Will a 24-Team College Football Playoff Reduce Blowouts?

So we were talking about the expanding
the postseason next year to 24 teams that, you know,
Craig was bringing up the fact that the first round matchup,
you might get some blowouts and you might, you know, you might.
The only kickback I would say to that would be, Craig,
that you're not getting, not that I'm putting these teams down,
but you're not getting more of New Mexico or,
you know, James Madison or App State or Marshall.
You're not getting those teams.
Those teams are only going to have one.
From what I read, just like they only have the top non-power four team,
when we go to 24, it's going to be the same thing.
You guys are only getting one.
Sorry.
All the others are just going to be the lesser,
we'll say, SEC or Big Ten teams.
For example, right now,
let's just say that the postseason started today.
Who's ranked 20 to 24 that we really probably don't need, right?
LSU is 18.
Texas is 19.
Florida is 20.
You do have Boise State at 21.
Missouri is 22.
And you got SMU at 23.
So your point being, you're going to get big-time teams,
whether it's the 10-2 or 9-3 Auburns of the world or Florida.
You're not going to get the more Cinderella-type teams,
which creates more blowouts so i think you'll get some blowouts
but not as many as people think
gotcha gotcha yeah um you know i'm looking back
and so this is this is these are the results from
from last season's first round college football playoff
so i and i'm and i'm only saying this to
to out of remembering
and now looking it up to make sure that i was correct so alabama beat
Oklahoma 34 to 24 which I I believe Alabama
was up very big in that game and Oklahoma came back
just to make it 10 Miami Texas Miami Texas A&M
was a horrible game that was a big surprise that
Miami won but they won 10 to 3
but Scott Ole Miss beat Tulane 41 to 10 and Oregon beat James
Madison 51 34 in another game that wasn't close
that was the opening round so but I guess my
point would be is that I am for any system they choose
if they want to go to 80 teams I don't care
but I my recollection of it in in sports it's hard
to remember everything my recollection of
it was the first round of the college football
playoff sucked last year so if you're telling
me that these teams these weaker teams are not going
to be in there and they're not going to
be those blocks and good I'm cool with it
but if somehow we get 30 point wins and 25 point wins in
the first round uh I am going to yearn a little
for the crazy bowl madness that we used to have
and and and that's not what they want that's
not what college football in fact we'll see
there will be no more bowls I'm assuming starting
next year right there's no there's gonna be no
bowls I think I would guess uh yeah I don't know how there could be any
but um so so yeah so I I
guess that that was my uh remembering maybe
that maybe the system that you're mentioning in place
will prevent some of these things that I remember from last year
but what a drag you know to have
two of the games like that and then a third
in Oklahoma just getting smashed by Alabama and the
best game was a 10-3 game
so i'm hopeful that that's not the case next year yeah that's that
that's so you remember right they
were all four bad games uh you know that 17 point uh uh Boise
State game that that was just uh
or James Madison game yeah they were down like 40 you know so why
do you think that so so i i guess the question
is so Scott in your opinion so why do you think that
was like if we go back to last year why do you why
do you think was it mismatched matches was
it the fact that teams got to be at home
and that was a big advantage for them because i remember
going in the narrative was there's no advantage
for the college football playoff because the kids
don't have the tickets and they have to buy tickets
and they're not even going to be at school they're
all going to be home that didn't work out all
the home teams won except for A and M so uh i i don't
i don't really have the explanation
for it i don't know what you think about it yeah i think last
year in particular that's you know
and generally historically like the top four or five six teams
in college football are so much better than
everybody else agree this year that's not the
case this no so i think that's what happens
and i think this year Craig is the perfect like it's
amazing how these things play out
um because you're going to get some good teams this year
that are not going to get into this 12 team playoff
and if it was ever a year right that
They needed to kind of justify going to 24.
You know, when you tell the world Texas is not getting in,
Alabama is not getting in, Penn State is not getting in,
Notre Dame might not get in if they lose to Miami.
Miami might not get in.
I mean, you've got Oregon might not get in, right?
You've got a lot of big-time college programs
that are going to sit there with two or three losses
because they have tough schedules in the SEC and not get in.
So this is the perfect storm.
There's such a balance this year that you can have at Auburn,
go to Georgia and win. You can have a Tennessee
knock off Alabama. You can have
a Kentucky this year. It'd be
halfway decent.
I think we created
with all this NIL money and all these
teams having the ability to go get really good players.
There's just really so many really good teams
that there are in college football.
