Fox 2 Sportsworks starts now.
Good evening, all, and welcome to Sportsworks Sunday night.
Tonight on the show, we'll look at the Pistons and the Red Wings,
as well as the weekend in college football with Birchie
and Rieger at the roundtable.
But we start tonight with the NFL in a huge game between
the Detroit Lions and the Green Bay Packers.
And with Detroit entering this matchup off the bye week,
the expectation was that the Lions would come out energized and ready
for whatever challenge Jordan Love and the Packers would present.
But would the game go according to that plan?
to Ford Field we go after the Packers
missed a short field goal on their first drive
Detroit went to work on offense
Jahmyr Gibbs with a great blitz pickup
and Jared Goff found Jameson Williams for a gain
of 24 yards down to the
16 and that was looking sweet
next play Goff fires it out to Jamo
and he does the rest down the sidelines
and then he dives in for the score
Lions on top 7-0
now late in the first quarter Green Bay answered
on 3rd and 9 Jordan Love
able to roll out and find a wide open Tucker
craft for the touchdown that tied things up
at seven second quarter lions up 10-7 green bay drove
to the lions seven going for it on fourth
and four love to matthew golden in the flat but there was
dj reed to wrap him up the lions d coming through huge
to get the ball back and the offense was
rolling down the field Goff hitting Amon-Ra St. Brown four times
for 51 yards they moved it to the
12 Jahmyr Gibbs taking it up the middle
but he lost the football the packers were able to fall
on it a missed opportunity for Detroit
who went into halftime with a 10-7 lead now in the third
quarter the Lions got the ball first
but they didn't have it for long second play and Goff
does not get the snap cleanly it was free
on the ground where the Packers fell on it
another turnover for the Lions
and Green Bay was able to cash in Jordan Love to Josh Jacobs who
breaks some tackles and scores from 25 yards out just like
that the Lions were behind 14-10
but the offense had an answer they drove to the 10
and that's when Goff found Jamo again
His second touchdown of the game in Detroit was back in front, 17-14.
Now late in the third quarter,
the Lions were at the Packers' six-yard line.
They go for it on fourth and five.
Goff looking for Jamo again,
but Brandon Seavey pushed him out of the back in the end zone,
couldn't get his feet down, and Green Bay took over.
And the Packers were looking to make a big play.
Jordan Love going deep, putting the ball up for grabs,
and it's Brian Branch who comes down with it.
Welcome back, BB.
but the Lions offense could not do anything,
and Green Bay was able to tie the game
with a field goal on their next drive,
and it was a brand-new game at 17-all.
Then things got a little crazy.
Lions going for it on fourth and a long one at their own 24.
Come on, man.
That had no chances.
Gibbs was crushed in the backfield.
It looked like that play call blunder
was going to cost Detroit the game,
but Packers rookie kicker Trey Smacks' 35-yard field goal for the lead
was tipped by D.J. Wanham and went wide right.
New life for the Lions, and they took full advantage.
driving down to the 12 where Gibbs picked up nine yards on third
and seven he went down at the three
to let Detroit run down the clock
and that set up Jake Bates for a game-winning 22-yard field goal
with one second to play and of course he drilled it week seven
was a wild one at Ford Field but
the Lions survive and win it 20-17 Jennifer Hammond
as the wrap from downtown the way this division
stacks up the lions knew that this was a gotta have it game
and while it wasn't always pretty
They relied on their grit and leaned on their bread and butter
to edge out the Packers in a slugfest at Ford Field.
Everything we talked about, the way we needed to play this game
against that Hawks offense, getting Jacobs back,
was we had to try to eliminate
or limit what those two receivers could do
and try not to let them behind us.
And, man, I thought our back end, it wasn't perfect,
But I thought they played really good back there.
Between a disruptive front and sticky coverage on the back end,
the defense was the bigger story of the game.
And there were several guys
who stepped up to do their part as a cog in the machine.
We still left a lot of plays out there again,
you know, that comes with it.
But we all played a hell of a game.
And, you know, just proud to be a part of the secondary.
You know, we've been through a lot.
And now it's time to hit the ground running now.
Availability and flexibility of what you can do.
So it's really learning all the positions,
even if you're not going to play it,
and kind of just tying it in there.
I know that my safeties will help me if I need help,
or my nickel will help me if I need help,
or if I'm playing nickel or vice versa, whatever,
that we'll all help each other out.
Because, you know, in the back end, it's just us, you know.
So we've got to be there for each other.
How did you get up and get a finger on that?
Because that thing was just off his toe quick.
We just got off the ball.
We knocked the whole line back.
