We begin tonight with developing news out
of the South Bay where police say a suspect with a machete
attacked a neighbor and then barricaded
himself inside a house in San Jose,
refusing to come out. KTVU's Betty Yu, live tonight at the scene.
Betty, what's the latest
there? Well, Mike, just minutes ago,
San Jose police just took down the crime tape and began
clearing out of this area.
They were just standing right behind me speaking to some residents in
front of this home. All of this after
an hours long standoff involving a man accused of attacking
his neighbor with a machete.
Now this afternoon, we watched as heavily armed officers surrounded
a home here in East San Jose.
We saw what appeared to be the suspect taken into custody. Officers
were seen placing him on a gurney,
tending to him and then securing restraints around his ankles.
There was a heavy police presence
in this East San Jose neighborhood for much of the day.
Officers armed with rifles,
including one with a police K-9 and a SWAT vehicle,
all responding to the 1800 block of Naples Drive.
San Jose police say they were called here just after 9
this morning for a disturbance involving a weapon.
Investigators say a man attacked
his adult male neighbor with a machete.
The victim was taken to a hospital and the suspect
then retreated into his home, refusing to come out for several hours.
Meanwhile, neighbors gathered all along
the street watching this standoff unfold.
I spoke with several neighbors,
but they did not want to speak on camera.
They told us violence in this part of East San Jose isn't all that
unusual, but this particular kind of violence is out of the ordinary.
Now, at this time, we don't know what led up to this attack,
and we also don't know the condition of the victim,
but we will continue gathering more details
and bring them to you as soon as we get them.
Mike.
Got it. Betty, you live tonight
in the South Bay. Betty, thank you for that.
