Good morning folks and welcome back to the channel.
Today we are going to the loneliest
and most isolated fish and chip shop in the world.
That's right, today I've got a 30 hour journey
ahead of me including a 17 hour overnight ferry
to the Shetland Islands. This chippy
is in the absolute middle of nowhere.
Loads of people say well all the food reviews do the same
stuff. Well not today, not today.
We're doing something completely different. Let's go and
Right guys as you can see we are currently outside of
King's Cross station here in London.
The time is currently 9.09 so I started this journey at 6.30
this morning. I had to get the train into London Waterloo
so it's already an hour then I got the
tube across London to King's Cross so we're already two
and a half hours into the journey.
We've got a train to Edinburgh Waverley
and then a train from there to Aberdeen,
which is where we'll be getting the ferry from.
So we're looking for our platform.
Beautiful station.
This is like an incredible station, by the way.
There we go, platform's up.
Platform eight we're going to.
We've got about 12 minutes.
Tap that.
It's open anyway.
9.30 going to Edinburgh,
get there at 1.38 and then we're on to Aberdeen from there.
Hopefully this train is not going to be absolutely jam-packed.
This train is looking pretty busy.
I don't want it to be packed.
The train to Edinburgh is always heaving.
Let's get on.
Looking for seat 83.
Sorry bud.
Let's put this up here.
Can I just squeeze in there please, thank you.
You're not gonna believe this.
In fact, you probably will actually believe this.
We're coming into Edinburgh and we're 45 minutes late.
45 minutes behind, why does this always happen?
I've missed my connecting train to Aberdeen,
which means I might miss the ferry tonight.
It looks highly likely I'm gonna miss it.
I'm gonna have a very small window
to try and get a different connecting train to Aberdeen.
But why does this always happen with UK trains?
They're always late, they're never on time.
This is actually a disaster.
I have missed tonight's ferry to the Shetland Islands
so the train is so late now, here we are
Edinburgh Waverley, the train is so late we're
not going to be able to make it in time to Aberdeen
to get the ferry to the Shetlands. We would get into Aberdeen at 6.28pm
and final boarding on the ferry is 6.30pm
so I'm never going to be able to make it.
In time from the train station to the ferry port
and obviously that train might be a couple of minutes late as well.
So I'm so deflated, I'm so deflated.
Let's see if we can go and speak to someone.
Hello, can I ask you a question?
The next train to Aberdeen gets
into Aberdeen at 6.28 I think.
I'm going to miss my ferry to the Shetland Islands.
What should I do in terms of...
I would speak...
What training are you going to take up?
That's the only option, isn't it?
I think that's...
You're going to go away on the Scott Rail Path 3?
Or the 1528?
Yeah, but it's going to be too late, so I'm not going to...
I know, but I'm just asking what your arrangements are.
Well, ideally now, I would stay here tonight.
Ideally.
You're going to stay now?
And I'll go tomorrow and get the train to Aberdeen tomorrow and then
get there, because there's only one ferry a day to the Shetlands.
I'll go and speak to the DTL and ask them to come out and speak to you.
Okay, thank you.
Do you want luggage?
No, just this.
Right, okay.
Thank you. Thank you, my love.
Thank you very much.
Right, just speaking to this lovely lady. Let's see what happens.
Peace.
Shall I wait here?
All right, thanks.
Hello.
The DTL's just ringing our control.
OK.
So we haven't forgotten about you.
OK.
We'll come out momentarily.
All right, lovely.
Thank you very much.
Cheers.
Thanks for letting me know.
I have been standing out here
so long that the train is now just about to leave, heading
back to London.
So trying to wait here, find out what's going on.
The lady's trying to sort something out for me.
I don't know what.
It's going to happen, but we're going to find out.
Hello, how are you?
I'm just going to organise a taxi to take you up to the ferry port.
How long does it take?
Two hours or something.
You should be there for about 20 to 30 minutes.
Oh my god that'll be amazing, thank you very much, thank you, cheers.
Right folks it looks like they're sorting me out a taxi up to Aberdeen,
it's about two hours which
means we should make it,
I don't know what the traffic will be like but we might make the ferry
after all. Wow this is, I have never heard of this,
I have never had anyone do anything like this for
This for me, like if a train's been late,
getting like a taxi all that way, so.
thank you so much for your help really appreciate
it thank you i'm going to the most isolated
and northerly fish and chip shop in the world
yeah yeah can't beat a good chip what
was your name marie thank you so much robbie
Okay, hi. Thank you so much for doing this.
Has it been booked already?
