A woman and her husband collaborate to repair the rotten roof of a pink shed on an allotment. Despite the narrator's severe arachnophobia, they structurally reinforce the roof with new battens and OSB boards before applying waterproof felt. The project successfully makes the shed watertight and inspires a broader plan for interior renovation and plot maintenance.
This one in particular was a...
Oh my god, that's awesome!
You were about to kill me there, but you remember the camera was there.
No!
Is this exposure therapy?
Because seriously, I don't think
it's going to cure me. I'm hyperventilating.
I've just put my foot through
the floor. Ah, dang!
Oh my god! Sorry, I just
screwed
you.
It's
like
torture!
Good morning guys. It is actually the next day.
We have now officially got all the supplies that
we need to fix up my shed roof at long last
so that's what we're heading to do now. It's a little
bit misty this morning which is quite pretty but the sun is coming out.
I can definitely feel the
sun is coming out so it should be a really nice day
to do some shed repairing. It's actually cost
me quite a lot of money all this material in the end.
I did buy a few new tools which I think were
I think we're really useful.
But yeah, it has actually cost me pretty much
what it would cost just to get a new shed.
Good morning.
Is this your new hangout?
Oh my gosh.
Okay.
We're really not friends.
We are really not friends.
That cat does not like me at all.
I don't know what I've done to annoy him.
What have I done?
He thinks I'm chasing him now, we're just walking the same way.
Anyway, I'm not too worried about the cost.
I really want to repair my shed and look after it.
So even though I have spent slightly more than I wanted
to on all the materials,
I'm really happy to be sort of repairing it
and keeping my lovely pink shed.
Look at that, look at the colours in that, that is absolutely gorgeous.
This little birdie is literally sitting here waiting for me.
Okay, all right, okay, I'm coming.
Because I looked it up online, it was like £14 for a bit of wood.
Oh my gosh, he's right there.
No, but you're staying here now, baby.
You've got to get the right stuff done.
I know, I know.
There you are! There you are!
Yeah.
Were you waiting for us? You were!
He's really waiting for me today. He doesn't normally wait like that.
You don't normally wait like that, do you?
Funny birdie.
You're extra hungry.
Yeah.
Maybe another project would be getting
this guttering fixed as well.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
As you can see we've got husband here today helping just so I don't
kill myself with this project
which may be a little bit beyond my DIY skills but we will see.
So this is my beautiful shed let's see the state of the roof
so if we look in here
You can see that it's become completely rotten
and it is basically caving in and that is because
the felt came off in the top
and I replaced it with a ground sheet and over the years the
ground sheet has disintegrated and so all the water's come through
and with all the storms and everything
I mean just kind of like waiting to happen really isn't it so
today the job will be to take the roof off put
a new roof on fix it on that's the plan okay
Whether or not this happens, we don't know. We never know.
We've got some battens here because actually we thought,
seeing as we're having to replace the roof,
we might as well make the roof better and stronger.
So at the moment...
The way the roof is fixed, it's got these OSB sort of boards
and it's just got one batten which runs
across the middle of the shed. That's how the shed came.
So let me show you again. It just has this
one batten sort of going across the whole length of the shed.
So what we're going to do is put them
this way and I'm going to put about four or five and then put these OSB
wood boards on the top of it
so that it actually strengthens the shed roof.
So hopefully it will stay up as long as I sort of waterproof the top.
So yeah the plan will be to replace the shed roof
but also to make the shed roof
better and stronger.
So let's get started, let's start pulling off that felt.
Oh my gosh the spiders, oh
my god, oh my god the spiders.
Have you got the hammer still in?
Yeah I'll get the hammer.
Under here.
Oh my goodness me. I don't think I can help.
This one in particular was, uh, oh, it's huge.
Oh, I hate them so much.
I'm sorry for the screaming.
I know. I know. Oh my gosh. I hate
them so much. No, there's a spider. Yeah.
