MASSIVE Vikings Trade Update...
Oct 22, 2026
We have a massive Vikings trade update that's sure
to give fans many reasons to be excited
as the recent trade targets
at certain defensive positions would leave the team in a huge win-win
scenario with the options being discussed
by those with their ear close to the grindstone
as we get closer and closer to the NFL trade deadline.
We're going to break down all of that in this
episode of Vikings Digest, but first, we are
getting closer and closer every single day
to hitting 5,500 subscribers before we kick
off against the Indianapolis Colts
on Sunday afternoon, so if you're a part of the 90%
of viewers who are not yet subscribed
and you want to stay up to date on all things
Vikings make sure to hit that subscribe button
and the bell icon so you don't miss any of the
episodes when they drop but that will top right
into the first topic of the day because this is
a big video and that is some stellar safety options
as we have been going through this kind
of New York Times article that Alex Lewis put out
recently where he's been talking about all the
deadline needs that the Vikings need
to make where he listed tight end running back interior offensive
line defensive line and safety we've already covered
the first three defensive position groups
and now we're going to be going into the safety
and the defensive line ones in this episode so
looking at these safety options there is a list
of three really good candidates here and one of
them is going to really make Vikings fans happy
that of course is Antoine Winfield Jr. then you
got Budda Baker and Dane Belton now obviously
the first two names are going to be the ones that jump
out to people the most especially
because Antoine Winfield's dad used to play in Minnesota as well
and it would be a really good legacy kind
of to have within the Vikings organization and he's
overall in top 15 as far as safeties are concerned
for this year his snap count is at 59th out of 155
which isn't too bad hasn't gotten any picks yet
but i think it is absolutely coming he is an
absolute dog he's a Super Bowl champion
and as well as his other PFF grades they also back up
what he can bring to the field
and this Brian Flores system is i absolutely would love to see
what more he can do and how he can kind of fit into this defense
because we know that Harrison
Smith is retiring after this year
so at that point where do you go from there as far as your safety
replacement well if you're looking
at Antoine Winfield Jr his cap hit is going to be pretty
big don't get me wrong but it is going to come
with a little bit of term he's at 31 so you would
be getting a much older safety
however if you're planning to use him as a one-year rental not a bad
option but again this is a lot of things where
a lot of these trades are looking like one-year
rentals where Minnesota is trying
to be a win now team where they're trying to capitalize on this
undefeated season so far try to keep that momentum going
and remain a Super Bowl contender and
hoping to actually pull it off this year
to give Harrison Smith a Lombardi for his final year to
set him off riding into the sunset
and a guaranteed gold jacket in seven years from now so that would
be something that would be awesome for Minnesota I know
a lot of fans want Antoine Winfield to come
to Minnesota however with the age it might
be a little bit more kind of like a short-term kind
of thing where we still have to plan for the future in the draft
and get a new safety or go
a little bit younger and I know this name
is not necessarily going to be younger but Buda Baker you
cannot deny is an absolute dog that's been in this league for so long
and yes he is a bit older he is
going to be expensive but in this scenario I think Minnesota could
also go after him because you want
that veteran presence there we've seen how beneficial
this defense has been by having
veteran presence on that defensive side where Brian Flores has
these guys that are dogs that
are exactly his type of player
so he brings those guys in and makes sure that they absolutely play
the best of their abilities, Kyle Van Noy, everyone thought he
was washed, he's absolutely killing
it this year and then you look at what Jamal Adams would have done
this year i think that he would
have been absolutely fantastic
on this Viking defense i know it's a hypothetical but still
he's a veteran that would have been brought in here
and done exactly what he was asked to do
And we've seen that in the past where Brian Flores brings
in and the Minnesota Vikings and GM Kevin O'Connell and all these guys.
But when Brian Flores gets his hands on a veteran
that is absolutely perfect for his system
and will play their ass off for him, he gets the best out of them.
Isaiah Rogers, no one thought that he was going to turn into the corner
that he's turned into since coming to Minnesota from Philly.
