Here's a sneak peek behind the doors of P.E.I.'s new and improved Province House
Oct 23, 2026
Tomorrow is the day a lot of people have been waiting for.
The day Province House officially reopens to the public.
It has been under construction for 12 long years.
There is a private event tonight to mark the occasion.
And that's where we find Wayne Thibodeau.
He's there tonight live.
Wayne, what's going on?
It's noisy there already.
Yes, there's so much excitement here.
We're already starting to see people funnel in.
This really is the official ceremony.
You can see behind me here the red ribbon well
in between all the people.
And look at this, Louise. This is it.
This is the golden scissors that will be used
in about 45 minutes' time to cut that red ribbon behind me.
As you said, this is a project that's
been going on for a long time, 12 years.
Tonight, it's by invitation only. It's for dignitaries,
so MLAs, the lieutenant governor, former speakers.
I've run into a number of former MLAs here.
And as I said, that ribbon cutting right here gets underway
in about 45 minutes' time.
then this building will be officially open yeah
12 long years it's it's incredible that this day
is finally here and tomorrow of course
the public will get to see what can they expect
yeah this all begins for the public tomorrow there will actually
be a parade as you mentioned
from lower water street in downtown charlottetown
coming up great george street to the front doors
of province house a lot of people don't know
the front doors of province house are actually the
ones that face the water
so that's where the parade will take place that gets underway at 9 30
then there will be official opening at 10 o'clock for the public
then the building is wide open now
earlier today i got a chance to talk to joey jeffrey he's
the clerk of the legislative assembly
and it's easy to say he's pretty excited by all
this it was emotional honestly it was really um
you know we've been we've been watching
this project for the last 12 years and walking in
when it really started to feel like it was very close
to completion was was very moving it was a
beautiful building and to see it kind of restored
to its former grandeur was was very exciting
and this was quite the project every single stone inside now
was removed cleaned and either restored
or refurbished, think of it as one of the biggest Lego projects
in PEI history. Now there was also
101 windows 77 doors had to be replaced
and restored carefully. Now we said many times before
that they've kept one room in particular under wraps
and that is the Legislative Assembly where
the MLAs actually sit. That room will stay under
the wraps until after the official opening at
about seven o'clock tonight
and as I said, this all comes with an incredible cost, about 12 years
and 138 million dollars, but tonight for all
that work, Louise. All right, thank you so much
Wayne. That's Wayne Thibodeau reporting tonight live
and on Monday I'll be down there doing
parts of Compass live from Province House, we'll
be joined by a couple of guests talking about
what, how big this project really was. That's
on Monday on Compass. Thanks, Wayne
