This morning, grief counselors will be on hand at a North Shore high
school to help students who are grieving the loss of a classmate.
A senior at Triton Regional High School was killed just over
the weekend in a wrong-way crash in Revere.
Boston 25 News reporter Alyssa Azar joining us live now along Route 1
with a reaction from school leaders on this tragic news.
Nicole Jean, the school district
is just heartbroken after losing one of its own.
State police tell us that the student
was driving the wrong way here on Route 1
when that vehicle hit another vehicle head-on.
Now, we know the other driver suffered minor injuries
and was taken to the hospital.
This crash happened just south of Sargent Street early Sunday morning.
State police say they received multiple calls about a wrong-way driver
heading south in the northbound lanes.
Minutes later, troopers say
that vehicle collided head-on with another and caught fire.
The student attended Triton Regional High School in Byfield.
In a statement, the school district said,
Our student was highly involved
and connected to many with the Triton community.
Those who knew him saw daily how kind and caring he was to each
and every member of our school community.
It goes on to say they are heartbroken and they are grieving.
Now the crash comes months after State Trooper Kevin Traynor
was killed in a wrong-way crash on Route 1 in Lynnfield back in May.
Weeks later, another state trooper
was injured in a similar crash in Peabody.
Now, MassDOT is set to have a press conference later today
to discuss how to prevent these types of crashes from happening
and exactly what they are doing to prevent them.