Our founder will be there as soon as...
Oh, fantastic. Thank you, Karen, for all your help.
You're welcome.
Do you think there'll be traffic,
or do you think it'll get there in time?
Yeah, yeah.
Oh, get up there. Brilliant, thank you.
You ready to go?
Yeah, ready, yeah. Where do we go?
Okay, thank you.
Have you been to this fish and chip shop?
I've been, yeah.
Have you been?
It's really, really good.
I really like it up there.
Yeah.
And my family used to really like it up there,
so we used to go when I was younger.
Not so much now.
Yeah.
Yeah, I've been to it.
It's brilliant.
Oh, I can't wait, honestly.
The stairs take far too long.
Okay.
I used to live in Edinburgh.
Oh, did you?
Five years, many years ago, but yeah.
Do you know what?
I came here for uni.
And I never left.
What uni did you go to?
Queen Margaret University.
That's where I went.
Yeah, brilliant uni.
Yeah, it's a good uni.
I came here and I just never left.
Yeah.
Just never left.
Yeah.
Yeah, it's such a great city, isn't it?
It really is.
I'm just slightly outside of now
because I think the hustle and bustle
that I've kind of got over there.
Yeah.
Yeah, you get the best of both worlds.
Is this my taxi?
I think so.
I'll just pass that over to you.
What was your name?
Douglas.
Mate thank you so much really appreciate it you've all been amazing.
Did you try? Yeah you're absolutely fantastic thank you so much.
Really appreciate it. I really hope you get there.
Right me too. Cheers buddy thank you. Hello mate.
Just Aberdeen ferry port please.
Is this a big fare for you? What is it two hours?
Wow. No three hours. Three hours is it?
Will we make it for uh so the final boarding for the ferry is
It's 6.30pm, do you think we'll make it for half six?
Yeah if it's three hours that I'd get us in for six
or just before six. It's currently 2.54 so it
looks like we might make this.
Obviously I don't know what the traffic's like between here and
Aberdeen but if we can get there for six mate that would be amazing.
How much was the fare mate? Are
you allowed to tell me? You're not allowed to tell?
So essentially for yourself it's a six hour round trip
Oh, thank you for taking the job.
Really appreciate it, mate.
What was your name, Andrew?
Andrew.
Thanks, mate.
I'm Robbie.
Nice to meet you, mate.
So this bridge here is just for taxis, taxis and buses.
Wow, incredible.
Look, look at this bridge.
There's no other traffic on this bridge at all.
Not a single taxi.
That's stunning views.
Have you seen this?
Look at these views.
Scotland is absolutely beautiful.
We've got a traffic light on the bridge
that has absolutely zero traffic.
Hopefully we don't have to wait here too long. We don't have much time.
Time check. We're in Aberdeen. It's 5.48.
We've got 40 minutes and Andrew took a quicker route
for me even though it was longer geographically
which meant more petrol. So I'm gonna give
Andrew just 20 quid to say thank you.
That blue sign over there. Ferry to Orkney and the Shetlands, yes.
We got it. Thank you so much.
Can i drop off just there? Oh brilliant, thank you.
Thank you very much Andrew, lovely to chat to you as
well. Have you got a card machine i can pop 20 quid
on just to say thank you as well?
You've got a long journey back as well mate so.
So, here's the machine.
You've done brilliantly there mate.
Right mate, all the best, safe journey back.
Thank you. Thanks buddy, right yeah hopefully it's not too choppy.
Cheers mate, thanks a lot, bye now.
Bye now.
Cheers. We made it.
Northlink ferries, 5.52, made it with 38 minutes to spare.
Hello, checking in for the ferry.
What's your name?
Robbie Thompson.
Is it all full today, the ferry?
No, no, no.
Yeah?
Oh, good.
A lot of it will do.
Yeah?
Oh, I thought I'd just got like the last room
when I booked it, but maybe there's...
People.
Yeah?
Oh, brilliant.
Okay, lovely.
Okay, thank you very much.
Cheers, thank you.
You've got to say, massive shout out to the LNER massive,
Marie, Karen and Douglas.
They went above and beyond with that. Thank you so much.
Hello, mate. Thank you very much.
You are in cabin 205. It's the beginning of that corridor.
205, yeah? This corridor here?
Shall I go straight to my room now?
Shall I go straight to my room now?
You can go wherever you want.
Yeah? Okay. Lovely. Thank you. Cheers.
Cabin 205.
Look at this. Right, let's go in the room first.
First look at the room. Let's go in. Got two beds.
Two single beds. Wow! We've got a window. Look at this.
