Now that visit comes in the wake
of the latest Medicaid fraud charges coming down this week.
Four people are accused of scheming to defraud
the government of more than $40 million.
Fox 9's Emily Pofall has more on the charges
and the first court appearance made by one of the suspects.
Faisal Elmi billed the federal government
for supposedly taking care of people with
autism, though federal prosecutors say he
wasn't always providing those services.
He didn't have anything to say to us as he left the courtroom today.
Did you over bill for services?
Did you defraud the government?
Elmy ran Aspen Associates based out of Fridley.
It came out in court that Elmy was trying
to travel to visit family in the UK,
set to leave tomorrow with no scheduled return date.
After being indicted,
he still requested the court to let him leave the country,
but today withdrew that request.
He's already given up his passport.
Aspen Associates is one of four businesses
named this week in indictments for Medicaid fraud.
According to those court documents,
Smart Therapy billed Medicaid for $19.8 million
and was reimbursed for $7.7 million.
Home Sweet Home billed for $10 million
and was reimbursed for $8 million.
American Home Health Care billed for $3.2 million
and was reimbursed for $3.2 million.
And Aspen Associates billed for $7.4 million
and was reimbursed for $2.8 million.
As mentioned yesterday,
there were raids at two more businesses suspected of Medicaid fraud.
At ISCA Inc in St. Louis Park,
we saw state and federal agents carrying out boxes of records.
And the same scene over at Bright Horizon Therapy Center in Edina,
the agents looking for potential evidence.
DHS records show that ISCA received more than $16 million
in Medicaid funds for autism services in the past seven years.
During that same time period, Bright Horizons received more
than $18 million in Medicaid funds for autism services.