We was doing it the whole game,
and we knew we kind of had them set up for it that last field goal.
And we got off the ball, knocked them back,
and we all got our hands up, and it hit mine.
As much as the defense kept them in it,
Jared Goff is still the maestro of an offense
that continues to show they can do what they want when they need it.
We did a good job of trying to, even with the bye week,
pull back some of that momentum in practice
this week that we had in Arizona
and build that into the game.
I think it starts up front with the O-line.
I thought they had a great game.
They really did.
and moving the line of scrimmage and then giving me a nice pocket.
When those guys do that, man, certainly in the first drive,
like you're asking, we can do anything.
Gritty football, it come down to the end of the game.
You know, it's two good football teams going back and forth 60 minutes.
You know, I think that's the best experience
you can get from a game like that,
a shootout come to the last second.
You know, it's the most entertaining thing
you can watch when it comes to the game.
We know what type of game it's about to be.
We knew what type of game we had to make it.
and there was a lot of meat left on the bone out there.
I'm not going to lie, but we're going to go back,
watch the tape, clean it up, and it's on the next week.
Good news for the Lions.
They'll play another game at home next Sunday,
but it's going to be a tough one against the division-leading Vikings
who improved to 6-0 on Sunday.
At Ford Field, Jennifer Hammond, Fox 2 Sports.
Thanks a lot, Hammer.
Let's get to the roundtable for official introductions.
And when I'm behind the wheel, these boys love to ride shotgun.
On my right is that rascal Jeff Rieger from 97.1 The Ticket.
If you are, on my far right is that scallywag, Will Birchfield.
Birchie can be found on 97.1theticket.com.
All right, guys, what impressed you more, the way Detroit won this game
or the way it handled the pressure of the divisional showdown?
Well, I think it's how they handled the big receivers for Green Bay.
I mean, listen, I was one of these guys all week.
I'm like, you got to watch out for Watson.
You got to watch out for Golden against that Lions secondary.
Oh, boy, two receivers combined, less than 100 yards.
Tucker Kraft didn't do much either.
I kind of think he was open more, but for some reason,
Jordan Love didn't find him with the exception of the touchdown.
To hold them to 17 points, injuries or not,
I was pretty impressed with that secondary.
What about you, Will?
Yeah, the answer to your question is yes.
Everything that's been posed here was impressive.
And with the Vikings winning today,
it really was essential in the scope of the NFC North to get this win.
Otherwise, you're three games back going
into that game next week against Minnesota.
And look, they did enough to win today.
And they got some favors from the officials,
which almost never happens.
And they got some favors from the Packers with two missed field goals.
But they also gave the Packers some favors.
Two fumbles, one near the end zone,
and they overcame some of their own issues.
And I thought that Cade Mays and Brian Branch,
in their debuts, both made impacts on this game.
Branch, obviously the interception, ends up playing twice
as many snaps in the second half as the first half.
Clearly the coaching staff realized we need this game.
we need him out there
and then Kadenze was moving bodies for most of that game especially
in pass pro and that is his strength
unfortunately he did cause a fumble
or a punch house Kadenze took
that a little bit too literally defensive line i think how
much confidence does this win give
the Lions moving forward I mean you mentioned Minnesota
now they're undefeated but still Lions looking good right now
so the Minnesota Vikings played
the Colts, and Brian Flores blitzed the Colts on 85,
or at least pressured at 85% of Daniel
Jones' drop back.
Is that a lot?
I think it's a record.
It's actually not for Flores.
Actually, it's a day off for him to tell you the truth.
But no, I mean, I think it's huge going into the Minnesota game.
I really felt, and Will said it, you needed this win,
not only to be 1-0 in the division,
but I felt if you lost this game,
people would start to question, has this team been any
good?
You beat the Jets, you beat the Saints,
and you beat the Arizona Cardinals, right?
So I think you needed this win, not to mention,
defensively, two weeks in a row,
my standpoint where the secondary has been pretty shaky
Detroit went 71 yards with the game tied
What did that final drive tell you about Jared Goff in this offense?
Well, what we know about Goff, which is that he really is clutch
and he's playing as well as he's ever played,
maybe better than he's ever played.
And the protection today was great.
At times when it broke down, he showed just enough maneuverability,
just enough athleticism, dare we say, to move within the pocket
extend plays in his own ways, and find receivers downfield.
And, you know, we're almost numb
to how well Jared's played for three, four years now
But he really is this year especially playing at an all-pro level
And there were MVP chants at times today
in Ford Field along with Jared Goff chants.
And he deserves all of that praise coming his way.
Totally agree with you.
His stat line today, 303 yards, two touchdowns, zero interceptions.
