Success isn't built in the spotlight, it's built in silence,
in the moments no one else will ever
know about. What people see is just the tip of the iceberg,
but what they don't see is where
the real story lies. It's not just about showing up
when everyone's watching, it's the grind in
the dark, the hours spent mastering the smallest details,
and the discipline to keep going even
when it feels pointless.
So put in the work when no one's looking, because that's what separates
those who want it from those who make it happen
and there's a saying that goes no man is free who
is not a master of himself ten thousand men can stand against him
in the battlefield can burn
but as long as the warrior commands himself
no army on earth can conquer him and you are no
different the comfort the cravings the excuses none
of them rule you unless you let them so
command yourself because the man
who rules himself can never be ruled by anyone else.
I don't know if I trust somebody who's never had it hard.
And I don't say that because I
wish struggle on anybody
or I think my heart is harder than anybody else's.
There's just things in this life you cannot learn
if everything's been handed to you.
There's humility in struggle.
Your entitlement is gone because you realize you could do everything
right and it could still go wrong.
You appreciate your work and you find out you're not as in
control as you thought you were.
See having it hard doesn't make you a better person but it helps
you understand when somebody else is going through it
and when you've been the one that needed a hand
you think twice before pointing a finger.
In order to become the better version of yourself
you literally have to kill off your original version
because if it lingers around it's going
to find you again and that's the thing people don't understand.
They're like I'm looking for
the better version of myself
but in order to have the better version of yourself you have to have a
funeral for your old version otherwise that old version
is going to rise back into you and pull
and try to pull you back if you don't exercise
or or or draw out the potential in yourself
you are going to feel depressed you're going to feel anxious
because you know in your heart that
you are leaving everything that you could potentially
do and potentially become on the
table. You cannot break someone
who finds growth in everything that is sent to defeat them. You
cannot break someone who finds growth in everything
that is sent to defeat them. You can choose to
adopt that mindset, the unbreakable one.
One day you'll realize the thing that changed your life
was not motivation it was a decision
and a man who finally meant it
failure, hell, disappointment
discomfort is a great learning tool
and many people don't understand that you you know you
got to take ownership of what's going on in your life
and you're not where you want to be and you
say it's because the boss doesn't like you
or it's because the girl treated you this way or
the guy did this like all those things you got
to take ownership of and if you're blaming
all these other external things you're not going to make any changes
and that's going to be a
problem wishing says to your mind you haven't got a prayer
but you might as well wish so when you
say to the mind I wish I could it says yeah me too get over it
when other people break and give
up and stop I just don't right
and it comes down to the story you tell yourself about yourself
change is really hard I don't think people realize how hard it
is because often when they
think of change they think about making positive changes
and so you say to people well obviously
making that change would would improve your life
so why is it so hard to do and the reason is
because first of all change is hard
because change involves loss so even though you might be moving
to something better what you do lose is you lose
the familiar you lose your comfort zone and a lot
of us are very worried about going into a place
of uncertainty a place that we haven't been before
So some of us, like sort of human nature,
would rather stay in the familiar place, even if the familiar
is miserable or unpleasant, than to say, I'm going to risk something
and go to this place that makes me really uncomfortable.
They can't tolerate the discomfort of the uncertainty.
The things I do in life, most of life, you're alone.
You may have a whole support crew around you,
but up here, you're alone.
most of the stuff I do I'm training for that one those moments
when you start to dive back in the
cellar of your mind and you're pulling out all
these all these tactics all these mental tactics
to get through this and no one's
coming to save you and you get
through that going into the
darkness I think everybody is motivated
by two different things one you have the beautiful things
in your life the things that are going well
the things that you're grateful for the things you're
moving towards instead of away you have
a compelling vision of your future. It's something
that you're very excited about.
Now the flip side of that equation are the things that people that
doubt you. It's haters. It's things you're moving away from.
It's fear-based things. It's something
that you absolutely refuse to let happen.
One that is incredibly potent to me are the people that
want to see me fail and I find in very acute moments
the darkness serves you better. Every
thought you think and every word you say forms a blueprint
and your mind must work to make that
blueprint real. Only execution matters.
Burn that into your nervous system. Do whatever you need to
do to remind yourself, only execution matters.
When you're working on something you want to
achieve, you have got to stand up to that voice.
You've got to sell yourself every day on your
abilities, on what you're doing, on the goal that you want to reach.
