SBU counterintelligence foiled an attempt by two Russian soldiers to escape to the Ukrainian capital after fleeing the front. The militants had changed into civilian clothes and were attempting to hitchhike to Kyiv. According to the SBU, both detainees served in the 291st Motorized Rifle Regiment of the Russian Southern Military District. After being sent to assault Ukrainian positions in the Kramatorsk area, they fled to the "gray zone," where they found civilian clothes in an abandoned house. They buried their Russian uniforms and service weapons, then walked to the nearest regional center. Along the way, a driver agreed to give them a ride to Dnipro, from where they planned to travel to Kyiv, where one of them has relatives. However, they were detained at a checkpoint entering the Dnipropetrovsk region. One of the men was found wearing a Russian military dog tag around his neck.
SBU investigators have notified a militant from the Luhansk region of suspicion under two articles of the Ukrainian Criminal Code: Part 1, 2 of Article 111 - treason during martial law; Part 7 of Article 111-1 - collaboration activities. An investigation is ongoing to establish all the circumstances of the crime. He is being held without bail and faces life imprisonment with confiscation of property. His accomplice, a Russian citizen, is currently being held as a prisoner of war.

In late February 2022, she voluntarily joined the 91st Separate Rifle Regiment of the 1st Army Corps of the Russian Southern Military District. There, she was promoted to sergeant. She served in the Russian armed forces until August 2024, after which she decided to leave the temporarily occupied part of the Donetsk region and move permanently to an EU country. To do so, she needed to renew her Ukrainian passport. SBU officers documented her crossing the state border and then detained her at the Kovel hotel where she was staying. During the search, they found a Russian passport, Russian military ID cards, a veteran's ID card from the aggressor country, and Russian rubles. Investigators have informed the detainee that she is suspected of treason. She is being held without bail and faces life imprisonment with confiscation of property.
