This woman said, my dad walked into a diner,
looked at the waitress and thought, it's my wife,
in 1946. And I said, I'm sure that is a wonderful story.
However, you've got to set it up to put it
in the context. Take us into the scene.
In 1946, my dad walked into a diner.
Now, I don't know about you, but I know,
and you don't have to have been born in 1946
to know that's the end of World War II.
You've seen movies, you've heard stories
from your parents and grandparents, you've read history.
I think her dad was a soldier.
And because I think he's a soldier,
I attribute everything I know about
my Uncle Bill
He was in the RAF, got shot down
six weeks after World War II began
and spent the entire war in prisoner war camps.
So I know that her dad, who is a soldier,
will never talk to his future wife and children
about his experiences.
He will never talk to his parents
or his civilian friends about his experiences.
So in Hollywood,
This story is building in rooting principles.
We want this person, her dad,
the hero of our short story to get whatever he wants.
Now, I explained this concept of rooting for the Australian speakers
and found out it means something very different.
So I said, your story will be very
different if you begin in 1946.
Because you see, everything else is in our minds.
We are seeing the movie in our minds.
But you know, if it was 1946, it wouldn't look like that.
It would look like this.
So the formula is, when did this happen?
Where did it happen?
Who's in the story?
And sometimes the who and where
will be in a different order.
But that's getting us into the scene
because what happened is the story.