You've got to sell yourself
every day, every day, every day.
According to your level of belief, it will manifest itself
and what you're doing.
The worst thing in life that happens to a man
is it gets symbolized.
Because you lose the hunger for life.
You think you've arrived.
And once you have an I've arrived mentality,
that's my biggest fear.
As I get to the point where I'm at that point
where life has come to me
and I have that feeling of I've arrived.
I now know my life for what I know it to be is over.
I cracked
the code to shoot
me the potential
in myself.
So it's that quiet place.
It's that place by yourself.
It's just hours and years and decades by yourself in the grip of life.
The life has you by the throat and choking you out.
And you're sitting there calm because you're trying to figure it out.
You're not panicking.
You're not quitting.
You're not throwing the towel.
You're saying, there's a way.
Thinking about it, feeling good about it,
those are awesome.
But if you have a vision of something you're trying to do,
become whatever, and you don't execute against it,
I don't need you to want to build a big business.
What are you doing?
how do you define it? What are your deliverables?
What are the metrics by which you're judging
yourself? And by the way, if you don't want a grand goal,
you don't need one. But then say,
what I'm trying to do is get centered.
I'm trying to experience happiness. Even that,
you can begin to look at ways that you can improve that.
Whatever we have right now,
whatever we're demonstrating in our lives
is a result of what we believe subconsciously that
we deserve. And part of increasing that belief level
is that you have got to convince yourself
every day. You can learn all the techniques in the world.
If you don't believe in yourself,
it won't happen for you.
Right now, between me and the person I want to be, between you
and the person you want to be,
there is a gap of skill set and that's it. But once you know
your mission and once you believe
that you can accomplish anything you set your mind to,
then you can do the extraordinary.
The thing that people misunderstand about success is
they're looking for the easiest way to get there.
When everybody goes five easy steps,
10 steps to greatness,
those steps for success are infinite.
Infinite.
You cannot
count them.
It doesn't matter how long you've been doing it.
Those steps are constantly shifting.
You don't know if they're there.
Sometimes you have to trust
that the next step is going to be there
when you can't even see it.
And sometimes when you step on that step,
you go right into quicksand.
But you got to be able to pull yourself
back out of it again.
So everybody's looking for these steps, and there are no steps.
Those steps never, never end.
And you just can't climb steps.
Sometimes you've got to crawl up those steps,
and you finally get to the top, and everything shifts.
It's not about external validation.
It's about your relationship to yourself.
And you know when your head hits the pillow at night
and when you wake up in the morning what that relationship looks like.
And if that's missing something, and perhaps that's a little nudge
or a call to action that you need to change things up a little bit.
it's always going to be the sticking point
and a lot of people like i see you know they'll quit
because it got hard or just
because something isn't coming to them right away they'll let up
a little bit kobe he's known for saying something
that was quite profound he said you have to
jumping on what you love what you do every day you have
to love what you do every day because
those days that are hard those days that suck
that's where the magic is you go do it and you
get your work in anyway,
because that's where you're going to find out who you are. That's
where things are going to continue to happen.
And you have to just love putting in the daily work
because that's another token in the bank, if you will,
showing up, you know, striving towards your
goal. When people get the challenge, it's like,
stop, you know, it's not just going to come to
you. There's, but you have to just stick with it.
You have to, you have to really, really believe
in what you're doing and you have to have faith
that it's going to work out, but you got to keep
putting work in because if you don't it's it's
not going to come to you you know going to fall
in your lap and and sometimes
when you know that all right i'm going through it right now this is
tough let's just take an inch forward let's go
an inch forward today that'll be better than going
backward you don't want to go back
but i think sometimes just man just just knowing that it's
going to be a challenge i think sometimes that's uh
that's a good thing to know we know okay i
want to this is my goal boy it's going to be a lot of obstacles in there
so let me get in shape
let me get in shape with my mind
and my body to be able to navigate to get to where i need to get to
well you come into the world alone
and you die alone my friend and you've got to be on this
journey of growth for yourself can't be contingent on another person
and i think a lot of people
who are in pain or looking you know
for some you know grounding often look to that other person if
I date that person then I'm gonna be okay it's never
the case like you've got to be okay with
yourself in order to attract that person you know
into your life to begin with I don't know how you
can compel that in somebody they've got to figure
that out for themselves thinking of myself as the
person who's just good enough to recognize
that other people are better stopped me and now start
thinking relentlessly about acquiring new skills
that's it like whatever be inspired by people that
better than you great that's amazing but don't sit there
and lament which is what i used to do
that you're not as good
as them find out how close can you get most times we live a life of
have to do i have to study i have to work i have
to do this and i have to do that i have to have
to have to have to where did the love
to go we just end up living a life of have to and i forgot
about our own selves.