I can't do this. I'm so glad that you came with me. Cause
Because that would have been the end of it for me.
How are you so brave with it?
I guess not everyone has a spider fear, do they?
Oh my goodness me.
This is why I've not gone into the shed.
I'm so sorry for the screaming.
I'm so sorry.
Look, I can't help it that I've got
a really bad phobia of spiders.
I push through and I keep coming down here
and I just hope that that means something
and that you guys can find it in your heart
to forgive me when I scream,
but I don't let it stop me because I'm still here
and I'm still gonna do the shed.
I just hate them. I'm just so so scared of them
and it's it's easy just to write a comment and say
oh for god's sakes it's just a spider
but to me it's an evil demon come to hurt me and I just
hate them. I just can't. I just can't.
This just looks so terrible doesn't it? Why is there still
a tomato on my shed roof? That's so weird.
Yeah it doesn't surprise me there's a bit of wood that did
Because it did nothing.
Yeah.
Maybe it's just keeping their...
I am absolutely no help whatsoever right now.
Absolutely no help.
I'm completely...
There's no way I can go near it because of the amount of spiders.
Oh my god.
How weird does this look with no roof on?
Oh my goodness.
I still don't want to go in it.
I'm still scared.
Taking
off the
shed
roof.
I feel like that window because I put
that netting over there because this
panel had sort of has gone through a little bit
and that happened in the vandalism ages ago
and but I feel like without it there's
a lot more light going into my shed which might help
with the spider situation.
So it's just about I mean if I could put a skylight in.
Shall I ask my husband if we can put skylight in?
I don't think I'm going to ask him,
not right now, but yeah that would be really
great just to have like a skylight.
So if anyone knows how to fit skylight,
Velux would be ideal. Right, I might start clearing the shed just
while we don't have a roof on because it feels so bright and airy.
There
is another
problem.
I don't want
to tell
my husband
right now
because he's
just done all that work. Oh my god there's so many spiders.
I've just put my foot through the floor. There's no floor in here.
I think I just need a new shed. I think I just need a new shed.
Okay.
Maybe there's a way of putting some pallets down
for flooring or something.
I have to just sort of assess it.
The sides of the shed look fine.
That's the thing, and the door is okay.
So I just feel like there might
be a way to save it.
Hope so.
My heart is like
pounding when
I'm doing this.
My heart is just like going at a thousand miles an hour,
but I'm still doing it.
Look at me still doing it.
See, I just want you
to know I'm still getting involved.
That might be useful.
I'm gonna keep that.
I'm still getting involved and I'm still doing it even
though I'm absolutely terrified.
I'm still doing it.
I don't feel good pushing through.
I just don't think it builds character.
My character doesn't need building anymore.
I've got enough character but I'm still doing it.
God there's a spider in there and it looks so-
This here is an issue
because it's absolutely
covered in cobwebs
and then like all around the top,
all around the top I'm just like surrounded by them.
This is why I did not want to come in.
Oh my god!
Over here!
Over here!
There is the tarantula sitting in the corner.
I don't even know if you can see him.
Good god. Good god. Oh my god.
Being in here makes me feel like I'm going to die.
I need to put that in the bin and I don't think I can do it.
I don't think I can do any more. I'm literally shaking.
Look at my hand. This is like hell
on earth for me. I can't even breathe.
I think I'm hyperventilating. I've just seen another one.
Oh my God, is this exposure therapy?
Is this exposure therapy?
Because seriously, I don't think it's going to cure me.
I'm hyperventilating.
I've got to get out.
I just want to put the new roof on and go home.
Right, these are the battens that are going
to go across the top of the roof to make it more
sort of secure and structurally sound. So just cutting them to size.
And then, are these ones over there? Are these ones spare?
Spare, yeah.
Oh, excellent. So I've got spare wood here, which is always fun.
See what we can come up with with that.
Yeah, it just wasn't enough support before.
This is looking pretty good already.
In fact, next time you ever build a shed, I would do this.
