Even a century after his death,
an early Arizona photographer is getting a proper memorial in Mesa.
The Arizona Photography Alliance raised
the money to replace a deteriorating headstone,
and that new grave marker was unveiled at Mesa Cemetery.
Danielle Miller was there.
Good evening, everyone.
We have a group of local photographers
that are really creating something special.
We have Rick here with the Arizona Photography Alliance.
And, Rick, this is so fascinating
that you guys have decided to do something like this.
So we're in a cemetery.
There is a new grave marker for a pioneer photographer.
Pioneer photographer George Rothrock, who photographed here
in Arizona in the late 19th century through the early 20th century.
He photographed monuments. He photographed cultural.
He photographed the indigenous people.
Our organization welcomes makers of photography,
enthusiasts and collectors.
And one of our members, a gentleman named Jeremy Rowe,
Jeremy had the idea that we honor
those photographers that have gravestones
that have become illegible or basically crumbled into history.
What makes this so special for you guys to be able to do this?
When you think about it, photography is not even 200 years old.
And all of us recognize that we stand
on the shoulders of all those photographers.
When you think about photography,
if you're not involved in photography,
you think it's just photographs of stuff.
Well, most photographers are curious and passionate
and photography is what they've chose to understand the world.
So there's such a
connection between those that live
and breathe photography to the work they make. This is such
a great way to honor those who have come before.
Rick, how do we find out more about your organization?
you can go to the website which is arizona photography alliance.org
thank you so much rick we appreciate it
all right guys we will send it back to you
