Now, the Andhra Pradesh State Election Commission has
postponed local body polls from October 28th to November 1st
after finding that violence and intimidation prevented candidates
from filing nominations for the polls.
The decision comes just days after
the Supreme Court directed the State Election Commission
to probe charges of large-scale violence
to prevent opposition candidates from filing nominations for the polls.
The State Election Commission has reopened nominations
for 72 wards in four urban local bodies.
For two days, the top court's directives had come
in response to the YSRCP's plea,
which had alleged that violence and threats had prevented
its candidates from contesting the urban local body polls.
YSRCP President YS Jagan Mohan Reddy has accused
the ruling TDP of using intimidation,
violence and state machinery to obstruct opposition candidates.
Violent clashes between the TDP and YSRCP workers have marred filing
of nominations for local body polls in the state.
YSRCP alleges that the TDP is using
the violence to intimidate its candidates.
The party has cited inadequate police security arrangements,
which prevented its candidates
from filing nominations before the deadline.
The TDP, however, has denied these charges.