Keeps on doing it.
MVP caliber season in the works.
Listen, guys, a huge day for Jameson Williams as well.
Two TDs for his second straight week.
Is he getting closer to being that game breaker we need him to be?
I mean, I think so.
And I think Jamo's so important regardless.
Like, when all the Sam Laporta stuff over the weekend happened,
and everybody's like, ah, you know, we don't need Laporta.
And then there was other people that said, you're paying Jamo.
Why won't you pay Laporta?
I think people don't realize how important Jamison Williams is.
Not only is he capable of doing what
he did today with the two touchdowns.
And by the way, why was Green Bay defending Penei Sewell instead
of Jamison Williams?
I mean, that's just the game breaker that he is.
Because he's an elite athlete, that's why.
I also feel people don't realize what a decoy Jamo can be as well.
And how many defensive backs he pulls from the defense as well.
And he's always needing of a game plan from the opposition.
So, I mean, I think he can kill you both ways.
And today he was great.
We know about the Lions offense,
but they held Green Bay to 60 yards rushing.
What does that statement say about the defense?
Well, it says the Packers still can't run the ball,
even with Josh Jacobs back.
And they haven't run the ball well all season.
And the Lions did not let them change that today.
Have you changed your thoughts on Kelvin Shepard after this one?
Yeah, I have.
I thought that Kelvin Shepard made some
good adjustments against the Cardinals.
I thought he stuck with those today.
I thought DJ Reed had another really good game today.
And D.J. Reid really has to play to his standard
that he set in the first four games of last year
and really before he signed here with the Jets,
which was I can be a cornerback one on defense.
And I think for the past two games, he has begun to show that.
All right. Well, anytime that there is a Lions win,
the locker room starts its postgame celebration.
And tonight it was no different. But perhaps
with the win coming against Green Bay, it was a lot sweeter.
that whole game
that whole first half second half man
you talk about playing sticky going
after the football that was outstanding
offensively listen
that's the way to finish
it out man we're going
to help you we want to help
you we can be better as a staff there okay
but we talked about finishing that game out we were
not getting that ball back that's a hell
of a job man there's a bunch i can give a lot but i'm just
telling you it stuck out it was noticeable
this guy fearless he played balls to the wall when he
got his arms and look these stats don't say much
but it was all over the field gentlemen
thank you to everybody
um in the organization um you know i
had one question on my mind all the
time um and it's you know what
who are we in the eyes of adversity um and that really stuck with
me and so, you know, we showed it
So, yes, I did.
We're one and only in the division, man.
And we got Minnesota to walk in.
You can't ask for any better
We are getting on to Minnesota.
So when you guys come back in the door, we are ready to go.
Break it down.
Hey, if we're going to go, we keep stacking these wins now, boys.
Keep stacking.
Keep that momentum.
What are they?
What are they?
All right, you heard the Lions locker room
guys talking about Minnesota next week.
Vikings are next.
Does Detroit have the momentum they now need to get into this game
and really do something?
Jeff Rieger?
Woody, first time in over a year, they've won two in a row.
You're feeling good, aren't you?
You got to feel good about that, absolutely.
And here's the other thing today about today's game.
I know a lot of people, including myself,
will say the Lions were a tad fortunate considering,
you know, maybe the whistle was with the Lions.
Or the crazy fourth down calls.
Now, the analytics folks say they like that fourth
and one from their own 24.
But I will say this, it felt like the Lions got lucky.
they got one but considering watching the Lions
our entire lives how many times they've been
unlucky I guess you'll take it right I guess you'll take it
so having said all that what is
your biggest concern going into next week
is it turnovers defensive breakdowns or just the idea
that Minnesota's undefeated in this matchup it's
the Brian Flores defense which gave them fits
last season and it gave Graham Glasgow fits last season
and we'll see how Cade Mayes handles it but
The reason that the Lions and Jared Goff and Ben Johnson thrived
against the Flores defense in 23 and 24 was not because any of them.
It was because of Frank Ragnow.
It is the center's job to sift through all of those exotic looks,
all of those pressures, all of those sim blitzes, all of those real
blitzes, and help Jared Goff see where pressure is coming from.
So Cade Mayes is going to have a really, really full plate next Sunday,
which only makes it more important that he played this week
to work out some of those communication
and cadence things with Jared Goff.
So we'll see if the Lions can straighten everything out
and keep going on this track
because it would be great to see this team win three in a row.
All right, guys, I've got to move on.
After quality wins over Boston and Miami,
the Pistons have started 2-0 for the first time since the 2018 season.
