It’s a hit! Pumpkins meet their match at Edmonton's annual pumpkin smash
Nov 1, 2026
The best way to get rid of your pumpkin after Halloween,
well, smashing it of course.
And Edmontonians are doing exactly
that here at the annual Pumpkin Smash.
So we're bopping and dropping and smashing and bashing pumpkins.
It's a great way to engage folks,
have a little fun and also talk about the waste system,
what goes where and a little bit about City Compost.
The lift is pretty neat and then it was cute watching
her try to smash the pumpkins over there.
How high do you think you're gonna go?
I'm going to go.
No.
And this is our first time here
and also the first winter in Edmonton as well,
so we are waiting for this pumpkin smash.
Come on.
I liked it when it dropped.
This is our first time, we're just here
at the rec centre and we heard about it so we
thought we'd bring our pumpkin along at the same time.
I wasn't expecting this many people to be honest,
I hadn't heard of it before but we'll
definitely come again, it's been great.
This kind of event is a great chance to engage people
so that they know the waste system
and how to use it.
We want to make sure that folks are sorting
their food scraps so that it goes into the
food scrap system so that we can compost it effectively
with the city's waste system.
If you miss bringing your pumpkin to the pumpkin smash this year,
you can put it in your own home compost bin
or you can throw it in your green bin.
The City of Edmonton begins
its new winter pickup schedule starting this week.