And he's an absolute stud.
James Pierre was a great lockdown corner last year in Pittsburgh.
Brian Flores had familiarity with him.
He brought him in and he's crushing it for Minnesota this year.
Then you look at how Harrison Smith is obviously playing.
He's been still showing he's not washed.
So as much as a lot of people probably want us
to go a little younger to have a bit more
of a long-term option to replace Harrison Smith rather than
a short-term one, I still
think it brings a lot of possibilities where
if Minnesota wants to win now, I think a lot
of fans will be okay if this season ends
in a Lombardi trophy if the short-term or the
long-term is kind of compromised for a little bit down the road.
But that brings me to the other name on the list,
and that was Dane Belton from the New
York Jets where his PFF grade is actually
a lot better than i thought it would be considering he's
playing on the jets that jets defense is playing
a lot better than they did last year the guy like
Belton would fit in perfectly in Minnesota
so when you look at his contract he's not getting paid an
overly huge amount of money he's in a rookie deal
so minnesota can utilize that where they can bring
him into Minnesota all right see how you do in this year
and perform then we can talk about a
long-term extension a bit further on down the line
and as far as all the possibilities of these
three guys I know a lot of guys are going to want me
to go with Antoine Winfield and Budda Baker
I would love that and if we were trying to just win for this year
and not care about the next
couple of years obviously absolutely go and do it
but when you look at the price tags those guys
bring the age that they bring the very little term
that they bring as well with it and where
you're trying to find someone to replace Harrison Smith
and have to go along with Josh Metellus
I think Dane Belton might be the most appealing option
on this list I know a lot of people won't
be expecting me to say that but he's only 25 he's
on a rookie deal you won't have to pay out the ass
for him and as well as you bring him
in here you have something for the long term as well to build
off of and a guy that's actually proven instead
of trying to hit a home run in the draft where we
have not had the best success with Reese
of the past couple years we look at Theo Jackson and Jay
Ward they haven't panned out the way
that they thought they would now a lot of that is due to
being having Harrison Smith being there
and Josh Metellus being there but still we'd want to see
something of a major jump in growth for these guys
to show that they can take over the reins
when those guys step away well mainly Harry in this scenario
so if you're bringing in a guy like
Dane Belton who's already proven can play on a D
on a solid defense in the Jets but goes to an
absolute stellar defense in the Vikings
this secondary could look very very scary and we
could have a three-headed monster
of a rotation where you have Josh Metellus Harrison Smith and
Dane Belton and then when Harry leaves last next year you go
with Metellus and Belton for the next
couple of years to kind of see where you're
at from there let us know your guys's thoughts down
the comments below is Belton the most appealing name
for you on this list because of the age and
the price tag or are you saying nah screw that go big
or go home go for Antoine Winfield go for
Budda Baker and try and win this thing all
this year let us know down in the comments below that's
going to take us into the second topic
which is more d line help do we really need it at this
point because the article did go
into some defensive lineman options that Minnesota could
be looking at you got Zach Seeler you got Deron
Payne you got Mauro Jomo you got Adetomiwa Adebaware
and then you also look at what Zach Seeler has kind
of been bringing to Miami this year
and I know a lot of people will want Zach Seeler
because he is the big name he's the veteran
and he'll bring a lot more insurance or Deron Payne
because he's such a big guy when you look
at his PFF grades so far this year hasn't necessarily
been the greatest of years for
Seeler has he been on the worst defense
in the NFL possibly it could have something to do with
it on a winless dolphins team that's absolutely poverty
but i think if you bring him onto another
team he probably does well however
when you look at the contract and the price tag and how long is
left with it it doesn't bring a lot of flexibility for Minnesota
and it would pigeonhole them because
Minnesota has made it a point and it's been talked about
so much about how the Vikings have made this
defensive line as solid as it
is without overpaying they did last year where you had Jonathan Allen
you had Javon Hargrave in there where Kwesi messed up big time
