The Talking Preps Interview: Ethan Royal Hough High School
1 Video View·Oct 23, 2026
Welcome back, everyone, to the Talking Preps interview.
This week, got on a good friend,
Ethan Royal, Huff High School quarterback.
Ethan, appreciate you coming on. How are you, bud?
No problem. Doing good, doing good.
Yeah, I would assume you're doing good.
You guys are winning games by halftime as of late.
That's going to be my first question for you.
As a quarterback who's extremely competitive, obviously,
you're not seeing much of the field late in games.
just how are you using this as a kind
of a way to encourage the younger guys
that are getting some playing time late in games?
And I know you texted me this morning, your voice is a little raspy
because you're probably cheering a lot on the sidelines.
So how are you kind of using this as a motivating tool
for some of those younger guys?
I'm just really just helping coaching the younger guys up
and really just helps motivate me to motivate them really.
So just telling them what things they should see
or what I've seen out there
on the first half, kind of like trying
to guide them in the right direction.
So it's a heartfelt moment just being
the teacher instead of actually the player.
Yeah, I got that.
And one thing that Talking Preps co-host
Dale Ross brought up this past week
on Talking Preps OT is possibly in the future CMS redoing conferences
conferences to where Huff is in the conference with Chambers
and uh Butler Mallard Creek teams
like that do you think obviously you're a senior
so you won't see that but do you think a conference
that's a little more balanced would be better moving forward
so a team like Huff isn't playing
teams that they're gonna you know beat
by halftime oh yeah for sure um um that's not
Huff like we always want to play the top like the best of the best
so like if we get if we
getting that conference is going to be really challenging for us
but i mean i feel like we'll
handle our own like we've been doing
the past couple years um but i feel like it would be
a good success if we could move conferences
and get into tougher conferences i got you
to talk about this season obviously undefeated
haven't i don't think you guys have given up
points in conference play i could be mistaken
but the defense is obviously still doing their
thing but how have you seen the offense kind of matriculate
and get to where they need to be
for the postseason because we are just a few weeks away
from uh postseason play i feel like uh as a
group offensively we're all coming together playing
as a one team like there's not a lot of
individuals that's just looking for stats i feel like uh
the run game's working i mean that's what
we're going to roll with but the pass game working we're going
to roll the pass i feel like there's
not one aspect of our offense
that's just how i said it's like focused on one part i think we all
just come together um know our assignments
do what we're supposed to do and reading our keys and
that's what made us so successful these past eight games yeah
and obviously it's probably to
no one to surprise it unless Huff beats Huff
that you guys are the favorites um in the 8a not just
the 8a west but how do you make sure
as the quarterback as a leader of this team that you
don't maybe fall into a slump have a have a rough game
to where I know in that Mooresville game they
were up 10 to 7 after the first quarter
and that was probably a wake-up call like hey look
Nobody's going to roll over for us.
We've got to go out there and assert our dominance.
Yeah, just making sure Monday through Thursday
that we're going 100% to 110%,
not just getting complacent just because of who we are.
Us as captains, like me, Jackson, Ryan, and Tua,
we just got to keep our team on the high standard
and not make sure we get below our standard
because the standard is the standard.
It's like Huff is going to be Huff.
Huff always violent on contact.
So we just got to keep the main thing the main thing
and keep our goal the goal.
Our goal is to go back to the States and win it again.
I hear you, boss.
Well, appreciate you coming on this morning.
I know there's only a few games left in the regular season,
but we'll be seeing each other down the line.
I appreciate you coming on the Talking Preps interview.
