#132 CAMERA Book Review: Ian Berry - The English

A look through the wonderful photography of Ian Berry and The English through his eyes.
Ian Berry's The English was published by Allen Lane in 1978 following a project made possible by the first major photography bursary awarded by the Arts Council of Great Britain. Although born in Lancashire, Berry had spent much of his professional life working overseas and returned to England with the intention of photographing the country with fresh eyes. Most of the photographs were made during 1975 and explore England through its people, workplaces, homes, leisure activities and public spaces. Rather than attempting a comprehensive national survey, Berry described the book as a personal exploration of English life, acknowledging that it reflected his own observations and experiences.
The photographs range across cities, towns and rural communities, documenting people of different ages, occupations and social backgrounds during a period of significant economic and cultural change. Berry records everyday routines, local traditions, work, recreation and family life with the observational approach that characterises his documentary photography. The English remains an important photographic study of England during the 1970s, presenting a nuanced portrait of the country through ordinary moments rather than national events or familiar stereotypes.
