How Ashton Jeanty And The Raiders Can Rewrite The Narrative This Sunday...

A little bit of a Friday night vid here.
I always want to hop on here
and hear what Clint Kubiak has to say in his pressers.
I love listening to him talk.
I think he is the type of coach that doesn't want to mince words,
but has a little bit of a sense of humor,
so he likes to play around in these pressers.
And I appreciate how he's handling...
This four-game losing streak because, to me, it ain't his fault.
I mean, he's getting every little bit out of 38-year-old Kirk Cousins
and this offense that is talented in some areas
and then lacking severely in others.
There's a little bit of a Derek Carr thing I wanted to watch here
because any chance we get to dunk on Josh McDaniels, I will do it.
And then the JPJ stuff and potentially the Brian Thomas Jr. stuff
seemingly is heating up.
I think we're going to be able to see Trey soon.
At right guard, but ultimately, the thesis of this video is this.
If last week was kind of one of those pseudo,
you know, narrative-changing games where it's like,
this is a game you should win, blah, blah, blah,
and then you're like, okay, well, I guess McVay and Stafford
and Kyron Williams and Puka are going to be able
to out-coach Clint Kubiak and Robbie Leonard.
This game is actually a narrative-changing game in terms of,
look, do you want to save your season or not?
If you win this game, you're 4-4, and you know,
you're getting healthier, and Jack
Besch is back, and Dante's back,
and now you've got a gauntlet to maybe show you can be competitive
in these games or not.
Or you lose to Geno Smith and some talented Jets players,
and your season's essentially
over.
And every game from here on out, people are going
to be screaming and yelling for Fernando
Mendoza.
We knew this time was coming, we just didn't know when,
a little bit later than we thought
it would be.
But here we are.
So that's what we're going to talk about in this video.
Can we change the narrative?
Are we trading JPJ?
Only time will tell.
It's really crazy how the confidence that you have
in your football team can switch on a dime.
Because if you told me, as I checked the Call Street markets here,
that I'm seriously considering...
Taking the Jets in this game a couple weeks ago after coming off
a back-to-back really good losses against the Chiefs losing by three
and then against the Bills losing by three.
I would say you're crazy,
but now after losing to the Rams in the way in which we did
and Clint Kubiak maybe hinting at the possibility of Fernando Mendoza,
I don't know if that gives me more or less confidence in this game.
I can't tell you the last time that we won a game in New York.
We have success against the Jets at home,
but that 10 a.m. body clock, West Coast to East Coast travel,
I don't love it.
I don't love it right now.
If you purchase the no contract on Cal Sheehan,
you throw 25 on there, you win.
If they don't win, you win 48.
30? Interesting, interesting.
I will say this, if you are interested in checking out Kalshi,
use code ALLABOARD to instantly get 25 when you trade 25.
And the reason why Kalshi is so unique and better, in my opinion,
than your typical sportsbook is because you're
not betting against the house
like you are when you use a traditional sportsbook.
You are purchasing yes or no contracts, peer-to-peer trading,
where we set the market on anything you can think of.
Movies, TV, politics, media.
If you want to purchase those contracts,
Kalshi has it.
So this is a narrative-changing game
for a lot of coaches and players in this game,
but I want to focus on a little bit of...
How do I say this?
Okay, I'm just going to say this,
and then we're going to embrace how we feel about it.
Ashton Gentry calling out the Jets,
calling out some of the players on that team.
It's Ashton Gentry's second season as a Raider.
We don't expect you to be the mature adult that Kirk Cousins is.
Was it a smart thing to do?
No.
Was it definitely not a smart thing to do because Ash
and Gentry hasn't had the statistical
season that we all thought he would?
Definitely not.
Is it all his fault?
No.
But it's been said.
It's been said.
And some people are like, oh, I want the old Raiders.
I want the old Raiders.
Well, here's the old Raiders.
Win, lose, or draw, we're talking crap.
So Ashton Gentry has come out and said this thing about the Jets.
Back it up.
If Ashton Gentry clearly thinks that he is one
of the main reasons why this running game
isn't going well, and he clearly thinks
that some guys on that other team don't want to
tackle, then he should be able to have an awesome game.