By subscribing to the pressures that come from all fronts
in our lives, we've forgotten to live our own lives.
We don't have time to unwind.
We don't have time to spend with our own selves.
We don't have time to be with
nature and take a deep breath
and just relish the crispness of the air. We don't
have the time to do all of that.
When the pressures are so high and the pace is so
fast, we just don't have time for ourselves, ladies and gentlemen.
We are just so extensively
in crisis all the time,
and I just wonder
if this life wasn't
meant to be full of love and joy and happiness.
I just think we're getting it a little bit wrong.
So, life is hard.
None of us get out of here unscathed.
It is hard.
I'm not a Pollyanna minimalist on the things that cause us suffering.
If you don't fix yourself with limited identities,
if you do not compare yourself with anything,
See, if you want this tree to grow to its fullest thing,
that's why I said not the fruit,
root.
If you count the fruits,
maybe that tree is bearing more fruit than this one, that's not
the point.
You nurture the root,
the fullest possible nurture if you give to the root, what it has
to become, it will become.
A blade of grass cannot become a tree, but is it not wonderful?
So I think success is a funny thing
which is we all seem to pursue it, but we don't
know how to measure it or actually how to define it.
So how do you pursue something that you can't measure?
I think we must all stop measuring promotions,
salaries, and these things,
but rather measure the momentum of your career.
Does my career have momentum?
Can I see it moving in the right direction?
Can I see it gathering moss, you know?
Can I see that it's becoming easier for me to keep the momentum?
It's becoming easier for me to grow the size of this thing.
It's requiring less effort.
That's the thing we need to measure.
That's the thing that we need to be cognizant of,
which is the momentum of our career is not just
the markers that we think define our success.
We snap, we react at the drop of a hat just
because we are out of balance.
People who have a balanced life know how to handle pressure.
People whose lives are not balanced sink under pressure.
About two years ago, we were having a conversation and he said,
you know, you teach the secret to life is peak state versus lousy state
or being energy rich versus energy poor,
that a relationship, you can love somebody,
but if the energy is low, the energy is high, well,
you swap those words and you swap peak state for beautiful state.
I said, that works.
You know, a high energy state is a beautiful state.
Any state where you're high energy would be like love
or joy or gratitude or drive or courage or faith or,
you know, playfulness or fun.
Any of those things are beautiful states.
So he goes, yeah, yeah, I agree.
And I said, and then suffering states would be low energy states.
So that would be frustration, sadness, anger,
resentment, loneliness, boredom, whatever.
He goes, yeah, that's exactly right.
So I can swap those.
He goes, if you swap them,
there's something cool that you might see or do.
I said, what's that question?
He said, well, he said,
I've made a decision that I'm going to live my life where I'm going
to live in a beautiful state every day, no matter what.
Even if it doesn't, even if it rains on my parade,
even if people do things that are unjust.
He said, the reason is because in a beautiful state,
just like you teach peak state, everything
flows.
And I said, well, that's pretty much what I've been teaching, Yoshi.
He asked, but if you think of the lousy states as suffering states,
he said, then you can
end suffering just by ending the state.
But I realized I didn't relate to suffering.
Like if you had told me two years ago, Tony, do you suffer?
Are you kidding me?
I got the greatest life.
I had the most incredible wife and four kids
and I got 30 working companies and I'm financially
free and I have a mission I love and I'm in good health.
And that would all be honest.
I wouldn't have been dishonest about it.
But what really helped me out of that conversation,
I left there and I went, well, where do I suffer?
And I realized frustration is suffering.
I get frustrated.
I get concerned.
I get pissed off.
I get worried sometimes.
I get these feelings.
And so what I decided to do was just really create
a 90-second rule for myself
where I would end suffering as it arises.
Because everybody tells you you're going to end suffering.
It's all crap.
The reason is your brain is a 2-million-year-old brain.
It's not designed to make you happy.