Yeah, same. I would as well. I don't think
what they give you is strong enough.
I'd buy some bands and just do.
Add extra stuff to it, yeah.
They're alright, I don't know, it's not too bad.
That looks good already, doesn't it?
Yeah, I think it's looking good.
Right, shall we go home?
Will it survive the storms like this?
So this is the idea of the shed, the battens across, and then the boards
will go across this and it will just create a stronger structure.
I know it's not perfectly cut and everything, but I think
if we just make it watertight with the felt, I think it'll be okay.
I've just stood up here and look what I see.
Literally, literally a spider just like millimetres from me.
I don't know how I'm ever going to get in the shed again.
That's the concern that I'm having right now.
I don't know how I'm ever going to be in there.
I just feel like the shed needs to be obliterated.
If I do the bottom ones, I think we can still twist them around
at the top if we need to manoeuvre stuff.
But what are we going to do about the spiders?
So this is the amount of rubbish
that I've managed to pull out of my shed.
One, two, three, four, five, six, seven bags full of rubbish.
I think a few of them were already bagged up in there
and ready to take to the dump.
So this is all going to go to the dump.
The shed roof is going to go to the dump, the old one.
The shed is looking a little bit clearer in there.
It's just a spider situation.
I just cannot figure out what to do about all these spiders in here.
And...
I think the entire thing just needs clearing, like the entire
shed needs clearing out completely so that it's an empty shell.
That's what I need to do.
I think when it's an empty shell in here
and there's literally nothing in here,
I can literally fumigate the whole thing.
I'm starting to speak now.
Literally fumigate the whole thing.
That's amazing.
And then hopefully just sort out the flooring and then make it...
The only bit of the flooring that's gone
is this bit where I first walk in.
It's literally just here where there's a pool of water.
That literally feels like it's going to go any second.
Everything else feels fine.
So maybe I just need to secure this part here somehow.
There's some wood in here
as well, wow. Oh my goodness.
Yeah, they have them.
Yeah, yeah, yeah,
they do. That one next to us is Dave, that next to us is.
Yeah, yeah, we'll have them hanging over,
it's fine. It won't be too much. Back at the front though.
Keep going, keep going, keep going,
keep going, keep going.
Over one more. It's there, isn't it?
A little bit more. Screw.
Why is it doing that?
Right, it's looking good.
We're gonna go grab one more board for the roof
and we're gonna take a break for lunch
and come back and finish it.
But it is looking like a roof,
which is what we want right now.
And it's looking pretty good.
So I'm very happy with it.
I actually prefer it
to the other roof.
We are back.
We have gone and got some lunch.
We've eaten our lunch.
We're feeling a little bit more refreshed now.
It's actually not as bad a job as we thought,
other than the spider situation,
which is definitely bad.
The actual fixing of the roof is actually going quite swimmingly,
which is unusual for me to say.
I've kind of come up with this plan and then we just sort
of bought the stuff and we're just giving it a go.
I don't think it's rocket science
and actually it's just working and I'm so thrilled with it.
So we are now on to the very front bit of the roof,
then we're going to do the felt and then it's finishing touches.
So we're almost there.
We've also got the circular saw with us now
so that Dave can cut the things a little bit easier,
and the hand saw was ridiculous.
But yeah, I'm so thrilled with it. I'm so excited to sort out
the shed completely now. I want to repaint it
and I want to redo it all inside. I want new flooring
down. Yeah, it's given me a new lease of life, let alone the shed.
So we're on the last stretch.
Let's go see if I can stand around or help out.
Who knows? Here we go. We've got the big guns now.
The big guns, I'm really scared of this thing.
This is the felt that I
picked up, green shed felt.
So this is what's going to cover the entire structure
and hopefully make it waterproof.
So I think I'll roll it out along
the length of the shed, yeah?
What's the bit that goes outside? Do you know which one's the...
Is the stripes facing...?
This way is up.
Okay.
