Well, this morning we're learning more about
the brutal attack on a runner in Brooklyn
who was stabbed in the neck.
Police are looking for that attacker this morning.
Good morning, Meredith Gorman joins us with the latest
on this brutal attack, Meredith. Good morning.
Good morning. Well, a 28-year-old woman remains
on life support this morning after being stabbed
while out for a run in Brooklyn on Friday night.
Police have identified her as Katie Suarez and
they're still searching for the person behind
what they believe was a random attack.
The NYPD releasing this photo of Suarez in her running gear.
Investigators say she was running alone around
8 p.m. on Friday night along the Belt Parkway,
heading toward the Verrazzano Bridge.
She was attacked along the waterfront path
between Bay 8th and Bay 17th streets,
suffering stab wounds to both sides of her neck.
Suarez was taken to NYU Langone Health,
where she remains on life support.
The attack has left people in the neighborhood shaken,
with some now questioning just how safe
the popular waterfront path really is.
That's very shocking, makes me feel unsafe.
I was just planning to walk by near the ocean here,
and now since it's dark, it's kind of scary to walk around here,
especially by yourself at night, like as a woman.
I think they should put more lights here and more security,
like policemen, you know, walking.
We feel more safe then.
I have a daughter of 18 and she's,
when I speak, talk to her about, you know,
when you go around, go outside, you got to be vigilant.
She always put her, you know, the earmuff,
the earphone on and she like ignore me.
But yesterday I spoke to her the same way
and she started listening, you know.
You got to be vigilant.
One of the biggest concerns from people living nearby
is the lack of lighting along the
path.
Once you get closer to the water,
some stretches are so dark it's difficult to see more than
a few feet ahead.
State Senator Steve Chan is urging people to be extra cautious,
especially at night,
recommending they travel in groups
and avoid areas with tall grass or places where someone
could hide.
I can't tell you how heartbroken I
am and how angry I am that this happened here.
I'm living here 50 years and I've never seen anything like this.
I've biked this path myself for hundreds of days in the past
and we are going to bring this animal to justice.
Meanwhile, police are still looking for the attacker
and asking anyone with information to come forward.
A reward of up to $10,000 is now being offered
for information that could help lead to an arrest.
Meredith, thank you.
