My next guest is a great example of how you make
a way out of no way in order to help others.
She's a third-grade teacher from Chattanooga, Tennessee,
who's created a mobile classroom to help bring education
to students in low-income areas.
Please welcome Brittany Harris.
Hi, Brittany.
Hello.
Now, this is a really smart idea. How'd this all start?
Well, it started about three years ago
when I was teaching my third-grade students,
and I analyzed their test scores,
and I realized they weren't not where they needed to be.
So I thought, they can do this.
So I was determined to make their greatest potential happen.
So I thought I needed to partner with the parents.
And with that being said, I thought, make it mobile
so I can meet my families and parents at their front door.
What were you thinking the reason
for the test scores not being what they were?
They needed that extra help from their parents.
So the parents needed to understand
the strategies that the students were learning.
So how did you find this bus?
So, I'm actually from Murfreesboro, Tennessee,
and my hometown, and I was at a Fourth of July cookout.
And I looked in the backyard, and there was a bus.
And so, I told my cousin, who was the owner,
about my vision to transform a bus into a classroom, and he listened.
And then about a year later, he called and said,
hey, do you want to purchase this bus?
And so, being the school teacher that I am,
I had my hustle, working a couple jobs in the summertime,
and then I was able to take those funds and purchase the bus.
So, what do the students learn
from your bus?
So, primarily we focus on math and also literacy.
And so, they come on board free of charge for four weeks
and 30-minute sessions
where we teach the parents alongside the students.
And they build these resource notebooks
that they can take after the session
so they can keep this learning in progress.
So, have the test scores improved?
Yes, it was nice to see that The Passage has had,
with our family, 75% growth in literacy
and 80% growth in mathematics and then 85% growth in behavior.
That's pretty good.
So how is your program funded?
So in 2017 in September, The Passage became a nonprofit,
so we were able to apply for grants and then do a couple fundraisers.
Well, I think what you're doing is great.
and my wife and I, Marjorie,
she would like to help your mission to educate the kids.
So the Stephen Marjorie Harvey Foundation
is gonna be giving you $5,000 towards school supplies
and stuff like that for your bus to help you do your work.
Thank you.
Doing a good job.
So tell Marjorie thank you.
We'll work all that out.
Hey y'all, give it up for Brittany.
Best of luck to you.