with those contracts and we paid so
much money to have trenches that weren't necessarily solid you look
at this year the trenches are way
better where you have Caleb Banks, Tommy Orange,
Jalen Redmond, Tyrion Ingram, Dawkins and Levi
Drake Rodriguez and they're all on cheaper deals
so as much as everyone wants Minnesota to go out
and get some of these big name guys they've been doing
so much with so little in cap space as far
as the defensive line is concerned
and i would really like them to continue doing that because
again like a guy like DeRon Payne again he's
a big guy he's got really good PFF grades he could be
very very useful for Minnesota because he's
so massive the way that Tommy Orange is and the
wingspan that Caleb Banks has would absolutely be well utilized
but there is a caveat and that is
the 30 million dollar price tag
and him not being on a long-term deal he does not have term attached
Zach Sieler does not have term attached
but as far as some of the other options that are out there
that is where it gets a little bit interesting where
a lot of people again like i was saying
they want to go they want us to go for the big names some
of the gems are in a little bit of the
hidden ones and that is what takes me to the other two names
on the list and that is Moro Ajomo where
He is an absolute stud right now
on a terrible Philadelphia Eagles team where if you bring
him over to Minnesota, he would absolutely crush it.
If you look at his PFF grades overall,
not the greatest overall, but his snap count is
really high and his pressures are really good.
So if you look at how Minnesota can utilize that,
we're rotating him in and out.
I think he would be a solid piece.
And especially when you look at the contract,
he's on a rookie deal and it won't have a
lot of term with it.
again like a lot of these guys won't have term
but if you're going to pick up a guy with not a
lot of term attached to their contract why not go with a guy
who's not going to cost you very much
or if you're going to give him
an extension he hasn't proven himself to be the guy at his position
where you're not having to overpay for him
so in this scenario if Minnesota were to go get Sealer
and Payne and want to bring them in for longer than just
this year as a one-year rental that's going
to get very expensive but if you bring in a Jomo
or you bring in a guy like Tommy Wall where you
look at his grades as well he's also not the greatest
but he's not terrible as well whereas
overall grade is good enough to be 19th out of 129th
his snap count is very low and his pressures
aren't the greatest but again that overall grade
is what's really appealing to me and what's even
more appealing is that great rookie contract
that he's on or the one year deal that he's on right
now and it still offers a lot of flexibility
for Minnesota where like i've been saying if you have
these guys that are attached with no term i would much rather have
a guy who isn't proven at his
position where we can capitalize on not paying too much
for him out of a rookie deal rather than a
guy like Zach Sealer, DeRon Payne where at the end
of those 30 million dollar contracts they're going
to want another 30 million or 25 or 20 million
because of their age and with Minnesota wanting
to have this kind of fortified for the future
and make sure they can resign a lot of the guys that
are already going to be coming up
on contract it doesn't necessarily make sense to go out and get
these expensive rentals where it looks like
we're already going to be trying to push for
Quenton Nelson if you're looking
at expensive rentals Quenton Nelson's a priority one but if
you're looking at kind of cheaper trades
that Minnesota can make that could help them in the
long term while also really helping them this year Dane Belton
and Mauro Ojomo are the two names that
I'm really looking at and I really hope Minnesota takes
a swing with it I think Adebayo would
also be a really good one either
of those two defensive linemen you can't really go wrong
especially with this Brian Flores defense
but let us know down in the comments below what you guys
think about it do you guys think i'm a little bit
crazy trying to go for some of the unproven guys
even though it would help us in the long term
or do you think that we should go and take a big
swing on these big name guys as expensive one-year rentals
and try and do what the LA Rams did and
try and do what the Bucks did a couple years ago just try
and win this thing in one year and not
worry about the ramifications let us know down
in the comments below is that's going to do if it's
an episode of Vikings Digest thank you guys again
so much for liking subscribing hitting that bell
icon so you don't miss the episodes when they drop
but for now i've been your host Griffin take care