Got a telly. This is decent. Little kettle
here. I like the tartan. Little tartan design.
Right, bathroom. Shower. Toilet. Sink.
Yes, folks. What do you think? I think this is decent. Two single beds.
We've got the nice tartan kind of design. We've got the bathroom.
We've got the tea and coffee area. I think this is good.
So in terms of price, I'm going to tell you how much this cost.
So there's three different prices with three different options.
The ferry itself is about 30 quid, 35 quid I think it was.
You can either stay on a reclining chair which is about £3.50,
so think like a plane seat,
or you can have like a fully flat lie down
chair slash bed which is 30 odd pounds,
but that's in a public space. And then you can get one of these rooms,
there's different room options, but this was about 120 quid.
So I think...
That's not bad, it's something a little bit different.
I'm super excited to go and explore
the ship. I've heard the food is actually rather good here.
So we're going to go and check it out,
get something to eat. I have not eaten all day.
Then we're going to go and explore. Let's go.
Let's have a look.
So we've got the bar area here, got the football on. I am starving.
People are already getting food. Hello. What's the chef special today?
Oh, there it is.
Okay, we've got Orkney meatballs, lovely.
Oh, the fish, that looks decent.
The fish and chips.
I'm not going to get that.
What do you have with your fish and chips?
Tartar sauce.
Pot of tea, got to be a pot of tea.
Yeah.
What would you recommend tonight then?
I think the steak pie, do you think?
I haven't eaten all day.
Yeah.
I'll get the steak pie with the mash and the veg, please.
Yeah.
Yeah, please.
Is that okay?
Okay, thank you.
That looks good. Thank you. That'll be lovely.
Yeah, what's this? Is that cauliflower cheese?
Oh, is that macaroni? Can I try it, please?
Thank you. That looks great. Thank you very
much. I'll grab that and I'll grab a drink as well, please.
Two secs. Get the iron brew.
That's it, thanks. That looks quite wholesome
and filling. And that was...
£12.99, I got a little bit of the macaroni cheese to try,
that was £1.99, and the iron brew £3.45.
Nice big chunks of meat there, that's delicious, that's very good.
Obviously, not a massive fan of, you know, just
a puff pastry plopped on top, under normal circumstances for a pie,
but we are on a ferry here, but it's not a proper pie, is it?
And they are charging proper prices, but that steak.
Very soft, nice sauce.
Lovely and rich. £12.99.
Could be cheaper, could be more expensive, let's face it.
It's going to fill a hole, and that's the main thing.
Did you make that?
No, I'm afraid not.
Oh, the filling was really nice.
And you were right, I am full now. Spot on. Thank you.
Yo, we're moving!
This is awesome. I can't wait, I've never been to Shetland before.
No?
No.
I've stayed in Shetland all my life.
Yeah? Oh, you're from Shetland?
Yeah, yeah.
What's it like living on Shetland then?
I don't know.
Well, I'm 80 now, so I've been there all my life.
You've been there all your life?
Yeah, all my life.
Does it get cold winters?
Not really, it's usually wet then.
Yeah.
Yeah, just wind.
Just wind, that's it.
You just have to get used to it.
That's it, yeah.
Oh, this is amazing.
Look at this.
Right, see you later, Aberdeen.
Lovely to meet you.
What was your name?
Alec.
Alec, Robbie.
Nice to meet you, mate.
All the best.
Might bump into you later.
There you go.
Nice chatting to a proper...
Shetland resident there, Alec, good advice.
He said, if you're getting seasick,
just get your head down.
I'm beat, absolutely beat.
I'm gonna chill, watch a movie.
I'll see you in the morning.
Good morning, folks, and welcome to a very rainy,
slightly miserable Shetland Islands.
The time is 8.24 a.m., and I had a good night's sleep.
It was a bit rocky, but I got a good six, seven-hour sleep,
so I am happy, but the weather, not so great.
So we're just heading to the capital Lerwick,
which is about a 15 minute walk. It is raining,
I have got an umbrella, I'm going to put that up in a minute.
The chippy is not in Lerwick,
of course it's not, that would be far too easy,
it's in a town called Bray. Right we're coming
down into the town centre now, look at this!
Oh wow, they've got the bunting up and look at this,
oh this is so picturesque.
There we go, look at that, look at this for an old bar.
The Fuel Bar. Old Scottish aesthetic. Love that.
New Harbour Cafe. Let's see if this is open.
Here we go. New Harbour Cafe.
What's good in here?
Everything. Yeah? Everything?
What's that? What's it called? Sassanet.
