There's only two things you should be practicing
with a little one in the pool that actually
matter and in this video I'm going to explain the two things
and break them down in detail.
This is my son Rafi, he absolutely loves the pool.
Rafi is a little further advanced than
maybe your child but he can float
and he can swim short distances in the water. Me and Rafi
have been practicing since he's eight days old
and we have been through the journey together.
I have scared him in the pool, I've pushed him too hard in the pool,
and we've also had a lot of fun in the pool and a lot of learning.
High five, Rafi!
Woohoo!
If you want to see his videos on me teaching him to swim,
you can find the links to those in the description below.
There's a whole playlist on teaching him how to float,
and through that process we teach you how
to teach a child to float as well.
But in this video, the two most important things
that we're going to talk about are
breath control and...
Back floating, that's all a child should really
be working on if they're under the age of one
and a half. Now there's always special cases where children
are very advanced for their age
and they're ready for the next step,
like swimming short distances, swimming roll to float,
but for the sake of this video we're only going
to talk about breath control and back floating. So
when it comes to breath control there's
a couple things we want to look for. Desensitivity of the face
So we're wiping Rafi's face.
We take water in our hands and wipe our face, or his face,
and then we want to get the child under water.
So we use our breath control cues,
which are physical cues where we open up our hands
and we dip him in the water. Ready, set, go.
Good. And then we come back up. Very good, buddy.
Great job. You would practice that over and over
with the child until they have good breath control.
Once a child has that, then we go into
back floating. We lean the child back.
We look for little things that the child does properly.
And when they do something proper,
we lift them up out of the water, which is called
reinforcements. We're going to practice this over
and over with the children. And soon your child
will be so comfortable, so confident.
in the water that teaching them to actually swim
when it's time will be a whole lot easier for you
