James Kaufman, World News Report today.
Mr. Chairman, we've had
a very strong 6.9 magnitude earthquake in the Philippines,
11 kilometers east-southeast of Calapan, Philippines.
And it came in as a 9 on the DYFI, an 8 on the ShakeMap.
There was an associated tsunami warning.
There is a buoy in event mode that we will go after.
As we started to do this production,
we had an honorable mention come in just south of that here
in Indonesia, a 6.0.
There's a big difference between a 6.0
and this 6.9 here. So we're going
to talk about this 6.9 right now.
To me, it's amazing how all the large quakes pop off on the
Western
Part of the Ring of Fire, and nothing really ever happens
on the eastern part of the Ring of Fire.
I would expect more activity, or at least larger earthquakes,
up and down the North American West Coast.
It just hasn't happened in some time.
All right, so we have a 6.9 that rolled in.
This is going to be under several volcanoes that are...
erupting currently and we'll see exactly
which one it's under also on a plate tectonic boundary
with a lot of disconnections in this exact area
a very dangerous place to be on planet earth
currently all right as you can see we have several
volcanoes erupting it's going to tell us which one
that it's under here but this is the philippines
and i see two in major eruption two in minor
Minor eruption.
Some detailed information, main source USGS,
we're looking at a 6.9 and they're giving it
a default depth of 10 kilometers.
We see that Raspberry Shake is coming in only at a 6.7,
also a default depth of 10 kilometers,
and Germany's coming in at 6.8, but actually
giving it a depth of 15 kilometers.
We'll get some detailed information on this quick right now.
From VolcanoesandEarthquakes.com,
over to Volcano Discovery here, a very strong magnitude, 6.9.
That is correct. Today, September 30th, the last day of September.
Taking a look at some earthquake details.
This happened about three hours ago.
Our main source is the USGS, again, at 6.9.
We will compare this to other reporting agencies.
The closest volcano was Brilaran,
which is right there in the Philippines, and it is active currently.
And 21.1 atomic bombs worth of energy
were released from the 6.9 magnitude earthquake.
So there was no small event that saw magma moving under
those four active volcanoes.
Again, the Philippines is a very dangerous place to be right now.
Alright, taking a look at the shake map itself, well, we can see it's
a very populated area of the Philippines, and there were a lot
of reports that went down, especially near the epicenter of the 6.9.
10 kilometers is going to be the default depth here.
Let's continue.
Alright, comparing data for the same earthquake
from different reporting agencies, USGS 6.9.
Default depth, asterisks, a depth given as 10 kilometers,
often means that the depth of the quake cannot
be determined with sufficient accuracy.
We also have Raspberry Shake coming in at 6.7.
The Germans coming in at 6.8.
The Indonesians coming in at 6.9.
Now, the Germans have a depth of 15 kilometers.
The Indonesians have a depth of 24 kilometers.
The French came in at 6.44, default depth there.
The Australians at 6.8, 41 kilometers of depth.
All in all, this is a very shallow earthquake.
Next, we have the Incorporated Research Institute for Seismology
coming in at 6.9, default depth 10 kilometers.
After that, the Europeans coming in at 6.9, 15 kilometers.
After that, we have the Italians coming in at 6.7, 8.6 kilometers.
Then we have the Philippines finally coming in at 6.9,
5 kilometers of depth.
That magma is moving up
into those volcanic cones.
It's quite a situation to have on their hands over there currently.
This earthquake was the strongest
to hit the Philippines in 29 years.
29 years ago plus, we had a 7.1,
and 124 years ago, we had a 7.8.
So we're in a huge uptick, as I showed you all the other day.
We're heading for a once-in-a-lifetime event.
We can see since the year 2000,
earthquakes have been on the uptick big time here.
It's going to get really crazy out there.
i don't know if we're talking about over
the next year two years three years but very very soon
all right over to the national data buoy center yes we have
a buoy in event mode
Good.
Good.
right where that occurred buoy 5245
and it doesn't look like much of an event but we will
get some detailed information here all right taking
a look at the details of buoy station
And 5-2-4-5.
We're talking about a five centimeter situation or event.
So we're not talking about a real big tsunami, are we?
They always seem to be five centimeters or smaller.
In summary, we had a magnitude 6.9 earthquake,
released 21.1 atomic bombs worth of energy,
and associated five centimeter tsunami with it.
That's kind of a joke, right?
Came in very strong on the DYFI.
Lots of people in the area.
Shake map as an eight.
Honorable mention just occurred in the last few minutes
that 6.0 down in Indonesia,
also on active volcanoes.
This was under four active volcanoes
and also on a plate tectonic boundary.
God bless, folks.
