Oct 23, 2026
Insiders reveal a massive Hurricanes trade report
for the number one goaltender on the planet.
This news just won't die,
especially with the deadline coming up on Friday.
Will the Hurricanes finally make the move to get him on the roster?
Or is this just another maybe?
We're going to take a look at that today
and I'm going to tell you how I feel about it.

of you the push to 26 begins
so let's go just like the push
for Connor Hellebuyck just won't go away Carolina keeps
coming up in the Hellebuyck conversation
but the latest report also helps explain why Winnipeg
hasn't pulled the trigger speaking
on TSN 690 Darren Dreger said the most consistent offer
appeared to be coming from Raleigh he stopped short
of saying Winnipeg was seriously considering
it that leaves a gap between having an offer
and having a deal also we got a deal for you
we're over on our socials we're over on X we're over
on X okay we're on X uh at Canes Digest click
follow for more over there well there's more
Connor Hellebuyck news coming in and this is one
reason Winnipeg might be holding its price last season
the Jets went 32-27-11 with Hellebuyck
available compared to 3-8
and one during his absence that's the team's record with him
available not his personal record as the starting goalie
per se still Winnipeg struggled through
those 12 games without him it's
a big difference uh Drager described the team as trying to buy
Hellebuck at a discount everybody's trying
to get Hellebuck at a discount apparently and that's
probably why Winnipeg keeps saying no to everybody
for Winnipeg of accepting that discount means
accepting the risk of replacing him well Carolina
also has a reason to be careful Hellebuck finished
last season with an .895 save percentage
so Drager's question gets to the heart of it is the return
good enough they want a goalie they need
a goalie they want a goalie Winnipeg has reason to demand
meaningful value the complication is deciding how much
of Hellebuck's you know best you know
form should be expected back where is he
though that's my question where is he right now
skill-wise mentally during the season
um the bet Carolina would be making is a rebound Hellebuck's
track record gives you a reason to believe
in one his most recent season gives you a reason
to examine that price he posted a .925 save
percentage and 24-25 that fell at .895 and 26
27 those are very different results from the best goalie
in the world Carolina has to decide which
level is more representative
or what it would get moving forward then there's the postseason
question his career playoff percentage you know due
to our research is .902 across 58 games that
doesn't tell you exactly how he would perform behind Carolina's defense
which is probably the
best in the league it does remind you
that a strong regular season reputation doesn't guarantee
the same result in the playoffs let's face it Caniacs we all know
if it did we would have how
many Stanley Cups behind Freddie how many Stanley
Cups would we have behind Frederick Anderson and
his constant regular season performances over
the years exactly for Carolina the decision includes
the likely rebound the playoff outlook
and the defensive environment around him you're buying
the performance you know you expect next not what he just did
and Winnipeg's record without him
needs context too 12 games is a small sample
with different opponents and lineups it's only 12 games
the different supports concern about replacing him
it doesn't prove Hellebuck alone was the reason
my view Winnipeg can reasonably hold out for value
while Carolina can reasonably refuse
to price a rebound as certain
and of course Nikishin still in the conversation I've seen
multiple things today that um Nikishin was gonna have
to be out of the deal because Winnipeg's not
sure if they'll sign with him and if he'll sign with them anyway
so you know if if you're Carolina
you know Drager discussed Nikishin as a possible part
of the Carolina proposal because of his
contract stalemate this is his assessment
of a possible package neither team has confirmed
a complete offer but if Nikishin
is involved Carolina would be surrendering a player with
meaningful NHL production
in the regular season he recorded 33 points in 81 games last season
that gives Winnipeg something substantial to evaluate
and Carolina something substantial
to to lose if they could resign him look
at his five on five minutes alongside Ghost
over 324 minutes Carolina had a 60.8 percent
of the shot attempts that's an encouraging result
for the pairing it doesn't guarantee Nikishin would produce
the same numbers with another
partner or a Winnipeg system if he did decide
to sign there it shows why his value deserves
more attention than simply calling it you know a trade piece
then comes then comes the question