It's designed to make you survive.
but there's no saber-toothed tiger for you to react to anymore
so now we worry about what are
people thinking of us do i have enough money over
the last two years what i've done is play this
little 90 second rule and if i feel tension
in me i go okay that's suffering where's it coming
from what am i stressed about what am i concerned about
and what i immediately do is i realize
the stressful thought since i've seen christianity i kind
of traded one thing what i really do now
is i dig in and i notice that the only time you have stress
or suffer is when you believe a
stressful thought. Cause what are the chances
of everybody doing exactly what you think they
should do the right way every day? Zero.
What are the chances of the people you love doing what you
want them to do the way you want to do them every day?
Zero. What are the chances of you doing the
right thing every day, even if you're talented and disciplined?
Zero. So your happiness will
never last as long as it's got expectation behind it.
What I did was I began to realize
I made the decision of the most important decision I believe
of your life, that I'm not
going to suffer anymore life's too short to suffer
and i'm going to live in a beautiful state every
day and the way i do it is i catch myself
when i start to get that sense of stress i let it go
and i see the eye to go by so your thoughts thoughts about
this person messing up your
business are not falling through if i was in a room
with 10 000 people i guarantee you 60 70
percent of the business owners have the same thoughts
at times right i ask people all the
time tell me your most stressful thought oh i'm
worried about my children this may happen how
How many of you have had that thought?
Everybody.
Uh, I might not make it financially, blah, blah, blah.
How many have had that?
Everybody.
My point is, it's not your thought, it's the mind.
Not your mind.
When you think it's your mind, you identify with it,
and you can't separate from yourself.
But when you realize, these thoughts have been around
for millions of years, and I'm just thinking
the same thought that so many people thought before.
Like, how many people have ever thought,
I'm gonna kill this son of a bitch?
Now, you didn't do it,
because you didn't believe you were really gonna kill them.
but you felt it, you said it, you were there, right?
So we all have thoughts.
It's only the stressful thoughts we believe that mess us up.
So what I try to show people is,
if you can start to realize,
these thoughts have been around for millions of years.
If I told you a million, a thousand, a hundred years ago
that we're gonna go to the moon and back,
you'd call me a lunatic or crazy.
If I said a hundred years ago,
you can have a little box like this,
it'll fit in your pocket and you can click on it
and you can see what the weather is any place.
You could click on it and see a live person
on the other side of the earth and talk to them
by looking in this box and the way it works
is invisible waves are traveling around the earth
and it pulls invisible waves in the box.
You go like, read between the lines.
There's no way, you dumb idiot, it's never gonna happen.
So what I want you to realize is thoughts are invisible waves.
When you turn on TV, it takes invisible waves
and depending on the channel, you're gonna see
a love story or an adventure or a drama
or a comedy or a horror.
The way you use your body determines
which of those thought waves come through you.
One moment you're pissed off,
the next moment somebody makes you laugh,
you change your body, you change the channel,
you change what comes through you.
So what I've tried to do
in this very beautiful state is simple.
First, identify where you're suffering,
what's your favorite flavor?
Are you a worrier?
Are you a pissed off person?
Yes, angry.
What is it you do?
Second of all, decide you're gonna kill
that monster while it's little.
You're not gonna wait till it's Godzilla taking his city.
You're gonna break the pattern.
You start to feel the stress.
You see it as thoughts going by,
And then you focus on something to appreciate, enjoy, or love.
Appreciation, love, and joy destroy suffering.
You can't be grateful and angry simultaneously.
It's possible.
You can't be worried and fearful and grateful simultaneously.
So I tell people gratitude is one of the emotions
to cultivate that will destroy the suffering.
Compare yourself to who you were yesterday,
not to who someone else is today.
Life ain't
about medals.
It ain't about ******* certificates.
It ain't about houses, money, cars.
Fame all that bullshit. It's about scars
So when you get judged when everything is said
and done with you won't get judged on your medals
To get judged on your scars.
Those scars show your willingness to get to the side.
They show your failures
They show your willingness to start from scratch
They show what you're willing to do to go
the distance to see what you're capable of
So make sure in life don't be afraid to get scars. Stay hard
There's always going to be people around
that are better at something than you are.
You can get bitter and you can get resentful,
and worse, you can get hopeless.
You really have to stop comparing
yourself in some ways to other people.
And the reason for that is that the particularities
of your life are so idiosyncratic
that there isn't anyone really all that much like you, you know,
because the details of your life happen to matter.
