Deadly mass shooting in Elizabeth, NJ | What we know

Let's go right out to Jersey. Jessica Formoso, she is in Elizabeth, the scene of a deadly shooting. Jessica, did this shooting happen at a vigil? So there was a vigil where people come together to remember a loved one, and then there was a shooting at that vigil. Is that right? Good morning, Dan. So we've been speaking with neighbors here because we've been trying to contact the Union Prosecutor's Office, who's now leading this investigation. We were referred to them. So we've been in contact trying to get more information as to what exactly unfolded here last night. We're still waiting to hear back from them. But in the meantime, of course, we came out here and we're doing our own investigation. We've been speaking with neighbors who tell us that at the time of the shooting last night, there was a vigil taking place across the street. There were a couple of people here. It wasn't a big gathering. According to neighbors, there was there were children, adults. they describe as being a female so it's not some uh new vigil we did notice the candles out there with the photo of the and according to them the shooting took place right now unclear though if those who were here for the vigil were the intended target or not we're still trying to get that confirmed but yes it did happen at the same time the vigil was taking place here Jessica, your audio is just breaking up a little bit there. I think we caught the main gist of it. Do we have any sound from Jessica? We do, right? Okay, so I know you were out there this morning, Jessica. I know you were talking to people who kind of confirmed a little bit of what you were talking about. I mean, but the bottom line is one person is dead, several others wounded. The police were out there all morning, this gunfire erupting into this crowd, trying to determine who opened fire and why. um let's listen to uh some of those interviews that you did um just just a little bit a little while ago it's quiet around here it's pretty decent around here i was definitely not expecting this it's just out of norm i've been here for going on a year and i lived in elizabeth for over 10 i never heard this before so you hear me like really randomly but to be close to home a little scary yeah one of those like crowded it was literally just a few guys uh some woman and a bunch of kids and you said they come every year and do this uh yeah that's what some people said it was like every year they come and they like grieve for the person that passed away and that's kind of what he's talking about you heard the young yeah you heard the young man there he's referring to the vigil that was taking place here last night he believes that this was a drive-by shooting. We're still waiting to confirm that. But he says that he heard a car that sped off right after the gunshot. And that woman we spoke to said that she heard at least 20 gunshots, one after another. So let's walk you back to what happened here. So it was just after 9:30, around 9:40 last night, when gunshots were fired here on Elmwood Place and Irvington Avenue here in Elizabeth, police telling us that they've been out here all morning and all night investigating. This spanned from all the way a few blocks up Irvington Avenue and police wrapped up their investigation about two hours ago. Although after they left, we did see officers come back to the scene, knocking on some doors. This house here behind me, they went inside this house because we did see a bullet hole in a window on the side of this home. So they were investigating with their flashlights and dusting off the window there. Same thing with a couple of vehicles that were parked out here. We saw bullet holes as well. We do know from the initial reports that came in, so from the police scanners that we were listening to last night, four were shot, one person is dead. We are trying to figure out what led to this shooting, to this mass shooting. How many people police are looking for? How many suspects are out there? Was there more than one shooter at the time. Then we had Skyfox over the scene at a different location in Newark. So follow me here. So this happens in Elizabeth. And then right after that, we get reports that police were in Newark investigating a burnt out vehicle that happened to be a red car that they were investigating there. You see the officers. I don't know if you're showing that video, but Skyfox. Yeah, we can see the video. And they're on the ground as well. taking a look. And Jessica, just to kind of wrap it up, this is still very much an open investigation, right? It is an open investigation. And right now, we know, too, that initial reports indicated that police were looking for a driver who fled the scene here in Elizabeth. It happened to be in a red four-door sedan. So we're trying to figure out if the scene in Newark is connected to the shooting here in Elizabeth. But right now the investigation is ongoing and we're hoping to get more information from the Union County Prosecutor's Office at some point today. Usually they send out a press release or call a press conference and there is when we're going to learn the details as to who was involved, how many shooters, and what happened here last night. But this is obviously still an ongoing investigation and we do know that there's still people at the hospital at this time. All right, Jessica Formoso, thank you very much.
