The Battle of Plataea (479 BC): How Greece Destroyed Persia’s Final Invasion | Ancient History

August, 479 BCE. Near Plataea, Greece.
One year after Thermopylae. Weeks after Salamis.
The Persian Empire was making one final attempt to conquer mainland Greece.
On the plain below Plataea stood Mardonius, commanding the largest Persian force still operating in Europe.
Infantry. Archers. Cavalry. And Greek allies who continued to fight for the Persian Empire.
Ancient sources give very different numbers, but the Persian army may have numbered well over 100,000 men.
Facing them was the largest Greek coalition ever assembled on land.
Spartans. Athenians. Corinthians. Tegeans. And warriors from dozens of Greek city-states.
They had come together because the stakes were greater than any single city.
If the Greeks were defeated, the Persian invasion could finally succeed.
But before the main battle even began, the Greek army was already under enormous pressure.
Persian cavalry dominated the open ground.
Greek supply lines were becoming increasingly difficult to maintain.
Access to water was threatened.
And the alliance itself was beginning to crack under the pressure of an enemy that seemed to control the battlefield.
The Greeks were trapped on difficult ground, trying to hold their position while the Persian army waited for an opportunity.