And I also expect it.
So while I don't think it was smart for him to say it,
the narrative of this game could
change.
How we perceive Ashton Gentry, depending on this game.
If he goes out and he stinks it up,
we're all going to be calling for him to own up to his mistakes
and get better and never speak about another team before we play again,
especially if we lose.
If we come out in this game and he's awesome and we win,
we're going to say Ashton Gentry has arrived.
He was talking crap about a defensive-minded head coach's team,
saying that there's some people,
when they watch film, that don't want to hit.
And then he came out, and he had 140 yards and two touchdowns.
This is a narrative-changing game for Ashton Gentry.
This could be a linchpin, a canon event toward the rest of his career.
Is that a little dramatic? Yeah.
But the Raiders are a dramatic team.
They're up all the way up here.
They're all the way down here.
There's no in-between with the Raiders.
And this is another example of a game that can change the narrative
on how we feel about this coaching staff
and how this team is constructed and all these things.
But we all feel deep in our stomachs
that we know how this is going to go,
and that's a loss.
I'm so afraid to pick the Raiders to win this game, because
this is a game the Raiders, as a logo, lose time and time again.
This isn't a game that this team loses,
but it's a team that this team loses.
And now Ashton's thrown this thing in,
and now it's got a real Jeff Saturday vibe to it.
And now, it's time to change the narrative.
And if you don't, then until you are proven
to be taken seriously, we will not take you seriously.
Let's hear what Clint Kubiak has to say.
I'm sure they're going to ask him about it.
JPJ, Jack Besh, let's go.
All right, so JPJ is questionable, and Patrick Johnson is out.
I'll take any of your questions.
In regards to Jack Besh, have you activated him this week?
Yeah, we got until tomorrow.
So we'll see who it's going to be.
So as far as Dante, do you think there's a chance
for him to get any playing time on Sunday,
or is that still TBD as well?
I'm not going to tell you that.
With Patrick down, is there a chance that you're going to elevate?
Thank you.
That's what I'm talking about.
Happy Halloween.
With Patrick down, is there a chance that Keaton gets elevated again?
We'll see tomorrow.
You named Ashton, Max, and Dylan as captains.
What did you see from them?
Ashton is a captain that was named this week.
Was he named before or after the comments?
In particular, this week.
It's really a body of work and every week we name new captains
and those are guys that have been great leaders for our football team,
doing things the right way and excited for Max,
excited for Ashton, excited for all three of those guys.
Got to go play, got to go perform.
All right.
Jalen Naylor, I feel like he's getting separation.
I'm shocked that nobody's asking about it.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong.
Has this taken place before he made the comments?
This is Friday.
I thought he made the comments on Thursday.
Now, Phil, what's it going to take, you know, for him and Cousins
to kind of like turn those things to big plays?
Yeah, I think it's time on task as it continues to go,
and those guys have really developed a really good relationship,
and, you know, we're expecting Jalen to make plays,
Trey, whoever's in there,
you know, got to get open, and Kirk's got
to go through his progressions.
You talk about the competitions every week at certain positions.
How did you see the guys respond this week to competition, correct?
Yeah, well, when you're fighting for playing time, you know,
there is no better motivator.
Amen, brother.
You know.
That's something that we're always doing.
We've got a young roster,
and we've got to see who's going to be a big part of us moving forward.
At least we've got a coach that preaches.
I'd like to know, Tom, Trey Tucker's conditioning,
when did that show itself to you for the first time?
I guess, when did you gauge how unique that was?
I think that's what a starting NFL receiver has to do.
You have to be in great shape.
You've got to be able to run.
You've got to go play 70 plays a game at full speed.
So that's the expectation for that room, and he really sticks out.
He's stood out since April.
What kind of weapon is that for you guys
that he can have a finishing kick
in the fourth quarter with his speed because of his conditioning?
Yes.
Yeah, again, that's the expectation.
It's really good that he's in great shape,
but we've got to all be in as good a shape as him.
I'm switching some things up on the offensive line,
and Trey's having more of an opportunity.
You talked about him being a Swiss Army knife.
What have you seen from him this weekend?
Do you see him getting an opportunity this Sunday?
