Getting the Farm Ready Before I Leave My Family for AFRICA

Happy Sunday “seed day”! I still can’t believe I’m saying this…but I’m going to Africa. In this vlog we start getting the farm, my body, and my mind ready for a permaculture missions trip to an agriculture‑based community, while also keeping up with real April homestead life.

You’ll see my “Africa shred plan” (one‑meal‑a‑day and big farm projects), hear how this trip came out of nowhere after a 28‑day fast and a call from an old mentor, and find out why we decided the boys are coming with me while the Beautiful One runs the farm at home. On the ground, we battle weeds in garlic and onions, compare hay mulch vs weed fabric, set up crop garden beds with drip and bug nets for brassicas, and try to get at least one bed fully ready for Rebecca to plant while we’re gone.

In the middle of it all, a surprise heifer calf (Gouda!) shows up from a cow we didn’t even realize was bred, which suddenly means four milk cows to manage, fast‑tracking Minty’s stanchion training and mineral setup while we also check gravity‑fed water, finish grading two acres, and even fix a smoky dryer before it starts a fire. By the end, the garden is tucked in, systems are working, the boys’ Africa support is fully funded, and we’re one big step closer to boarding that plane with open hands and permaculture tools.
