both had pretty decent camps there's likelihood that one
or both of those guys gets elevated
it yeah Van would be um you know somebody like we've already done once
and um I agree that he
had an excellent camp to go
and Jalen as well you feel some of the deep plays with Jalen and
that's some of the unique things that Terry has
as well um Burks has some of that Diame has some
of that and so um probably to you know follow up
with John there are guys who have the over the top
speed Terry's superpowers really on the contested catches
and uh that's one of the things that make
him excellent but um it's a big it's a big hit
and uh we'll lean on a number of guys Dan I know
it's hard to compartmentalize a loss
but was it important for your team to show more competitiveness
in the second half and give yourselves a chance
to win the game just going forward for the rest
of the season yes and uh I was surprised we started
as slowly as we did the a um I love the
week I liked where we set ourselves up to go
and just to you know come out and you know not have
the first half that we wanted
was certainly disappointing it felt worse at the half than
what it was and let's get back into it from about
the middle of the third quarter on i liked
the switch i liked the aggressiveness um of what i had saw it
was interesting like defensively i've
been starting fast this was just the opposite you know where
the second half was so much stronger
and um i'm excited to see our team get in sync for the whole time
when i've seen it in spurts i saw
it you know in a half last night and to me that's
when we're gonna be at our best there was parts
that in seattle parts that in many other games
but man truly david that's like to me that's the
secret sauce that's what i'm digging into as hard
as i can to make sure like that stays consistent
the whole way through man all right back to nikki i did
um just curious what did you see from the
o-line um throughout the game
and i know you had said recently that you're still kind of tinkering
with the interior group do you still feel like
that or do you have the group that should be set
for the rest of the season yeah i wouldn't say
that i i wasn't um i thought this performance
was below the standard that we've set for ourself
um at offensive line um and that's like gonna
continue to look and find the right combination nikki
so um i wasn't pleased with uh like the
standard that we have set for our group.
And I don't think we met that yesterday. I thought we
left ourselves short.