And tonight Detroit took that spotless record
into the city of Brotherly Love to battle the 76ers.
Jalen Duren, out of action for at least
two weeks with a strained hamstring.
And Ausar Thompson was also MIA,
but there were plenty of others ready to step up in that duo's absence.
Let's go courtside, gentlemen.
Pick it up in the first quarter.
Detroit up big.
Duncan Robinson misses the three.
Paul Reed gathers that rebound, passes it back to D-Rob for the three.
Pistons up 12 after the first quarter.
Second quarter.
Look at Robinson lob it to John Collins for the jam.
This is pretty.
A few possessions later, Cade Cunningham's shot is blocked,
but he passes it back to a wide-open Collins who drills the three.
John Collins with 16 points in the game, Detroit up 10 at the half.
In the third quarter, the Sixers weren't going away,
but Detroit kept their foot on the gas.
Here's Cade making the corner three.
He finished with a team-high 26.
Fourth quarter, here's Paul Reed with a hook shot
to give the Pistons a nine-point lead.
That's pretty good.
A few possessions later, Cunningham with a huge block on Jalen Brown.
Pistons win it, 106-93.
They are three and oh this season doesn't matter
who our opponent is you know i mean like we want
to outwork people you know that's
our aim every single night we want to play the game in a
selfless way no matter what our opponent
is and I thought again we did that tonight to find
different ways and different different guys
to contribute to it uh to get stops when we needed
to get stops and then execute offensively to get
the shots that we wanted um and just reading their
coverages and their defenses that they changed
them through the night I thought we did a great
job of figuring it out okay back at the brief
for a brief stop at the round table Pistons down three
you know after the win over lebron and the sixes
but the new surrounding jaylen duran is still in
the headlines reevaluated after two weeks
with the right hamstring problem cause for concern yes or
no i don't think so right it's
so early in the season not to mention the pistons are two and zero
oh without Jaylen Duran because he didn't play
a lot of that Miami game but who'd have thought
the gauntlet for the Pistons right Celtics Heat
Sixers they win them all by a combined 38 points
Woody I'm telling you take on the world champs
on Tuesday with the Knicks so I mean they're back
they're just beating teams in regular season
this looks like an early preview of a winning
identity for this team
and it's something that can last will if they keep it up if they keep
shooting like they have so far they can definitely keep this up
and a lot of people were very willing
and maybe even eager to move on from Duncan Robinson
this offseason that is to leave him
to package him in trades
but as Rieger's notes say right here 59 points in his first three games
and shooting over 50 percent from three nicely done he
is reproving his value to this team
in his ability to space the floor
and shoot from outside the arc we're also looking at Cade maybe
dictating the game without forcing it
is that his probably biggest improvement coming into this year
yeah I think so I mean over the first three games
they've won different ways today was really the
first explosion from Kade Cunningham.
He had 26 points, but I feel
he has been more of a floor general the first
two games. And then today he goes off
a little against a really good Philly team that
a lot of people predict to win the East. So
everybody's clicking on all cylinders.
It's nice. It's great to
hear you. Would you say that again?
Everybody's clicking on all cylinders. Not at all, I don't want negativity
No, no, no, I don't want any negativity.
You know, I can't be that guy. 22
points in the opener against the Celtics.
Here's why I don't want the negativity, because I'm getting
a signal to call our first time out of the night.
We'll do that right now.
We'll dive into college football as well as the Red Wings' road woes.
There's some negativity on the other side of the break.
Welcome back.
The Spartans and Wolverines in action on Saturday.
And at the start of the day, there was hope for both teams.
Now, we all saw how it ended in overtime.
Yeah, a little bit for the maize and blue against number six, Indiana.
So, let's begin our college football rewind on the West Coast
as the Michigan State Spartans took on number nine UCLA.
The green and white driving in the opening quarter.
The trouble in the red zone this year have the Spartans.
Kaufman, got a wide open man and a touchdown walk-in.
Kenneth Williams, Michigan State scores first.
Empty backfield on second down and 10.
Cade fires and it's intercepted.
Going out on the sideline.
Take it to Anthony Woods.
Even back loads.
Going deep for the first time.
There were a lot of times today on the headphones,
it was like, just call what we can execute.
Just call what we can execute.
So we've got to tighten things up even more as a coaching staff
to be able to give our guys the best opportunity with the youth
and an experience to play fast and play the Spartan way.
And at times today, I didn't see that.
This is unique.
I've never seen so many injuries, and they've all happened in games.
You know, that's what's so crazy to me.
If it was in practice, you know, I could turn the dials up or down,
you know, left or right.
When they happen in game, I don't have a big solution for that
besides next guy up.
