James Kaufman, World News Report, today.
Ladies and gentlemen, we've had a large 7.4 magnitude earthquake,
and wouldn't you know it, right after two days of solar winds,
and our plates being charged.
We're expecting an uptick in earthquake activity.
A 7.4 magnitude is a large quake.
This happened right offshore, right near Fukushima, Japan,
Right where it didn't need to occur,
they put some of Fukushima back online last month or the month before,
and they built seven new nuclear power plants in and around Japan.
What a terrible place to put a nuclear power plant, where four
plates meet and where four or five volcanic ranges or ridges meet.
Now, the two days of geomagnetic storms around the globe caused
an uptick in overall earthquake activity as well.
We see we had a small quake here in New Madrid,
and then we have two hazardous regions here.
We've got some quakes there.
You can see all the quakes we've had up in the Cascades
and even in Yellowstone here.
So, definitely an uptick.
the 7.4 being a really big quake came in as a six on the deal
but FYI a six on the shape
map there was an associated tsunami not tsunami warning
although it was very small they say the
depth is 35 kilometers and i'm guessing the source here
is the USGS we'll zoom in real quickly and
take a look see if anything crazy happened up here
and it doesn't look like anything crazy happened
we have three of them flanking Mount Rainier here
and one of them just north of Mount St. Helens
this is Adams, this is Hood, so it's not as bad
as it looks there for sure until you zoom in you don't
know that 7.4 is the story of the day let's take
a look at that all right over to volcanoes and
earthquakes.com we see the main source usgs 7.4 35 kilometers
the french came in at six nine
National Research Institute for Seismology
that's 7.4 35 kilometers they often just follow
the usgs i really don't even know why they're in business
or pretend to be look at all the
aftershocks that happened in this exact area you can't even see
the island of japan we're going
get some detailed information here
but i wanted to show you all those aftershocks again we have
the north american plate pacific plate euro asia plate
and the indonesian plate all meeting right
there near tokyo yokohama and well we have four
or five different volcanic ridges all run into
that same exact area
as well yet they keep building nuclear power plants in the area
All right, a major magnitude 7.4 earthquake,
as we know.
Let's take a quick look at that map there.
You can see it was about 100 miles offshore.
Fukushima is really, as you can see,
a little further south, but this was very sizable,
and you can see it is where the plate tectonic boundaries
are coming through right here.
So, never a good spot to build a nuclear power plant.
i've been telling them
and telling them telling them this is from volcano discovery.com
now this is the info i was waiting on for
7.4 35 kilometers but 118.7 atomic bombs
were the energy released
for this earthquake you would think it would cause a large
tsunami although tsunami was between seven
and eight centimeters as we'll take a look
in just a moment now we only had 107 reports
of feeling this earthquake which is amazing and most
of them didn't say they felt that it
was very large i don't see anything really in orange or
red here it's amazing with such a big quake i guess it
was far enough offshore very very strange
you can see one report a white coming out
of south korea over here all right we've had at least 30
aftershocks with this earthquake
so it is continuing to rumble over that area take a look
at some earthquake data reported
by different agencies first the usgs 35 kilometers 7.4
Then we have the Australians coming in at 7.37.
Can't get much closer than that.
They have it very, very shallow here at 3.70 kilometers.
And they have a plus or minus of 6.2 kilometers.
So very strange.
I've not seen it reported that way.
Let's see.
And those were the Australians.
Then we have the French coming in at 6.89.
always on the low end of things.
Default depth, you can tell by the asterisk, of 10 kilometers.
They couldn't determine how deep it was.
Incorporated Research Institute for Seismology,
a 7.4, 35 kilometers, following the USGS.
Germany came in at 7.37,
and, well, they've got it at about 29 kilometers,
plus or minus 1.78 kilometers.
so they're right on par next we have indonesia coming
in at a 7.3 default depth 10 kilometers
the italians coming in at 7.5 right it's
the highest one yet also 29 kilometers they always
do a real good job with their work
and the europeans coming in at 7.4 10.9 kilometers what
strange depth that is and then we have well
the norwegian national seismic network coming in at
7.4 at 35 kilometers of depth all right over
the national data buoy center we actually had three
buoys going to event mode here
we had 21 42 100 we had 21 413
and we had 21 419. now i'll pull
all those buoys up individually since you're
at water column height this is the event there in red
all three of the buoys indicate that we did have
a tsunami between seven and eight centimeters high
watch out kendall in hawaii
so they all said the same thing this is the largest one
out of the three this is 21420 water column up here
and here's our event in red and we also have
about seven centimeters
a huge tsunami right that's 21 413
and lastly we have well it looks
about like seven centimeters maybe six centimeters uh
a tsunami down here this is the event and here
we see the event of the water column height uh
so there you have it not much of a tsunami but
I guess we could say that there was a tsunami created.
So, definitely an earthquake uptick after
our two-day geomagnetic storm.
Story of the day, the 7.4 over off the coast of Japan.
118.7 atomic bombs worth of energy released.
A 7 to 8 centimeter tsunami created.
And it is a wrap.
Please give us a thumbs up for covering it for you guys.
and please share if you will
and always remember that anything's possible Bizarro World
