Jury selection begins today
in Dallas rapper Yella Beezy's capital murder trial.
He is accused of orchestrating a murder
for hire to kill a fellow rapper.
Shannon Murray joins us in studio with a preview of the trial
and why finding an impartial jury might be a challenge.
Shannon.
Brandon, the trial is finally set to begin after a month-long delay.
Yella Beezy, whose real name is Marquise Conway, has pleaded not guilty
and denies any involvement in the murder-for-hire plot.
Prosecutors accused Conway of hiring Kawan White
to kill rival rapper Moe 3 during a 2020 ambush
on I-35 in Dallas following a long-running feud.
White was convicted of the murder last month
and sentenced to life in prison.
An attorney talked to our Stephen Dial last week
on his show Dallas News Live about the challenges of selecting
a jury in Conway's trial after the hitman's conviction.
I think it will be much longer because
the first trial against Mr. White was a long trial that had a lot
of notoriety, a lot of interest, especially right here in North Texas.
And so a number of people are going to know about it.
And again, whether you're the prosecutor
or whether you are the defendant, you always want to start
with a level playing field with a jury coming in with a blank slate,
not coming in with ideas, convictions or agendas.
Earlier this year, a Dallas judge ruled most rap lyrics
by Conway cannot be used against him,
but a handful of songs were approved.
A third defendant, Devin Brown,
will also face trial for capital murder.
As for Conway's trial starting today,
Fox 4 will have cameras inside the courtroom
once the jury is seated and testimony begins,
and we will have continuing coverage on Fox 4 and Fox Local.