Sassanet? Sassanet.
I've never heard of that. It's like a lawn sausage.
It's kind of like, it's honestly, it's spiced.
Ooh, I'll have to try that.
Seasoned, Sassanet.
Yeah, I'll get that.
Do you have that with an egg?
Yes, Sassamet egg.
So you've lived here all your life or?
No, come on.
Yeah, for years.
Okay, yeah.
Sassamet.
Sassamet egg roll.
I'll get one of those.
With an egg, do you think?
Yeah.
Yeah?
Yeah, I'll get one of those please, thank you, a cup of tea please,
lovely, oh, oh it's like that is it, oh we've got a knife
and fork here, I don't mind it like more well done.
She's quite renowned for giving us soft eggs.
I honestly don't mind, but a little bit more well done is good.
Let's go from the front to the back.
What would you like in your tea? Just milk, that's it, thanks.
Thanks.
Lovely, just pop the change in the tip jar, thank you very much.
Sassamette with egg roll, this looks lovely,
oh there we go, look at that, oh and it's like
more a little bit spiced than a normal lawn sausage,
I think you were saying isn't it?
Is it just a bit of maize?
Have we got some bone sauce here?
Jill's saying you have to have a bite without the sauce.
I think she's right as well.
But we might have to put sauce on afterwards, right?
Let's go in for this.
This is going to go everywhere.
I love the fact they've given me a knife and fork as well,
because it's going to go everywhere.
Look at that for a cross section.
That's the egg, oh, this is delicious, honestly.
Try it with a little, little bit of sauce.
Just a little bit.
Right, thank you so much, lovely to meet you both.
All the best.
Thanks Aileen, thanks Jill.
All the best, have a lovely day.
Thank you very much.
Lovely, lovely ladies.
I've got so many great tips there.
It's lovely speaking to the locals, getting the local knowledge.
That bap was delicious.
We're gonna get the bus to Frankie's.
We're nearly there.
Right guys, I am actually having an absolute nightmare here.
My umbrella's completely collapsed.
I had to chuck it in the bin
and I've been to the department store,
I've been to the sport shops,
I've been to Boots, the pharmacies,
nowhere does a big umbrella.
like a proper umbrella
so i'm gonna have to go back and buy a little one
but the same thing might happen that might just collapse
as well it's really windy it's now
absolutely chucking it down all right i've got
a new umbrella they only had the little ones oh my
god guys this is mad please
do hit that subscribe button
because this is a lot of effort for one
Fish and chip review, oh my god!
Here's the bus, this is it, number 23.
Hello buddy, I'm just going to Bray.
Is it best to get a return or can I get two singles?
So yeah two pound please. Is it best with cards?
Card alright? Card or cash.
Card would be great thank you very much. It's late on there. Thank you.
Thank you, there you go.
Lovely thanks very much cheers. I mean this is
seriously remote there is nothing up here at all
but the scenery you probably can't see that much.
The scenery is absolutely stunning,
a couple of houses here but it's very remote.
This is mad, there's a fish and chip shop all the way up here.
The weather is coming in really bad now, it is absolutely
pouring it down and what I'm worried about
is this big storm is coming in tonight, storm Austin,
Met Office issues danger to life warning, a storm Austin approaches,
so I'm a bit worried about the ferry if I'm being honest because
it was already choppy last night and there was no bad weather
and i have seen a few horror videos
on the ferry when there's been storms
a little bit worried about that guys 70% of people watching my
videos and not subscribed
so if you could do me a massive favor if you could hit that subscribe
button if you're not subscribed would mean a lot
and thank you so much we're nearly there
Hello mate, I'm going to Frankie's Fish and Chips,
what's the best stop to get off?
There's a stop right there.
Oh brilliant, thank you.
Cheers.
Have you had this fish and chips before?
Oh absolutely.
Is it good?
Yes.
What's good to get?
Just the haddock?
I always get the panko breaded smoked haddock.
Ooh, that sounds good.
I think this is it.
This is it.
This is it!
We made it!
Brilliant.
Oh, you actually stop here?
It's just passed here, but there you go.
Oh, I really appreciate it.
What was your name?
Jez.
Jez, nice to meet you.
Robbie, thanks a lot.
Cheers, all the best.
Bye.
Oh, look at this.
Look at this.
This is what a setting for a fish and chip shop.
That's crazy.
I don't think it's open yet.
Another 10, 15 minutes maybe.
Look at this setting.
Lovely driver there, Jez.
Guys, we finally made it to Frankie's Fish and Chips,
Britain's most northerly...