would the term and money create sticker shock
a player's value to Winnipeg depends on whether he
can reach a contract agreement that makes sense
so the Jets have to evaluate both the player
and the commitment Carolina has to weigh
the goalie it would gain against the defenseman
it would surrender if he would sign anywhere keep
the you know Nikishin keep it clear Nikishin was
discussed as you know probable a goalie
in a draft picks would raise the question um you know it's a
big question i think the question now is not would they trade Nikishin
but would Nikishin actually
want to sign in Winnipeg he seems quite picky for a guy
who's just sitting on his couch um the
question was also asked whether Winnipeg would take one
of Carolina's goalies specifically now
the name has been dragged out there
by Drager Brandon Bussy again that was a question about
how a deal might work not confirming that Bussy has been offered
or if he was part of the deal
since we don't know anything about it any goalie
moving out would affect both the trades value
and Carolina's remaining depth, do you want to give up on the guy
who won three Stanley Cup games to
win the Cup for you, I know he's struggling
but you know, do they now see Kochetkov as the goalie
of the future? The Canes' cap hit gives some room
to work. Our snapshot shows a payroll of about 93.8
million against a 104 million ceiling, leaving roughly 10.2 million
that suggests financial
capacity but it doesn't settle a full transaction
the players moving roster decisions or any other
commitment, which that totally still matters
that's why Carolina's current roster belongs
in this discussion. Carolina has to evaluate
the whole team as a potential deal, you know, would the
improvement in goalie justify, you know, what comes out
for him? Bussi is already part of Carolina's
option. If he were included, the Hurricanes would need
to be comfortable with the resulting tandem
and the depth behind it. There are several decisions
to talk about here. What would actually
unlock a trade? First, a return Win
Winnipeg considers worth accepting. Secondly, contract clarity if
Nishikiyanen is involved. Third, a goaltending plan
that works for both teams. A date on the calendar can
increase pressure, you know, it doesn't, you know, really, you know, make
the unsatisfactory offer
better, but it could give some clarity. My position
is that they don't do this. I said it, you know, a
few episodes ago, I said it last night in the short
that I put up that we put up here at Hurricanes
Digest when you have news that Carolina had
the only viable option offer heading out to Winnipeg
um there's even I even have a piece on it up
on DigestSports.com under the Hurricane section
go check it out um is this offer worth it I don't think
this offer is worth it my position is that
they just leave this alone and they walk away
and they don't bother and we're fine the way we are
we don't need Connor Hellebuyck he's you know
an aging goalie no offense to him um we're fine you
know we're fine the way we
are his year last year wasn't great uh we want to improve not just pick
up a name we're the Carolina Hurricanes Dr. Tulsky
does doesn't pick up names it doesn't happen we're
over on our socials real quick at Canes Digest click follow
for more over there um as this comes
down and there's a lot more coming out don't
do it don't do it I don't think we do it I think that
Tulsky holds all the cards
when it comes to Alexander Nikishin I think that yeah Bussy's
struggling now but you know what
if Brandon Bussy picks it up don't forget he's not used to being a
full-time starting goalie you know he's not used
to being an NHL goalie at all and then he comes in
and wins three games in the Stanley Cup I'm
not saying we rest on what happened last season but
we rested on what happened last season a lot
with Freddie to me trading for Connor Hellebuyck is just
trading for a name yeah he's nasty yeah he can come out nasty
but he's been sitting on his couch
this whole time I'm sure he's been skating
but he hasn't seen any actual NHL level movement or
gameplay or anything but he's got to return Friday
because his uh suspension's up from Winnipeg so
do the Canes make this deal? I think they're just buying
a name I don't think they should do it
leave it in the comments tell everybody what you think they should
do should they actually make a
move a solid move for Connor Hellebuyck now
that they pretty much have to decide Winnipeg has to
decide everybody has to decide what they want
to do with this anything else comes down I will let
you know I will be back later with lineup projections
and a little look into tonight's
game versus Edmonton Jarvis is looking promising
but we'll talk about that later
so for Hurricanes Digest I'm Jeff Testinero
let's go Canes we don't need them
