Alright, heavy rain all across the area as you just saw right here.
Some neighborhoods also underwater.
Joining us live on the phone right now is the Brevard Emergency
Management Communications Director there, Don Walker.
Don, good to see you man. What a day, huh?
I've never seen anything like this. What are your thoughts?
Well, we were certainly hoping that about this hour today,
all this rain would be tapering off.
But unfortunately, it seems like the storm systems decided
to park itself over Brevard County.
And I think if anybody's watching your live reports, I don't know
why you would want to take the risk of going out on the road today.
Thank you very much.
You know, to repeat something that you probably heard all morning.
If you can stay home, you need to stay home.
It's for your own safety.
Hey, Don, you know, we're seeing Marley where she
is right there on that main road through West Melbourne.
Have you gotten any indication of how widespread it
is or is that just one of this?
You always think it's just a low lying area.
It's all gathering there.
How far out does it go from there?
Yeah, no, I mean, this is the very definition of widespread.
I mean, it's just about any roadway
that you travel down in Brevard County today.
You know, areas that you're used to that might collect water
on the side of the road on a normal rainfall,
those areas now are going to be even more treacherous.
You know, what you're seeing there
in your live reports from West Melbourne,
unfortunately, we're expecting more rain
in that area just here within the next couple hours.
Palm Bay, West Melbourne, Melbourne.
They've been hit extremely hard.
You know, the real safe thing to do again today
is to stay indoors if you can.
You definitely don't want to drive in high water.
You don't want to walk in high water because
you don't know what's under the surface.
You know, you've got to use common sense
and just do what you can to protect yourself and your family.
Hey, Don, very quickly, I know a lot of people
are probably sitting at home because they can't get out.
I know crews, emergency crews,
first responders are just going to be so busy today.
What do homeowners need to do if they have a problem,
if something has happened because of what's going on here?
What's your advice to them right now?
Yeah, so I mean, well, obviously, I mean,
you stay in high, high on dry ground, right?
So if you've got water surrounding your home, stay indoors.
If the water is coming into your home, then obviously you're going
to be called, whether it's 911 or, or your local public works crew,
whether it's the city or the county, you know, but
You know, protect your home as best you can, protect your vehicles
as best you can, and protect your lives as best you can.
Don, I don't know if you can see that right now.
Guys, is that a live picture right now
of the bus going through right there?
No, that's from earlier.
So, man, you can just see how deep it is with that bus.
Right. And while schools are closed today,
government offices are still open.
We've encouraged a lot of our employees
that if you can stay home today, you should stay home today.
So we're working on a lighter crew today, but our bus routes
are continuing and, you know, business goes on where it has to.
So, you know, we do know people need to move around.
All right, Don.
Well, let us know if anything goes on we need to know about.
We appreciate you taking time.
I know you have a lot on your plate today.
Always good to see you. Appreciate it.