You know, yeah, Trey had an injury a few weeks ago.
He's battled back through it, getting healthy.
And I just see a guy that's working hard, a guy that is accountable,
and a young man that has a bright future ahead of him
and just got to keep getting better.
Answer the question.
Do you see him getting any playing time on Sunday?
Could be.
Are you hoping one of those guys can solidify
that position at some point?
Yeah, well, you know, it's a good thing to have,
to have guys that, many guys that can play, and,
you know, whether it's at any skill position,
receivers and defensive backs, you know, you are going to rotate guys.
In a perfect world, yeah, you want two guys that are going
to play every snap, but, you know, every situation is different.
We got multiple guys that can play.
Has he talked about needing to trust himself a little bit more
in running the ball? What does he mean by that?
We just got to go perform.
We got to go produce, go produce on Sunday.
So that's what it's about for the entire offense.
Outdoor game, early kick, is there anything
you can take away from New England
to prep for this experience?
Oh, yeah, wake up.
Yes, yeah, absolutely.
Just the importance of getting up, getting out of bed,
and getting ready to roll and getting ready to start fast.
Quitty talked about how Max sets the standard on defense
and everyone's chasing that standard.
How have you seen that really play out?
Well, first guy in the building.
One of the last guys to leave,
taking care of your body, being extremely intentional
about going through walkthroughs,
finishing every play in practice, having input with
all facets of the game plan,
pushing himself and special teams, all of the above.
This probably goes without saying,
but for all of the takes that we all have about Max,
nobody ever, ever better question his effort.
You mentioned holding guys more accountable.
He felt like he was doing that,
but he said he needs to take it up a notch.
Have you seen more from him, or is it kind of standard with N'Kobi?
That's a middle linebacker's job.
You've got to be the leader of the defense.
He's been our leader, and as he produces and does well,
then we continue to put more on his plate and expect more from him.
How do you feel about how
the interior defensive line has played thus far?
Do you need more from them?
They need to talk about stop the run
Rob, I would talk about it.
That's team defense, you know, team defense,
rushing coverage, working together.
He was one of the first two-time captains, you know, for the year.
Can you just talk about, you know, the testament that he won?
Did it bring us to the team and also special teams as well?
Yes, yes, great question.
Thank you.
Versatility is key.
Versatility is key.
If you can play four core special teams
and be a producer on your side of the ball,
then you have value in this league.
He has a lot of value on our team from his work ethic,
how he goes about his business, the type of person that he is.
You know, he's made plays for us.
And then, you know, as you make plays, the expectations grow.
I think I've said this before, but if you told me
that we'd be averaging 26 or 7 points per game
and we're top five in the league, I'd be like, man,
Ashton Gentry must be having a Bichon-type beer.
And he's not. Imagine if we could get this run game going.
We'll turn the corner on both of those this Sunday.
Yeah, just belief in our guys.
Belief in our guys. Belief in our coaches.
Great. Thanks, Coach.
Thanks.
I wonder if they mandated to the reporters that.
We're not talking about the nonsense.
I don't know. Interesting.
Oh, wait, we're not doing that yet.
Yeah.
Um.
Look,
we should win this game.
We're the better team than the Jets.
We just are.
They're not bad.
I won't say that the Jets are bad.
I'd be shocked if we would lose this game.
I don't.
And this isn't a complete Jeff Saturday situation.
But I could just see...
It's like the confetti test.
The confetti test is, close your eyes and can you see...
Josh Allen with the confetti pouring down
as he hoists the Lombardi trophy.
It's like, yes, I can see that one day.
Some people, you have a hard time seeing it.
Maybe that's your answer.
Let's do the Raiders post-game test.
Close your eyes.
Do it with me at home.
If your eyes aren't closed, then you're a scumbag.
I'm just kidding.
And close your eyes.
And think about whoever it is.
Tracy Wolfson after the game interviewing the game-winning quarterback.
And what are they talking about?
And in my mind, I see Geno Smith talking about how
I'm proud to be on a team that has a belief in me
and we have skilled guys and we're improving and growing as a unit
and last year was hard and I love Max,
but we had to show that we're the better team
and our guys want to blah, blah, blah, blah.
Can't you see that?