Who do you know that you can compare yourself to?
That's easy. You. Yesterday.
if your life isn't going the way it
is now you can find someone else to blame
or you could think okay
how do i know if my judgment is accurate
and the question is well have i really done everything i
possibly could to set
my life straight well
so there's a there's
a task living
a world where
there are media companies whose mission it
is to deliver your eyeballs to their advertisers
run the experiment pick up the newspaper tomorrow
and count the number of positive stories to
to negative stories and it changes our mindset
and it puts us in a state of fear and your brain
is the most powerful weapon once you put away your phones
and your computers and all that
---- we have nowadays that's great
but your brain is the only thing you have when you're going
through depression when you're going through
hard times you're going through real life ----
you can't google that ---- man you're alone you're alone you may have
a shrink you're going through
you may have a best friend you're going
to but there's 24 hours in the day where you're alone
in this brain and your brain is talking to you in all kind of ways
and it wants to control you
pull you in these different pockets if you can't control your own brain
and your brain controls
you you're fucked you got to tell your brain where you want to go
and how you want to go and
how you want to get there you got to control it
if not it's over hard work the only way anything
gets accomplished that's all i heard back
in those days you gotta work hard go back again go back
again go back again going back and going back
and going back until the ---- just becomes your
mind would say **** okay we're gonna figure it out you know find a way
because he is not going
to stop and that's how you do three things you put
in yourself you immerse yourself wherever it is
And you become that.
Hardest part
About change is not making the same choice
as you did the day before.
And the moment you decide to make a different choice,
you're going to feel uncomfortable
because you're stepping from the known into the unknown.
See, you can do anything.
You can get up any hour, read any book,
take any class, make any change,
develop any skill, do any discipline.
I mean, you can do it all.
When this how and the why,
or when the why starts to grow,
The how gets simple.
Most challenges, opposition, adversity that we encounter are internal.
Even though on the surface it looks to be external.
Because when you come up against something,
whether it be a person, situation, or circumstance,
in perception, our perspective will go to a space
and place that is external.
When the course and the path to victory is internal.
Meaning we possess everything we need in order
to be victorious over the things that we encounter.
But we look at problems, situations, circumstances,
adversities as something to be external,
when really it's something that's internal because we possess
everything we already need in order to get through it.
There's a peculiar magic in realizing you're
not the same person who started the journey.
It's not a loss of who you were.
Rather, it's an evolution into the person you
are always meant to become.
Embrace the transformation.
Fear is a mile wide and an inch deep, and so it looks like
this ocean that you're going to step into and drown.
But as soon as you step into it,
you realize it was not that deep at all and you can keep
walking through it.
Face your fears, whatever they are.
The fear that we might not do a good job.
The fear that it might not turn out as we hope it would.
The fears that are lurking there,
some that have come and have been there even maybe since
our childhood.
Life is consisted of both fear and faith.
Faith of course is the ability to overcome your fears.
But what you have to do in terms of your fears about perhaps
your own inadequacy, not feeling
strong enough at the moment, you just have to face those fears.
You just have to go to work on them.
The pursuit of your goals will rarely be easy.
You're going to feel discomfort, frustration,
and self-doubt most of the time.
But instead of getting discouraged,
understand that there's growth in the struggle.
You can't become someone you've never
been by doing the things you've always done.
Be proud of the effort you're putting in.
Be patient with the results,
because it's only a matter of time before you come out
on top.
It's a part of life.
We were made to evolve and grow,
and that means you're going to outgrow people.
That means you're going to outgrow situations and places and things,
and that is okay.
Most people will not understand your obsession,
your drive, and your determination.
Success is a lonely journey.
That's just the reality.
And most people are not going to understand why you're
so driven, why you're so obsessed.
And if you try and make them understand,
you're going to end up frustrated.
The best advice I can tell you is go on the journey by yourself.
It is the best journey, man.
Leveling up, becoming the best version of yourself
is the most awesome journey you will ever go on.
But it's a journey that you will probably go on by yourself.
You always have to be the person who roots
for you before everyone else does.
And it's usually a single clap in the auditorium
for a very long period of time.
It is a slow clap that's just you, rooting for you.
Sometimes sitting there thinking about the life that you want to live
and the person you want to be simply isn't enough.
