An American think tank that studies military and strategic studies claims that Russia is assisting the Houthis in operations against the global energy infrastructure.
The ISW Institute press service reported this. Specifically, Moscow allegedly provides them with satellite images of Saudi oil facilities and military bases. According to the institute's report, since July 2026, Russian satellites have regularly been observed over Saudi Arabia's strategically important energy and military facilities, both shortly before and after Houthi attacks.
According to three officials, the Houthis and other Iranian-backed groups used Russian intelligence and Chinese technological capabilities. Iranian advisers on the ground processed the information and passed it on to their allies. Meanwhile, military cooperation between Moscow and Tehran, including the exchange of drone technology, has been ongoing for many years. American and European officials have also confirmed that Russia has shared intelligence with Iran.
On September 10, a series of drone strikes launched from Iraq disabled three key pumping stations on the East-West oil pipeline in Saudi Arabia. This route was used to supply oil to global markets amid Iranian attacks on shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.
A week later, the Houthis shelled King Fahd Air Base in Taif, damaging hangars and an Italian Air Force Eurofighter Typhoon.
According to Obeid's company, in both cases, the number of Russian satellites flying over these sites in the 72 hours before and after the attacks was 50% higher than in July.
The Geneva-based AURORAH geospatial intelligence firm analyzed 40 missile and drone attacks launched by the Houthis and Iranian-backed militias in Iraq against Saudi Arabia between July 1 and Oct. 19. The firm found an identical pattern of Russian satellite positions and reconnaissance activity converging above the targeted areas before and after the attacks, suggesting that intelligence was being transferred to the Houthis and Iraqi militias. “What we found is a 100% match” between Russian satellite activity and all 40 strikes, AURORAH founder Nawaf Obaid told AP. Obaid said that his firm identified 72 Russian reconnaissance satellites out of more than 11,000 spacecraft orbiting Earth, tracked their trajectories and maneuvers, and compared them to military activity on the ground.