Third and seven to the 23.
Carr underneath.
Third and goal to the one.
They give it.
Hush
over.
You've
got
to be
better
than
that
on
offense.
There's no way around it.
And the three main issues in that football game,
our inability to run the ball,
couldn't get anything going in the run game,
our inability to score touchdowns in the red zone.
You can't win unless you can score touchdowns in the red zone.
And we're minus one in the turnover margin.
We turned it over twice in the first half.
Gave up four sacks on offense.
Three of them were on big third downs.
So that affected our field position.
extremely proud of the way the defense played
that's an elite defense that we have all right
let's get back to the round table for our official review
of the college game and let's start with
Michigan, how cooked are they after the home loss
to the Hoosiers, speaking of that was this me
come on bro go ahead man
to figure out what the worst play call was
it dan campbell going for it fourth and one from his own 24
or was it jason back on third and one
decided to roll out and hit the rhino hit
the rhino yes he couldn't hit the rhino and of course
yeah that car kid died but no listen it is abysmal
and it's sad because the big 10 is wide open
there's no great team in the big 10 none at all
and michigan has this great defense that holds
every team to 20 or under
and they've only won four of those games three of them if you look at
the western true true wild not to mention
the last two coaches in the last 60 years that have started
one and three in the Big Ten. Who are they? You guys want to guess?
From Michigan. Tell us,
Rieger. Brady Hoke is one. Rich
Rodriguez did it twice. They both coached
at Michigan. Not the company you want to keep.
So Kyle Whittingham, and I said this
before and I'll say it again, he gives
me Monty Williams vibes.
He took the job for the money, and
now that he's here, he probably wishes
he hadn't. Well, you know, what's your assessment
on Tommy Carr? Okay, he was, well, he gave
the spark last week. What about coming in this
week? The spark was not there.
It seems that Hoosiers snuffed that spark very quickly.
Yeah, I mean, look, with this defense and even an average offense,
Michigan's probably 7-0
and very much alive in the national contender race.
Instead, they're 4-3 and they're pretty much toast.
I mean, they're actually entirely toast.
And look, we'll see how long Whittingham is here,
but there's no way if this continues
that Jason Beck can return for next season.
And I do know the buyout in his contract is quite high,
but if these numbers continue,
there is no way that Kyle Whittenham can bring him back.
That effort yesterday, especially on the ground, was putrid.
I would go so far as to say it was unconscionable
to rush 42 times for 57 yards with a number
of good athletes on that offense is entirely unacceptable.
And when you can't run the ball consistently, Rieger,
you end up doing stupid things like call passing plays
on a rollout to the Rhino offensive lineman.
And the irony in that is that that was maybe the only drive
of the game where they actually ran the ball semi sort of kind of well.
And then they went away from it and shot themselves in the foot.
So, again, Whittingham will likely be here for at least another year,
but he's going to have to make major changes to his offensive staff
entering next season.
Well, we'll see what happens next week for Michigan.
They are up against Rutgers on the road.
We'll see if they can survive or if they fall flat again.
Hey, let's move to MSU real quick.
Pat Fitzgerald in the postgame talking about we have to simplify.
We have to call what we can execute.
Is that going to mean that the playbook is like now two pages deep?
two plays two plays that's it run pass every now
and then do an rpo no honestly i'm starting to
wonder will pat fitzgerald win a big 10 game
at michigan washington oregon at ruckers it sure is
not looking like it and by the way
when he was in ucla did he look across the field at chesney
who came from james madison
and has ucla with a backup quarterback seven and oh that's a first
year coach speaking of backup quarterback kate kaufman
at quarterback where is uh alessio
Milivojevic. I mean, it's personal reasons,
but this is going on for a while now, and I'm starting
to wonder what the personal reasons are.
Is it because I want to transfer? I don't know. I mean,
as soon as you learn the kid's name and you can say Milivojevic,
he's nowhere to be found. And I
actually think he's been okay for Michigan State.
I just kind of think everybody else has let him
down. Well, you know what?
There's still a lot to talk about for MSU and a lot for that team to
build on. Let's advance the itinerary to the Detroit Red Wings.