If thinking about all the things that you want
in your life isn't enough to get you going,
why don't you sit there and think about the things that you don't want?
All the feelings you don't want to experience.
All the pain you don't want to feel.
If you just can't visualize the bright future ahead of you,
why don't you sit there and contemplate all
the darkness that you're going to be surrounded by
if you don't do what you need to do?
like sitting on your deathbed wishing you could
do it all over again differently but you can't
wishing you had done what you need to do now
when it's too late to do it ask yourself the question
what does the future look like if i don't
do what i know i need to do once you've take that first
step you've looked the beast in the face
and you'll start progressing not linearly but exponentially
in speed so what's cool is that it doesn't really matter how small
that first step is because it'll
start doubling and anything
that doubles grows unbelievably quickly and so that's
a very useful thing to know too I think
the bigger question is do you know
yourself you know I think like there's unlimited people
who are successful and
happy they got straight A's
and there's unlimited people who are successful and
happy who got D's and F's the question is who are you
which version of the game
are you what do you like
who do you want to be and I think that's what you need
to focus on you cannot wish for a strong character
and an easy life each is the price of the other
what if what you're going through isn't hard what
if you're just sensitive at some point you have to
forget what other people think about you nothing you
do has to make sense to anyone else your
dreams don't have to align with what others think is best for you
because you're the one who has to
live with the consequences of your actions start prioritizing
your happiness above being a people
pleaser. It's your turn to be the main character
of your story. Most people are
standing jobs or working things
or even marriage or relationships because they
fear change. Can I do better? Can I get a better opportunity? Will
somebody hire me? Will somebody date me?
Will somebody marry me? Will somebody want my
kids that I have? That's a fear
and people don't want to make change because they've
already told themselves they can't do it.
And when you make adjustments, when you
when you stop yourself first,
you're really insane because let somebody else tell you
what you cannot do but in the process of that prepare
for success in other words are you willing
to put time in your next move stop beating yourself up
and stop judging yourself we all go through
chapters right like sometimes you're super in love with your partner
and like that's all you can
obsess about you know other times you're you know super
into your profession because you got a new
initiative i think this comes down
to judgment stop beating yourself up there is not even a close
framework for what's right.
Everyone's balance is massively individual and more
importantly balance ebbs and flows forever.
We are not just blessed, we're privileged.
We are truly privileged. There are
not many people around this planet who are this lucky.
Yet majority of us
chooses to live in mediocrity and I've done that too.
You know if we are so
privileged to be this rich
and we're not comparing ourselves to neighbors, we're
comparing ourselves to the neighbors far far away
on other continents then why do
we choose mediocrity if it's in our hands
to actually do something and we
have to do something if we want
to continue living on this beautiful planet
to realize that you really can depend
on yourself you you you of course have to
have many great people around you
but I knew that if it was going to happen for
me I had to keep moving forward maybe
that was a stumble maybe it was a crawl
maybe it was just barely trying
to put one thing in front of the other during
that time but I kept pushing
for it I kept moving forward and I think that's
one of the lessons I still carry forward
with me to this day when I see things
getting tough but when I see things
that seem insurmountable to other people I
know we just have to stay the course we have
to stay focused and we keep
putting one foot in front of the other
the key is to keep moving and and that's
something that I think really
was that turning point for me. If you actually make
pretend nobody else lives on earth, nothing is scary.
I think people got caught.
I think they just get caught that everybody's in this
framework of other people's opinions.
Like, just, it's how we're raised.
This is why I put out so much content.
Maybe today's the day that I say it a different way that makes
people realize their mom and their girlfriend and their
boyfriend and their uncle and definitely anonymous people on
social media and Lewis and Gary's opinions actually don't
matter, the liberation to then actually do ---- and now you're
doing ----, full throttle because of whether you win or lose,
it doesn't matter. I have 24 hours
in a day. I try to take advantage of every hour.
And I have certain rules that I initially tell
people on a regular basis.
If you want to start living a successful life, start walking into a
consistent time that you should get up every day.
Don't let it deviate. If you say get up at eight
o'clock, don't hit the snooze and get up at eight-thirty.
I get up at four-thirty. That's
is my time. I'm not a happy guy getting up, but that's a goal I set.
And I would just tell you
this honestly, if you're about to make a change in your life
and you feel uncomfortable, that's
the best feeling you can have.
