Echoes of History

In 9 AD, three Roman legions marched into the rain-soaked forests of Germania. They never returned.
This documentary tells the story of the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest — the devastating ambush in which Arminius united Germanic warriors against Publius Quinctilius Varus and destroyed Legions XVII, XVIII, and XIX.
Follow the Roman column from its final departure to the chaos of the three-day battle, the collapse of Varus’s army, and the aftermath that shook Emperor Augustus and changed Rome’s ambitions beyond the Rhine. We also examine the later campaigns of Germanicus and the archaeological discoveries at Kalkriese that helped reveal where the disaster unfolded.
What made Rome’s disciplined army so vulnerable? How did Arminius turn Roman training against Rome itself? And why were the numbers XVII, XVIII, and XIX never used for Roman legions again?
