Russia and Ukraine have begun a regional ceasefire
in the Russian-occupied town of
Oleshky.
Both sides have said this Tuesday the deal
is supposed to allow for humanitarian aid
to reach civilians trapped in the town,
which lies on the eastern bank of the Dnipro, just
opposite the Ukrainian-held city of Kherson.
Strikes are continuing elsewhere, though,
including on the capital Kyiv, where the southern
bridge and subway infrastructure were hit this Tuesday.
Earlier, I spoke to our correspondent in Ukraine,
Emmanuelle Chaz, and asked her whether that
ceasefire is holding according
to ukrainian authorities it has started at 3 a.m and
according to the uh ombudsman of human rights
of ukraine Mytro Lubinets there's uh observance of
that ceasefire by the ukrainian side for now
so uh the the goal of this ceasefire is first to
to install in the area enough calm, enough, you know,
safety for humanitarian teams to operate in two times.
And that is all very hypothetical so far.
But first, the goal is to bring
into Oleshky humanitarian aid to some 1,700 people,
according to the United Nations, who are still trapped in the city.
This includes children who are still in that town,
which pre-war had a population of 24,000 people.
And once humanitarian aid will have reached those people
who have been deprived of food, of drinking water, of electricity,
of medicine for months now, there should be a stage of evacuations.
And as I was mentioning, this is all hypothetical because
this will all depend on whether or not this ceasefire will be observed.
And of course, there's
also a lot of uncertainty as to where exactly people will be evacuated.
Will they be evacuated towards Russian occupied territory
and then to the Russian territory?
Will they be evacuated into Ukrainian territory directly?
We don't have those answers now.
