This news segment discusses escalating tensions involving Iran and Russia. It covers attacks on oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz, Russia's strategy of targeting Ukrainian civilians to break their will, and the geopolitical alliance between Tehran and Moscow. Additionally, it mentions Melania Trump's humanitarian efforts to secure a temporary ceasefire for elderly citizens in Oleshky.
Turning to the Iran war,
Tehran says seven oil tankers were attacked in the Strait of Hormuz.
Rebecca Heinrich joins me now.
Does this signal to you
that we're getting closer to a return to combat?
Well, it does demonstrate, Stuart, once again,
that the people in power in Tehran
do not want diplomacy or negotiation with the United States.
So even though the United States is doing incredibly well militarily
and has really maintained control of the Strait of Hormuz,
it does not mean that the IRGC has relented
and isn't trying to do some damage.
So the overwhelming evidence shows
that the United States is helping to shepherd
lots of oil through the Strait
and around the Strait, but in the region.
But that doesn't mean that the IRGC
isn't able to inflict some damage
and also increase the insurance rates,
the liabilities that people are paying
as they do move commercial shipping through the Strait.
One more, Rebecca.
Russia released a new wave of strikes
on Ukraine hours after agreeing to peace talks.
Retired four-star General Jack Keane thinks Putin has
no intention of ending this war.
Watch this
So Putin, last night is evidence of it, he can't defeat Ukraine's army.
Not happening.
But he's trying to defeat Ukraine's people.
And he wants to break their will
so they pressure the government to make major concessions to Russia.
That is his tactic on the battlefield.
And he's a war criminal in doing it. He is targeting
completely civilian targets.
Do you agree with General Keane's strict and harsh analysis there,
Rebecca? Absolutely.
Stuart, Russia views the United States as its number one adversary,
and all of our partners and allies are really a subset of that.
And so the Russians at this point,
they know that they cannot defeat the Ukrainian military
on the battlefield. Ukraine has retaken
more than 50% of Russian-occupied territory
and is now essentially a drone superpower.
And they're not going to relinquish territory
that the Russians have not taken on the battlefield.
And also, the Ukrainian people have
demonstrated incredible resilience and resolve.
But it is the Russian strategy at this point
to try to wear out the civilian population.
And in doing so, it is committing war crimes.
Last point, the foreign minister of Russia,
Lavrov, Stuart, just was in Tehran and committed
to supporting the Iranians economically, politically.
there's evidence that they've
also supported them militarily, maybe doing so right now.
So the Russians also understand that they
are attacking the United States via this proxy state,
the IRGC in Iran. So there's no sign
that the Russians are going to slow down their
adversarial approach to either Ukraine or the United States.
First Lady Melania Trump's office
says she, not the president,
secured a temporary ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine for the
Ukrainian city of Oleshky. Is there any significance to that?
So the first lady, Melania Trump, really
is the humanitarian here, Stuart.
She is now trying to help. These are primarily Ukrainian
elderly people who are still trapped in this Russian occupied city
and they need help. And so
she has focused on trying to do what she can
in this horrible war of aggression caused by the
Russians to help the Ukrainian people.
So that is significant, but it's just a tiny thing at this
point. She's also been a great advocate for Ukrainian children
who the Russians continue
to kidnap as they try to essentially commit
a cultural genocide against the Ukrainian people.
But I don't think it's going to affect
the larger strategic direction of the Russian war against
Ukraine. True, but she's doing something, and that's good.
Rebecca, thanks for joining us.
Always appreciate it. Thanks, Stuart.
