I did not know her personally,
but I can tell you that I met her a couple times and
had short chats with her, and oh my goodness,
she always had time to listen to people.
I think that's what struck me a lot in my interactions with her.
I felt very comfortable, and she wanted to know,
like, oh, you know, what are you working
on, or, you know, what's important to you?
So those are things that I would want to share about her.
So teaching at Cal State LA in East LA with a large Latino population,
I'm thinking that
Dolores Huerta really speaks to you and your community in a deep way.
Absolutely.
I think, once again,
just crossing so many social justice issues, representing the
Chicana community, the Latine community, you know,
are using gender-neutral pronouns here, and just, once again,
an image of a woman who never backed down from a struggle.
She also stands out because, let me tell you,
Christine, that often I ask people questions.
How many of you have heard of the Lotus West?
And so in a class of, let's say, you know, 30 students,
the majority of whom are, the term Hispanic is used,
I say Latine, Chicana, Latine,
the majority of whom are members of the Latine community
or Hispanic community.
Thank
Over the years, there have been more and more
who will raise their hand,
but it shows how little she is still,
she's included within a curriculum,
within the K-12 curriculum.
And I think, yeah, so there's still a need to teach her story,
you.
and I can say now I have two classes that I have,
you know, two, at least 60 students,
or approximately 60 students, I guess, who know who she is now.