Because for the first time in your life, you're making a decision
that's going to be best for you and not what somebody told you to do.
And that's when all
bets are off because you're about
to enter some uncharted waters that's going to force you to
challenge yourself to be perfect in so many ways,
and shoot for perfection is all good.
You don't shoot for average,
because you're not going to hit all of that. If you shoot
for perfection, and you hit good or great, you're winning.
So what I'm trying to say is that sometimes
when we think that we don't know the solution,
we don't know the decision, it is not because we don't know.
In my 42 years, I've learned
that we always deep inside know the truth,
but we're just so scared to face it.
There's a famous formula,
which I'm sure you've heard of,
E plus R equals O, where
E is the event, something happens
to you, R is your reaction,
and O is the outcome.
And the only thing that matters is your reaction to whatever comes up.
Because you know in life, in business,
stuff's going to come up at some point.
You just don't know what it is, and it's all about
your reaction and how you deal with that.
So to me, the biggest thing is the humility was such a factor.
I didn't realize how big of a deal
that was, how much that worked for me.
It's like, I don't believe I'm as great as I know I am.
My logical side knows that I'm up to something,
but I just don't internalize it.
I won't let it penetrate my soul.
I think I have the ability to be the biggest deal,
but I will never believe it.
I believe anyone can change. It's never too late to change.
And you can actually use the things in your past,
use the darkness, you can redeem it.
Every experience that comes your way is a tool.
when we lost our home and we had to go live with my grandparents,
I understood that these are just
material things, that that doesn't define you.
It's not, it doesn't make you. So when you get
these challenges, when you have these things
that come up in your life, continue to move forward,
baby steps, baby steps,
become intentional about what it is that you're going to do.
Nobody in your family may have done that.
Nobody in your community, your city, your country may
have done that. But if that's what's been put here for you,
take it in baby steps. Begin to see how
that you're going to move forward.
It's exactly what I did once I came and I understood my purpose
and I understood what it is that I was supposed to be doing.
I set down a creative plan as to how
I was going to go about deploying that.
And I think that's what you really have to do and take
it in baby steps. Don't try to do the whole thing at once.
Sit it down, look at it, break it down,
rebuild it, put it back together,
and then assign timeframes to everything that you want to
accomplish and break it down in phases
and then focus everything you have on that phase.
We are obsessed about this idea about every one of us has a talent
but the truth is that we are
multi-talented and if I compare myself facet
to facet to facet there is always someone who has
different energy who's better at this who's better
at that but what makes me valuable is the
combination of what I don't have to compare myself
In fact, if I compare myself, that's the surest way
to depression. I promise, if you want to try.
When you don't know where you're going in life,
do not look four years down the line.
Do not look two years or a year. You look next week,
next month. You keep your goals short.
And that way, as you accomplish those goals,
then you can start piling up little trophies
or little moments to know that you're actually
accomplishing something. You're actually climbing the steps to success.
When people make the mistake
and their goals, but a goal that doesn't allow them
to qualify success quick enough.
And so I always tell people, shorten your goals, shorten your window,
and that's how you find your voice.
You cannot find your voice if you're trying to,
if you're coming to Hollywood to be a star.
Well, if you come in just to be a star in entertainment,
or you're going to college,
and you're trying to graduate in four years,
and what you're going to do, it confuses people.
That's why a lot of today's millennials,
they see short-term success as a faster way of finding their voice
versus a college degree those with the greatest hope have
the greatest influence and I love that
like there are two kinds of people in the world there
are people in the world that think the world
is getting better and there are people that are think
the world is getting worse who do you want
to hang out with and then you assign
the time frames I think the time frames the timelines are
the critical piece to it because that's where
so many people go from just having a hobby or a
a dream and I'm sure many people understand
that dreams are tough because
without a time frame a timeline they may just stay dreams
when you assign a time
frame and a plan of action to it it can become
a goal and then it can become
attainable and I think that's what you have
to do is it brings it makes it very
present that you have your work cut out
for you you know what you need to do and
now it's just about doing it let's come out
of this leaning into humility and
Gratitude, and that will be the springboard
to everything you know.
You know, just be grateful.
Like, grateful for the time you're spending with family now,
grateful for the innovation time, the thinking time.
Gratitude and humility.
The single most important thing in your life
is your dream.
It's your dream.
It's what you dream about.
If you see it, you can achieve it.
If you don't have vision, get in this world.
