Video Summary
AI GeneratedA field recording of an expert collecting small fish in a canal near LaBelle, Florida. The presenter demonstrates a specific netting technique used to capture rare, tiny fish in extremely shallow water, specifically identifying the Okefenokee killifish.
We're live, and we're out in the field.
I can read this. I can't read it.
All right.
I'm not going to be able to read much on the screen.
I'm on my phone.
I can't even tell if there's anybody here.
We're out in the field collecting.
I can't tell whether anybody's here.
I guess I'll wait a few minutes.
We got two, three.
We got some people there.
I can't read your names,
so I'm not going to be able to say hello uh four
or five east of Lavelle uh Fort Myers
now what I want to do is I'm going
to show you where we are we're at a uh a little canal
where we were a week ago
that's Frank over there he's collecting last week we were here
and we caught
Elisoma. I thought it was
Everglade. I do
not believe it is.
I believe it's Okefenokee.
And I'm going to show you how we do this.
I'm barefooted so
I'm walking a little awkwardly.
Okay.
And I walk awkward anyway.
Frank's going to come over and
film.
So he's going to show me catching
this stuff. This is right on
the highway on Route 29.
coming out of LaBelle. We are southbound out
of LaBelle headed toward the Everglades
and we found this spot after looking at dozens
and discovered Elasmobranch here which is a little fish
I've been struggling to find for the last couple of years.
We've been here about 20 minutes and
have caught probably 10 to 15 so i want to give you uh
an idea of how we catch them these fish
are in an inch or less of water so it's it's a kind
of a unique technique for collecting them
you can see the net frank has i have one just like it
and we're gonna give you an idea of how
this works here it comes okay i think yeah
this is mostly working
if you simply hold it like this
yeah you'll have me i'm looking at you right now you are yeah
so if you turn this turn it toward
me oh nice aren't they are so pretty aren't
they what you got oh is it dead oh it's alive
what is it water snake yeah
no roadie i don't know what type it's probably a banded it looks like a
Looks like a banded. Yeah. Yeah, I would say it's a banded.
Yeah, it's a banded. It's hard to tell on their time. For sure.
Yeah, nice. Definitely looks like it. Nice.
All right, what I'm gonna do is I'm gonna work this area here.
I'm gonna go down
there. You letting them go? Yeah.
I'm gonna go down there and work that like 10-foot area.
That's okay. I've already done that. Okay.
I'm gonna go out in the water and do it.
My buckets are already there.
Remember, there's gators.
Yeah, I know.
Okay, with all those...
Oh, that's people communicating with you.
Yeah, right.
Okay, I got you.
Yeah, you can almost breathe.
Well, how many do you think you have, Lou?
I've got five or six.
I've got nine of them, believe it or not.
Yeah.
I got five in one scoop, though.
I'm over it,
but I've got to work for it.
Okay, very good.
Definitely a father fish in his native environment.
I am.
I'm hoping not to step on a piece of glass,
because I don't have my boots on, or hoodies.
Alright, here's the principle, guys.
You get this up as close to shore as possible.
Want me to stomp?
Look down here, see this?
I'll stomp it for you if you want.
Don't stomp it, just let it keep going.
No, stomp it. I meant stomp the ground there.
Oh, yes, stomp it.
You want me to? Okay.
Yep, okay.
Okay
Yeah, little Molly
And a walking cat is that a walking cat yeah
that thing will stick you like crazy. I think that's what it is
You gotta throw one sure let him walk back
in I know he will poke the living dog out of you be careful
Turn them over. I want to see if we got anything in here first
No, another phormosa, a couple phormosas.
Yeah, these are phormosa, this is a little tiny live
and I am keeping them
because they're just such a neat little fish.
Those are females.
The male, this is a male.
The male is substantially smaller.
That might be a female, yeah.
Hard to say.
Yeah.
I think that's a walking cat, though.
I stepped on one once and...
Well, wait a minute now.
I don't...
Yeah, it is.
It's not a tomthumb, is it?
I don't know, actually.
Oh, he's loose.
Yeah, he's loose now.
I thought it was a walker, but...
I don't know that fin.
I don't know anything about the fins.
All right, let's try
that dorsal one, what we're doing
is scaring them out there, up in very shallow
water, we're scaring them out into the net is the principle
and so far we're not doing a thing
that is it for most, yeah that's it for most of them, let's try one more
and then we'll just go
back over there where I know there are some
try right here, this looks yeah okay, oh come on
come towards me, you can, it drops off off
the rocks right here, yeah I got it, okay a lot of
little stuff, what are we looking at, shrimp
and then gambusia, do not see one, no gambusia I don't
see a couple little fromosa, yes, oh well all
right, let's go back over here, yeah these are the
rocks here, I think it's too steep of a drop off, see
though it goes from right here to right there
it goes down there, I know that you like
this the shallow, you're the one that showed me the shallow
works better, no I was catching them all
the way back to here, I was catching them all the
way back towards this, right this, oh I see, yeah you've
been here, yeah I've been all through there
I was catching every place that I went back to, I
was catching them, want me to get them, let's do
this first.
I've been here but that doesn't
mean I got everything.
Oh no. Come on little fellas.
Pretty, pretty blue. Yeah a little blue.
That's funny. I've been getting right along every
every dip I've gotten at least one until I started
with all these guys watching
and now I'm getting nothing.
Well to be fair this is an area where these are all water
beetles crawling around in here it's loaded
with water beetles yeah it is i don't see sometimes
they won't hop yeah i know they're just laid there
yeah i thought i only had one when i had the five
yeah and the other ones just sat just like you just said up in here
and then the uh in the uh
roots there's no water right here yeah let me
get it oh you're going way back there yeah i'm
trying
to get out yeah normally you
can spot them right away
they're very distinctive
tiny but distinctive
all right lou too much of
a wall huh okay there got
one okay can you focus
in on them um there's a lot of glare hold
on um i'm sure i'm looking there he is i'm sure you're
looking at him he's in the shadow get him
in the light okay that's a male and it looks like he's
got bands the the male everglade eye is black
with tiny blue spots this is more brown with a
pattern which is the uh Oka Funoki
so that's what it is where's
my bucket over here yep never never
seen a man get so excited about a or a brag about
a fish they didn't have to lie about
okay it's only three quarters of an inch long okay i've got
a lot more water in there than i need
we flip this back and i'm gonna go
back to the van grab and we'll chat
a little bit if i get in
the van where it's
a little darker what huh
hold on one molly and one
blue fan and the rest are
Oh yeah look at that. He's got a bunch of them in there.
Very nice. Yeah we got about 15 so far.