Fish and chip shop. You were here, Bray Shetland.
There we go. That's how far away it is from the mainland.
There. What time is it? I don't think it's open.
It doesn't open till 12. We've got to wait 17 minutes.
Right, now it's not open. Oh, you're opening early for me?
Yeah. Oh, thank you mate. I appreciate it. I've
come all the way from London. All right.
Just to try the fish and chips. Came all the way up 30 hours.
I heard your fish and chips is good.
Yeah, I hope you're not disappointed in that one.
I'm sure it'll be good, I'm sure it'll be good.
They're doing it in London in two weeks.
No, no, I'm the manager.
Alright, how long have you been here?
I was here when we won it in 2015.
So you won the National Fish and Chips Awards.
So do you get busy up here?
Yeah, this is...
Thank you for opening a little bit early.
I was drowning.
Tone in.
Oh, this is a nice shop.
I heard you do local seafood as well.
Yeah, we've got muscles in the scallops on the menu.
Yeah, I'll definitely be trying some of that.
Right, we're going to sit here.
Lovely. The haddock and chips.
I'll get it battered if that's okay, if you don't mind.
And then I'm going to get the mussels, just a single pot without chips.
What should I go for?
What's good? It depends what you're into. I mean, that's quite spicy.
That's beautiful, blue cheese and bacon.
That sounds naughty, blue cheese and bacon.
I'll get the Shetland's honey and chilli with that one
and then the pan-fried scallops as well please
in the garlic butter, parsley and lemon.
It's a lot, I know it's a lot of food
but I came all this way so and I'll get just a can
of iron brew would be great
or any you know bottle of iron brew whatever you've got.
What have you got?
Chips, French chips.
Yeah, chicken chips.
They look great, thank you.
Wow, thank you.
Look at how this looks.
There's the scallops.
Ooh, scallops? Scallops.
Oh, fantastic. Thank you very much.
Oh, they look great.
Firstly, look at these mussels.
Smells phenomenal.
Put that back on.
Look at the fish and chips.
Oh my days. Come on.
That looks so good.
Let's start with the scallops.
Five.
Massive scallops and
these are local, big, thick.
Oh my God, coral left on here.
I'll take it off for you.
They are some of the best scallops I've ever had.
So juicy,
buttery.
Come back to the scallops later.
I mean, there's only two left.
Just demolished three of them.
These mussels smell incredible.
Look at that, so many of them here as well.
They're beautiful.
Again, these have a lovely sweetness.
They're delicious.
Absolutely delicious.
This is what we've all been waiting for.
The fish and chips with the mushy peas.
Put them to one side.
Tartar sauce.
Let's get some salt and vinegar.
Vinegar first.
Loads of vinegar.
Salt so that it sticks to the chips.
Mushy peas look good.
Let's just try these.
Nice, big, generous portion.
I like the way they're not fully mushed.
There's a nice bite to them, al dente mushy peas, it works.
Oops.
Let's try a couple of chips in the homemade tartar sauce.
Here we go,
beautiful creamy tartar sauce.
Wow, that tartar sauce is delicious.
Get the lemon on, here we go.
That batter just flakes, look at that.
Very flaky batter,
looks nice and glistening white.
That is genuinely like the lightest batter I think I've ever had.
Look at that batter and the fish glistening.
The batter's got a very light colour as well.
It's almost like tempura-like batter.
We've come all this way, but you've got to do an honest review.
If it wasn't great, I'd say it's not great.
This is a beautiful fish and chips.
I was not expecting it to be so good.
I would say it was a little bit pricey in here, a little bit.
I've got to be honest.
But they're stuck out here in the middle of nowhere.
This was well worth travelling for. Wow.
It's £56.60.
Can I pay with cash?
Yes, sir.
Thank you.
There's £70. Just take that. Keep the change pocket in the jar.
Yeah, of course. Yeah. Thank you.
Right, guys, that was Frankie's Fish and Chips here in the Shetland.
We completed the mission. Get up there. Come on.
I had a great time. 30 hours to get there.
Here's the bill.
It's already falling apart in the rain.
56.50, 18 pound for the fish and chips.
They were fantastic.
The scallops were 20 pound 50.
They were the best scallops I've ever had.
And the mussels, 13, two drinks, four pound 50.
Gave the girls a little tip there as well
for the lovely service and opening up early for me.
Little tiny bit on the pricey side,
but I'm still giving it a 10 out of 10
because it was phenomenal, fresh, local.
Now there's only one thing left to do.
I need to try and get home.
Look at this for a view.