Can't you?
I feel like I can't see anything now because
my eyes are closed for so long.
Can't you see that?
That's what I see and it scares the daylights out of me.
But maybe Ashton talking a little ----
is what he needs to do to get it going.
It feels more and more like old JPJ is not going to be on the roster.
And Warren Mitchell on Raiders Beat talks a little bit about it.
The November 10th trade deadline is just 12 days away.
And for the Raiders, it's going to be interesting to see
if there are buyers or sellers ahead of the deadline.
There are several players in the Raiders building
that have been linked to trades in recent days.
And a new name that has emerged is a little more...
This week is JPJ.
JPJ showed up on the team's injury report on Thursday.
And flagship Raider host Q Myers said he wonders if JPJ's absence
might be related to trade conversations.
This one was interesting.
JPJ back injury not listed on the injury report Wednesday,
but did not participate on Thursday.
The reason I say it's interesting is because, well,
obviously a back injury is not something that you want to make light of
or anything.
But I'm curious only because I know he's not the starting right guard.
He obviously is not the starting center.
And we know that November 10th is the trade deadline.
We've been asked on this show before,
Is there anybody that you see the Raiders potentially trading?
Obviously, all minds go to Max Crosby, not happening.
But I've mentioned JPJ, and if a team needs a center
or an offensive lineman, dot, dot, dot.
That's what I'm really paying attention to.
Again, I'm not trying to say that he's going to get moved.
It's just interesting that there was nothing on Wednesday,
and then all of a sudden he had a back injury.
He was not out there at practice on Thursday.
Uh, second round pick of 2024,
a late three pick would presumably be the best case scenario
in terms of a trade for him.
I agree.
Aside from JPJ, Myers mentions Isaiah Polamau,
Max Crosby and Kirk Cousins.
If the Raiders lose to the Jets,
Crosby's name is going to pick up trade momentum in
a hurry.
Cousins is without question the trade possibility,
or yeah, and his departure would make the
decision to start from within make it a lot easier for Kubiak.
I mean, is there a world where he goes
to the Vikings for a second or a third?
That would seem a little crazy,
but he's leading the league in touchdowns in Minnesota.
You could win a Super Bowl, man.
I don't know.
Gun to my head, I would say JPJ's trade to Kirk Cousins is not.
That's how I feel, but only time will tell.
A long time, you know, there was once
a moment where we were trying to trade Derek Carr,
but he had a no trade clause.
Who gave him the no trade clause?
Well, it was Josh McDaniels.
And a little history lesson.
You guys know that Carr wasn't even allowed to play the last two games
because they were worried he was going to get injured or something
and his contract was going to get guaranteed.
But here's what Derek Carr said about that specific scenario.
I would have signed a waiver.
I would have done anything just to say, I don't care about any of that.
Just let me play these last two games.
I mean, we're two games away.
Let me play these last two.
If we want to part ways, that's fine.
But just let me finish.
All the work that I put in with my guys.
Right.
And when I sat down with them, you know,
I sat down with Josh and he was like, look, we just, we're out of it.
We have two games left.
We just want to see what we have in these other two.
And I was like, guys, I understand that.
I don't agree.
And I'm not down with that at all.
They put me out there.
I would have signed a waiver.
I would have done it.
He wanted to see what he had in Jared Stidham.
I mean, he's a liar.
Josh McDaniels is a full-blown liar,
because Derek Carr wasn't allowed back in the facility.
Even if Derek was like, okay, put him in, whatever,
I'll be on the sidelines and be a professional.
He wasn't even at the games.
When is the last time you've ever seen that?
Where the starter got benched, and he wasn't in the facility.
They didn't want to play Derek, because if he got hurt,
his full contract would be guaranteed.
Or something like that.
It's the same quarterback that they extended
and given no trade clause to.
And I know the whole thing with the Raiders and the Carr Wars
and what's Carr good, what's Carr bad.
Derek Carr didn't deserve that.
And every chance I get to talk about the mismanagement
of our franchise quarterback
by the most fraudulent head coach
in the history of the National League,
literally the worst head coach ever,
I will get a chance to do it and to back up my guy Derek Carr.
I do not give...
I was about to say a real bad word.
