As Brazilian media reported the news
that defeated presidential candidate Flávio Bolsonaro
had fled to the US, public opinion in the country remained divided.
The 45-year-old former senator
is under investigation over allegations of corruption,
money laundering and tax evasion.
Personally, I would have done the same thing
because the persecution here is severe,
it's visible.
The thing about him leaving is that if he had stayed,
the same thing that happened to
his father would almost certainly have happened to him.
He would have ended up in prison.
So he had the chance of getting out.
I would have done the same."
Bolsonaro lost Sunday's runoff vote to incumbent Lula
da Silva by more than four million votes.
He also lost his immunity from prosecution.
Fabio's departure is, unfortunately, an act of cowardice on his part.
He should be facing the consequences here, not abroad.
Global leaders have endorsed the result and congratulated Lula.
Bolsonaro's ally, US President Donald Trump,
called the election terrible.
Bolsonaro has refused to concede defeat and,
from Miami, declared himself the true leader
of Brazil.