This team is currently heading
to edmonton for the monday night matchup with the oilers
but are the losses to the kraken and then
the flames making it hard to see any kind
of progress being made a little bit i think the
best thing to happen to the Wings on this road trip
is Lucas Raymond coming to life he had a
pretty slow start to the season very slow start
and yet you look up and through 10 games he's got
nine points so he's been a valuable point
per game player i still think he has a hundred point
potential in him I think he almost has to get there
for this version of this team to do anything
of note this season so it's good to see that Raymond provides a spark
but on the other hand
Dylan Larkin just isn't
and and frankly a lot of nights he looks like a player who wants out
because guess what guys he wants out he wants out right
and since his season debut when he when he
had the goal and the assists
and there were positive vibes around him he hasn't scored since
and he never went more than six games last season without scoring
a goal eight games right now
without a goal and he's playing almost 22 minutes
a night almost two minutes more than he was playing
last year so it's not for lack of opportunity I know he had
the injury back in training camp but
he just doesn't look like a player who's fully engaged
and I'm not surprised because he wants
to be on a different team. Right. I mean, the only news
coming out about Larkin was the fact that he
expanded his search again to, what, now
10 teams that are out there? Yeah, no Canadian teams.
Right, no Canadian teams. So, I mean,
you know, we're still at square one
with this. I mean, we need Kortokov to make a
move or somebody to make a move.
Korkov wants to swing it out of the park. He wants
a grand slam, and no team's going to give him
a grand slam move because the
wings consider a grand slam move
getting a center that can play right now
back in return, and that's not going to happen.
No, and in the meantime, you've got all these young guys
Trying to find their way
And while it's going
It's not going that well
Just three points out of a playoff spot
You're right, I did say last week
It was wild card
I think it was two last week
So they lost a little ground
But what are we expecting moving forward
From the Red Wings
Edmonton tomorrow night
In this road trip
Maybe come back and start something
Maybe sign Simon Advincenzo
That's what we expect from them moving forward
Why the delay
It's to take care of business
is to act like a grown-up NHL franchise
and pay your top pair defenseman the nine and a half to
ten million dollars that top pair defensemen get in today's NHL.
And if you're not comfortable
doing that, then just move him.
In your assessment, what is the thinking in the room for
the GM, the owner, and all this kind of stuff?
I mean, why isn't this moving forward?
Sounds like the thinking is they don't want
a defenseman to be paid higher than Marc Staal,
who's making eight and a half per year,
but again, he signed that deal two years ago in
a much different salary cap climate.
The cap has grown exponentially since.
You can pay Edvinkvist nine, nine and a half per year,
and he'd be taking up significantly
less percentage of the cap now than Staal was then
when he signed his deal.
So it just doesn't make sense for this to drag out any longer.
And if you sign him, it'll be a bargain
in a couple of years anyway, and you need him.
Of course you're getting him.
Detroit wrapping up this road trip tomorrow against the Oilers.
Time to pause, but the Lions' love continues.
We'll go back to Ford Field after this break.
The NASCAR playoffs in Talladega
for the running of the Yellowwood 500.
Lap 132, Ryan Blaney tries to transition
but makes contact with Bubba Wallace,
resulting in a 12-car wreck.
Oh, no.
Five laps to go.
Joey Logano battling for the lead,
loses control of his car and flips over.
Oh, no, take another look.
He hits the wall hard.
The car had to be flipped over, but he is okay.
Then on the final lap, Kyle Larson.
He'll get passed by Ricky Stenhouse on the inside,
but Larson will eventually make
a move after we look at this wreck for Logano.
Larson will make the move on the inside
on the final turn to get the win.
Get this, Larson used a strong pushing draft to pass seven cars
in the final quarter mile for the checkered flag.
It's Larson's first career win at a super speedway,
expanding his points lead to 73 with two races remaining.

for Lions football over
the last two weeks Lions fans have experienced the gamut of emotions
beginning with the joy after the win over Arizona
then came the concern over the Packers which was
quickly followed by a trip into the depths
of despair thanks to the Sam Laporta situation but
today Detroit put all of that in the rearview mirror
and kept focus on the main thing and for
tonight's Lions look back I'm very happy to hear
our main man Fox 2 sports director and Lions radio
play-by-play voice Dan Miller back
in the broadcast booth we'll pick it up in the opening quarter with
the Packers pushing for points there it
is spot down kick away he missed it he pushed it to the

Has to fall on top of it.
And it is picked up by Green Bay.
Man, just can't do that.
Crowd up and making noise.
Love out of the gun.
Love's got it.
Wants to throw.

That is going to be a first down.

There's the snap to Jarrett on fourth down back.

Hey, welcome back, Ryan Branch, I see you, 32.
Packers trying to tie the game.
43-yarder, and it is straight down the middle and good for Trey Smack,
going for fourth at a yard
and a half from just shy of their own 24-yard line.
Goff with eight on the play clock, moves him behind center.