You need something
to sustain yourself through that.
It's not optional.
because the the price of existence is so high
that without that sustaining meaning it it corrupts you
it it embitters you and and once you're embittered
things go downhill rapidly you get vengeful and
and you get angry and and you get destructive
and then there's really no limit to that and i've been
suggesting to people that the sustaining meaning
that they can find in their life isn't to be found
through happiness, let's say,
because happiness doesn't work when you're not happy,
when things have gone badly for you,
even for accidental reasons.
But you can find sustaining meaning and responsibility.
Because God sent you here,
and no human being came to this planet empty.
No matter what you've done,
if it didn't kill you, there's more left.
Turn your wounds into wisdom.
you will be wounded many times
in your life you'll make mistakes some people
will call them failures
but I have learned that failure is really God's way
of saying excuse me you're moving
in the wrong direction a fixed mindset is when
you believe your talent
and intelligence are fixed traits a growth mindset is
when you believe your talent and intelligence are malleable traits that
you can actually change them you can
improve them you can get better over
time smarter over time more competent over time
and to do that you just need
to reframe the failure as a learning experience
so that's one of the big
ones people that can really fail without losing
their enthusiasm you've got to
stop asking how little you can get away
with and start asking one of the most
powerful questions in the universe
which is how much can you bear you came here
loaded and you came here to make a deposit
and deposit you will make and if
If you don't make, you are a generational thief
because you stole from the next generation.
The next generation is supposed to benefit
from what you came to deliver.
And if you settle down on what you've done
and not do what you could do,
then you robbed them of what you came to leave
for them to enjoy.
That is why you should never allow what you've done
to stop you from doing what you could do.
Take responsibility for yourself, and that works.
And then if you do that properly,
you can take responsibility for your family
And then if you do that properly, you can take responsibility
for your community and you can continue to burden yourself voluntarily,
let's say, with a greater and greater range of existential challenges.
And all that that does is make more and more and more of you.
And that works as an antidote to the catastrophe of life.
The highest, grandest vision
possible for your life because
you become what you believe.
When you wake up in the morning and your life means something
to somebody other than you, that you have a purpose.
If you don't go do the things that you're going to do,
people's lives will suffer.
And I think that that kind of purpose, that like to live in service,
not to you, but to live in service to humanity,
to live in service to your family, to live in service to your church,
to your city, to your country, to the world.
Living in service is that I feel like
that is the purest form of joy.
Woe is me. It's not my fault. It was so and so. They did it to me.
I want you to stop that immediately.
Remind yourself that you own your life.
Remind yourself of cause and effect.
Remind yourself that you are in control.
You could make a different decision
and you could get a different outcome
because you can't control the world.
You can't control other people.
You can only control yourself.
And between that stimulus and that response
is your ability to make a different choice.
You can be still long enough in all of your endeavors,
the good times, the hard times,
To connect yourself to the source, I call it God, you can call
it whatever you want, to the force, nature, Allah, the power.
If you can connect yourself to the source
and allow the energy that is your personality, your life force,
to be connected to the greater force, anything is possible for you.
I'm talking about being honest with yourself about what you're doing,
about how you've performed,
about whether or not you're being weak in something.
Because if you're being weak,
the only problem with that is ignoring it,
is pretending like it's okay, is not holding yourself to a standard.
It's going to happen from time to time.
But if you're not honest with yourself about where you are,
if you're not having that hard, direct talk,
then you're never going to make progress.
You've got to make a decision.
Listen to me.
You got to make a decision. What's the decision?
What's the thing you came here for now?
We're at the moment. The clock
is ticking people say all the time. Hey life is short
Let me tell you something, life can be long. You bury
your dreams, you quit, this life gets long
See, time's relative. Two minutes of you being with your sweetie
doing whatever you like to do with them that can go by quick
Right, what about the last two minutes on a treadmill?
Does that not seem like it goes by for like four hours,
right? So if you're enjoying it
it's short. If it's painful, it's long. Life can be long.
When you lose your job, when someone you
thought you'd be with for the rest of your life said,
no, we can't do this no more. That's when
you have to stand.
That's when you have to begin to live this faith.
And that's not on you. That's
when you got to call on something.
How do you let that mind be in you? You got to be out of your
mind to believe in spite of these numbers, you can still make it.
In spite of the pain you're
feeling, you can still come back again. I believe it.
