For over 70 years a legendary Burt Bacharach helped provide
the soundtrack to American pop music
with his timeless hits. The Off-Broadway musical review Going Bacharach
is celebrating his legacy
with fresh arrangements on some of his most beloved songs.
The cast is joining us right
now with the classic What the World Needs Now is Love and We Need It.
Here they are, Going Bacharach.
Is love,
sweet love,
the only thing?
It's just too
little love
and hillside.
Enough to
climb oceans
and rivers.
Enough
to cross,
enough to last.
Is love,
sweet
love,
not just
for some,
but for
all?
Or listen,
if you
want.
Okay.
A little
bit
about
the show.
Well,
it was
created
by
myself,
Will
Freewald
and Jack
Lewin
and Ted Firth. And it's all of Burt Bacharach's music,
which is the soundtrack to most of our
lives. And yeah, it's been a wonderful pleasure
to put this music together, you know, and play
the songs, some of them like they were originally,
and then reinvent some of them in a new way.
Which ones did you reinvent?
We reinvented Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head. Really?
We'll have to come and see the show to find out just what we did.
So is it sort of like a concert, or is it like a storytelling?
Concert.
Concert.
It's more of a concert.
But there's some storytelling, too, yeah.
There's a little bit, yeah.
And Burt Bacharach, I mean, he was an incredible songwriter, musician.
His music makes you happy,
and yet is like the perfect description of everything, right?
Absolutely.
Do we have a favorite song?
Anybody have a favorite song?
I mean, I'm so lucky I get to sing Alfie,
which I think is one of the most beautiful melodies in the world.
So I feel very lucky having that one.
But there's so many great songs.
John, do you have one?
A House is Not a Home.
I really enjoy singing that, yeah.
Mika?
That's such a good song.
It's beautiful.
Mine is a very obscure one called Whoever You Are,
which is from the musical Promises Promises.
Oh, so have we had any of, like,
Burt Bacharach's muses come in, like Dionne Warwick,
who used to sing a lot of...
I don't know.
Did I read somewhere that Burt Bacharach wrote for Dionne Warwick?
Oh, yeah.
Absolutely.
There's a moment in the show, John, you talk about how he
was kind of the muse to bring both Burt and Hal's lyrics out.
Yeah, I feel like Burt, Hal David, and Dionne Warwick, I feel like
that really is the whole unit that made it what it was, you know?
Anyway, beautiful show.
So we can go see Going Burt Bacharach, the songs of an icon,
playing off-Broadway right now at the Marjorie S. Steen Little Theater.
10 West 64th Street through November 29th.
We've got another month.
We've got to go see it.
Thank you so much.
Thank you.
Appreciate it.
All right.