Jared takes the snap, turns, gives it to Gibbs.
he's taken down for a loss done oh
my goodness Green Bay takes over on downs 35 yard attempt for
the go-ahead field goal from Green Bay hash mark
left side spot down kick on the way it is up and
it is no good he missed it oh
my goodness he missed it he pushed it to the right that is the
second chip shot he's missed today new life
for the lions let's see what they dial up Goff's gonna
work out of the gun Jared's got it tosses it
to Gibbs try to get outside left turns it up at the
10, gives to the 5, and he slides down
with the first down at the 3-yard line.
They can run out the clock from here
and bring Jake Bates on for a chip shot.
Here we go.
To win it, Jake Bates from 22 yards out, hash mark left side.
Snap, spot, kick away.
It is up, and it is good.
The Detroit Lions win it by a score of 20-17.
Jake Bates sends it through on the final play of the game.
that drive to win it by detroit clutch
so the lions come away with a 20 to 17 victory to stack
wins together for the first time in more than
a year that result producing quite a few smiles in
the lions locker room and we definitely saw one
as Jennifer Hammond caught up with Jameson Williams
who talked about his touchdown catch
with offensive tackle Penei Sewell running a route right next to
him Sewell is a spectacular player
so you know he got it he taking defenders with him it was kind of
like a zone so i said no it's actually crazy QB threw me
a no look so i was like wow
and then you know i just got to get in the end zone
from there nobody close to me if i'm
close i'm gonna dive in for sure a lot of people
were expecting a shootout in this one and whereas
there was a lot of offense a lot
of yardage score didn't really indicate that what were you
expecting from this matchup
and how did it play out in your mind uh you know you can expect expect
Like what happened, you know,
gritty football come down to the end of the game.
You know, it's two good football teams going back and forth 60 minutes.
You know, I think that's
the best experience you can get from a game like that,
a shootout come to the last second.
You know, it's the most entertaining thing
you can watch when it comes to the game.
This one felt like a game you guys really needed to have
just with all of the implications of the division.
How much did you talk about that going in,
and how important is it that you got it?
We knew it was a big one for us, you know, first division.
First division game for us.
But, you know, we got the win.
It's behind us.
We got another one next week.
So, you know, that's what we focus on now.
On your first touchdown, I think you took off from the five-yard line.
Yeah.
I got to get in.
I got to get in.
You know, I feel like once I caught it and once I straightened up,
I stayed in bounds.
I seen a straight shot, but on my peripheral,
I seen defenders moving to me.
And once I got close to the end zone,
I just feel like I got to have it.
So, I'm going to jump in for sure.
Jared is sitting right outside of 1,800, 1,800 passing yards,
14 touchdowns, and what can you say about
the type of ball he's playing for six minutes?
It's amazing.
You know, shout out to QB1.
He's doing his thing right now.
We got to keep it on track, you know, keep balling.
You know, it's a long season,
and we just trying to turn this thing over and go on the run.
Thanks a lot to J-Mo and the Hammer.
Now, what about Detroit's defense?
We saw quite a few meaningful contributions
from that side of the football,
and one of the most important came from the hand
of Lions defensive lineman D.J. Wanham
on this blocked Packers field goal.
We'll keep moving through the Lions locker room after this short break.
We heard from the Lions offense after the win over Green Bay,
but what's the perspective from the defensive side of the football?
Jennifer Hammond gets that from Lions defensive lineman D.J. Wanham,
who also got a finger on that field goal attempt
by Trey Smack late in the fourth quarter.
Did you know that it was going to miss when it hit your finger?
Did you have to turn around and make sure?
I didn't know because I phrased it. I'm sorry, I grazed it.
But when I turned around and looked
and it was out, I was best feeling ever.
That was a great feeling.
Was that just lateral?
I mean, how did you get up and get a finger on that?
Because that thing was just off his toe quick.
We just got off the ball.
We knocked the whole line back.
We was doing it the whole game.
And we knew we kind of had them set up for it that last field goal.
And we got off the ball, knocked them
back, and we all got our hands up.
And it hit my...
Was that something you guys saw on tape this week
that you knew you might be able to take advantage of?
and how much did that help you considering that they were so poor
in their field goal strategy?
Yeah, we knew this game was going to come down to the wire,
you know what I'm saying, all throughout the week.
And any edge we could get, we knew that, you know what I'm saying,
we was going to take advantage of it.
And, you know what I'm saying, throughout the week,
we focused on field goal block.
That's a real thing.
We have field goal block plays that we execute.
And all we did was go out, knock the line back, get a hand up,
and get my hand.
So it was good.
This really felt like a game that came down to the defense.
