We are where there was this rough landing today.
That's how passengers described it.
And once the plane stopped, it didn't make it to the gate.
The passengers aboard flight
American Airlines flight 41 had quite the experience.
The plane had to blow out tires
when it landed here at O'Hare.
American Airlines reports that flight 41 from Barcelona experienced
a tire issue this afternoon.
The crew apparently had reported a braking problem on approach and
then two tires blew out as the plane was landing.
There were 234 passengers and 11 crew members
on board the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner.
Emergency crews surrounded the plane as passengers exited
by descending stairs on the runway.
A Wooddale man tells Fox 32 that he and his family were
returning home from a dream vacation.
The flight was uneventful until the plane landed,
and then seeing all of the fire trucks
and the first responders was intense.
We landed, it was very, very loud.
I mean, I've had some rough landings before, but this
was just a big boom.
And we knew something was up, but we weren't sure. Everybody kind
of looked at each other and didn't know how to react,
so we just didn't think anything
of it. However, once we got to the end of the runway,
we were moving and that's when
the captain got on and said that we had blown some tires on the way
when we hit the ground.
And so they had us evacuate one by one.
It was a long process because it wasn't just
the stairs that go right up to the plane,
there's like a little ramp so you can't have
too much weight on that, I guess we were told so.
But they got everybody off safely.
The American Airlines staff was fantastic
with everything, everybody was calm.
Well, the passengers had to wait for that plane
to be towed to the terminal so that
they could finally get their luggage.
The airline says that the aircraft has been taken out of service.
It's going to be looked at by their maintenance team.
American Airlines thanked team members
and also apologized to the customers for their
experience.
Live at O'Hare, I'm Joni Long.
Anita.
Joni, I know you've been moving around tonight.
Did the passengers say there was any panic?
There was a lot of curiosity when it happened, apparently.
John Abate said that they all just kind of looked at each other.
He was able to snap some pictures that he shared
with us of the passengers getting off
the plane.
And he said that he couldn't really see
from the inside after they landed what was going
on, but he was texting the person who was going to pick them up.
And the person who was driving around out here saw
the emergency crews and was very
concerned.
did admit that people were a little shaken up after this flight.
As anyone would imagine, I hate
that they went through that, but glad they're okay.
Thank you so much, Joni.