Let's get two chairs and put them on the back.
Because you need to put the bottom layer first.
Oh yeah, cut a little bit, I know what you're saying, yeah.
Do you want the thingy?
Yeah.
Just cut a little bit off.
You've got, how many meters?
You've got ten meters?
You've got loads.
You've got loads.
Just do it over the top.
Is that an OTT amount of cut, yeah?
Should we put it back a little bit?
Put it back a little bit more, but not too much.
Don't want to...
Yeah, okay.
So I'll cut it there, yeah?
Yeah, I think that's more.
Just go to the edge of the roll,
where you're at the edge of the roll, just do that.
Yeah.
Just a rough cut at the end.
Yeah, you should be able to drag it.
Brand new blade.
Now it can
be helpful.
To me, to you.
Very to me, to you.
To me, to you.
Let's get all the money for the book.
How far
do you
want?
Let's get all the money for the book.
No, no, no, do this one first and tuck it.
I think so. Do you get the tacks on the side bits
or are they getting on the top, aren't they?
Do you just go straight in with the tacks?
Okay cool, whatever, whatever. I'm not sure whether you,
does your one look like it had on the side, does it go?
I know, what you do is you tack it and then you get a piece of wood.
I know that, yeah, yeah, I know, yeah, yeah.
I know, I thought we just used the new blade.
No, no, no, no, no, no. These are old. No, these are fine.
What are we going to use these for then?
What are the other important projects
that are around my allotment plot?
You're about to kill me then but you remember the camera was there.
Not for you to know, not for you to think about.
Oh, erm, it's
all free
treatings.
I'll put mine in the middle.
Why shall
I leave it
at this?
Two seconds.
Nah, the other ones were probably good.
Ah!
Don't!
Oh my god.
Sorry.
It's like
torture.
I feel like we've done a really good job with this shed.
So we've just put on the felt,
we've battened it all around so that the felt's not going to fly away.
It's not the neatest thing that we've ever created,
I mean what is neat that I've ever created,
but it works and it's going to keep all the water out of the shed
so I'm just thrilled with it.
Are you ready to see the final shed?
Ta-da! I mean, it's not the final, final shed
because I am going to redo pretty much the entire thing, I think.
And the front needs neatening up.
It's definitely a little bit rough around
the edges, so please don't judge me.
Yeah, absolutely.
But you can see that I've sort
of used battens to keep the felt in place.
Nice.
It's got a whole new roof. It's got no gaps for water can get in.
It's just got felt the whole way around it,
all on the top. And also on the top,
that felt is overlapped like crazy.
So it's basically a double layer of felt.
And then we've got all the batons holding it down.
I just think it looks great.
I'm so pleased with it.
Number one goal is to walk through a shed, right?
Oh, thank you for helping me.
You're welcome.
I'm so, thanks for all your work today.
He ain't done nothing. Actually, I've not done nothing.
It was mainly my husband. But you know what?
What a great job. Well done. I'm so pleased with it.
Let me know what you think of my shed.
Or let me show you the inside quickly.
So the question really is, what do we do?
What do we do with the spider situation?
I mean, look, the roof looks fantastical now.
I'm absolutely over the moon with it.
The spiders are a serious issue in here.
Yeah.
So I really just don't know what I'm going to do with it.
But what I am going to do is reclaim it at some point
and make sure that I can get back into the shed
because it's such a great space in here.
Oh, look who's turned up.
Look who's turned up.
What are you looking for, the birds?
Can you hear something in there?
Is it a mouse?
Is it a mouse?
Is there a mousey in there, Mavis?
Right, thank you for tuning in today to see
my little shed roof fix. I'll be back again
on Wednesday with an allotment vlog.
Hopefully the weather stays nice. We are due a little bit
of sunshine and that would be great.
We're going to fill up some new raised beds, sort out a few
more things on the plot, so join me Wednesday.
I'll see you then. Thank you so much for watching. Bye!