I mean, did you guys expect it to be a defensive struggle like this?
most people were predicting a shootout oh
no i mean i know me personally or the guys in the
locker room we know what we what we have
on defense we know we got the guys um and a lot
of things you know i said we messed up at the beginning
of the season we're starting to execute
better and and and and play to the standard
that we know that we can play at um you know i'm saying
that we just went out there and play play lions
defense football you know what I'm saying we go out
there and execute what chef calls
and that's what happens when we go out there and execute
this really felt like a gotta have it game
and a gotta have it win against a division opponent
in week seven at home yeah how much does it help you guys knowing
that you got it behind you
oh it helps us a lot but you know what I'm saying we still got
to see them again um and we got
other good teams in this conference you know what I'm saying
so each game counts you know what I'm saying
it's always come down to the wire
in this division you know what I'm saying at the end of the
season so you know what I'm saying each and every game counts
and we're gonna continue to stack them
thank you DJ and thank you Jennifer Hammond time
for a little something different and it comes out
of the Lions history books back in 1991 the Lions
were blasting through the regular season competition
on their way to a first-round bye in the playoffs,
then hosting Dallas in the divisional playoff
before eventually falling
in the NFC Championship game against Washington.
Now, the gang at the Lions One Pride Productions,
have put together stories of the 1991 season.
Here's a look at Lions legend number 84, Herman Moore.
It's Barry.
Did I tell you about that?
No, sir.
Oh, yeah, that's part of the accountability.
You all are like this.
That's part of the accountability.
So here it is, you know, we're in, I don't know what year I'm in,
me and Kevin Glover, sixth year, whatever year we were in,
they draft Herman Moore.
So, okay, big receiver.
We like, okay, yeah, we excited about this,
what, 12th pick in the draft, right?
So we go to the first preseason game.
So they throw Herman, I don't know what the route,
I can't call the name of the route,
but basically it was for Herman to run five yards and cut it in.
and the quarterback throwing the ball, and he dropped the ball.
And, like, me and Kevin Glover just kind
of looked at each other like that
real fast, okay?
You know, about two plays later, they called another route for Herman,
and I think this was an out route.
So he ran the out route.
They threw the ball to him.
He dropped it again.
Oh, I met Herman, like, halfway at the hash mark.
Oh, I had some choice words for that young man.
And I'm like, what is going on?
You know, me and Kevin Glover, man.
So we kind of gave him, you know, a piece of my mind.
So the long and short of it, come to find out,
he was fitted with the wrong contact lenses.
That's what had happened.
They had prescribed, I don't know how that happens.
I don't wear contacts.
He got fitted with the right contact lenses.
And as they say, the rest was history.
Herman Moore, one of the greatest receivers to ever play this game.
but he started off slow oh it was real slow oh we
were gonna jack him up we like man we've spent the
12th pick in the draft on you it was tough
my rookie season uh being that it was uh less than
spectacular that i would have accomplished so much
and it all seemed to happen overnight once i ended
realizing you know what you got to be able
to see if you're going to be a wide receiver
and paid attention to that the game that really broke out
for me to make me realize it was there
was actually when Robert Carter got injured against
the Chicago Bears my rookie season and I had to
step in for him and actually perform that was a time
for me where there was no more thinking it
was about performing and I knew that was an opportunity even
though that was short-lived
I had my breakout opportunity against
the Dallas Cowboys touchdown
in the NFL in the corner of the
end zone kind of became my signature mark in terms of going up
and getting high fade and I felt that
that moment I had arrived
and it was now time to start just ascending and going to a different
level. He came out, like I say, big receiver,
big target, man, the best hands that I've ever seen,
hands down. Herman Moore has everything he caught
was out with his hands. The best hands I've ever
seen and probably top five route runners
at the receiver position that I've ever seen, man. It was
just it was amazing he was what we needed
in our offense at that time to kind of balance us out
between the run game with Barry
but having a great receiver out there and that's what made
our offense just go but herman was huge what
a cool story hey we're getting close to the end
but there's still gas left in the tank we'll show off
the NFL play of the day when we come back
time now for the NFL play of the day
and since we're in a good mood it's actually two big time
plays as Giants running backs Cam Scaduto
and Devin Singletary literally carry the Giants to
victory. Look at this overtime effort against
the Houston Texans with the score tied at 21
Head coach John Harbaugh has
the Giants playing good football.
Those two runs going
for a combined 72 yards as the Giants move
to 4-2-1 after a 27-21 overtime victory. And that
brings this Sunday to a close. I'm Woody Woodard.
Thanks for tuning in. We'll rejoin you at 4 a.m.
for Fox 2 News Morning, but TMZ Weekend
is next, right here on Fox 2.
