He emphasizes Canada's strong fiscal position within the G7 and confirms readiness to negotiate a trade deal that serves Canadian interests, while reaffirming a commitment to protecting workers at Stelco.
Next question.
Hi there, Kate McKenna from CBC News.
This question is for the Prime Minister.
What expectations can you give Canadians about
when trade talks with the U.S. might resume?
Could it happen before the new January 1st auto tariff,
additional auto tariff deadline?
And what's the fiscal sustainability
of continuing to bail out industry?
Let me start with the second part of that question.
We have the strongest fiscal position in the G7.
And we have arguably the strongest fiscal position of any major,
certainly of any major economy, member of the OECD.
That will be absolutely clear on November 5th
when we release the budget.
And why do we have the strongest fiscal position in the G7?
It's been work over previous years.
It's hard work of Canadians, and the credit goes to the Canadian people
and the fact that Canadian people expect that of their government.
But you will see tough decisions that this government has taken.
last year's budget. This upcoming budget, I won't preview the budget,
but just keep in mind that the growth of program spending
was running at 8% a year for almost a decade. We brought it down to 2%.
We're very clear about how we use our scarce fiscal
taxpayer dollars. That's what they are, taxpayer dollars.
And that is a focus on affordability and growing this economy.
Capital investment is going to grow
this economy. What you're seeing today is
The province of Ontario is also disciplined.
We've got the ministers of finance
standing right here, also disciplined,
but a focus on where they're going to use their resources,
where we're going to use our resources.
It's in those industries where the businesses are going to invest
for the future, preserve jobs, but also grow jobs for the future.
And that's the discipline.
The first part of your question was around when we'll look.
I spoke to President Trump this morning.
for quite some time.
As I said in my remarks, we're ready to sit down and negotiate when
the U.S. is, but a deal that's in the interest of Canadians.
And you see very much in what
we're talking about today,
some of the most important sectors that would have to be part
of that deal.
I will address my second question to the Prime Minister as well.
What did you and the President
discuss this morning?
We discussed a wide range of things,
a wide range of issues, the situation in Iran.
We talked a few days ago about Ukraine
and those aspects there.
We talked about other aspects in the Middle East,
and we did address some of the issues
around trade.
First of all, in French, I would like to emphasize
that I love all Canadians and all Canadians.
Yes, especially Quebecers and Quebecers,
but all Canadians at the same time.
En ce qui concerne la conversation
avec le Président Trump sur les guerres au Moyen-Orient,
les guerres en Ukraine et les relations économiques canada-américaines.
Next question.
Bonjour, Juliane Lapointe, Radio-Canada.
Et j'aimerais entendre M. Ford, too, if he can tell us in English,
of course, unless you want to try in French.
But if you think the federal government should sue,
there should be, you know, consequences on the Stelco file.
On verra, en ce qui concerne si le PDG
de Stelco est de la bonne foi, on verra.
Il y a des engagements, des engagements très
clairs pendant l'acquisition de Stelco.
These commitments still exist, they still remain, and yes,
of course, it's obvious, we have the rights and the obligation,
the obligation, yes, to protect the workers,
the workers of Stelco, and we will, we will do it.
Be clear, we will do it.
Pardon?
Of course, yes.
Well, again, as I mentioned before, I support the actions
that the Prime Minister and the Minister are taking.
We support them 1,000%.
We both agree that our number one priority are the hardworking women
and men that work in the steel sector,
and we'll do whatever it takes to protect their jobs
and grow opportunities within the steel sector.
